What to Know Before You Arrive
Fargo is North Dakota's most populous city, sitting on the western bank of the Red River of the North — a river that runs backwards to your instincts, flowing north into Canada, which means melting snow and river ice can push the river over its banks across the flat Red River Valley, and the city is vulnerable to flooding in seasons with above-average precipitation. The town started in 1871 as a Northern Pacific crossing called Centralia and was renamed for William Fargo, a Northern Pacific director and one of the two Wells Fargo Express Company founders. For a city its size, the founding note is unusually direct: the railway named the town after a man they knew, whose company also happens to be on half the ATMs in America.
The film everyone associates with Fargo mostly is not set here. Yes, the 1996 movie Fargo exists; the city appears only in the opening scene, and none of the movie was shot in or near town. Locals will mention it politely, sell you a t-shirt, and then talk about the Theatre or the Bison instead. Do the same. What lands here is the working history — a downtown Art Deco cinema still open every night, a big-time college football program on the west side of town, and a Viking ship museum literally across the river.
The other thing to know before arriving: North Dakota State's football program plays FCS football, and it plays it well. NDSU has been dominant at the FCS level, and a home game at the Fargodome on a fall Saturday is the kind of local event a visitor is welcome to just show up for. The campus itself is on the northern edge of town, an easy 10-minute drive from downtown, and the university is a genuine economic anchor with over 14,500 students.
The Road Trip Stop
The Fargo Theatre is the anchor and the reason to be downtown at night. Construction began in the fall of 1925 and it opened on March 15, 1926 as an Art Deco movie palace; a 1999 restoration returned the room to its 1926 look, and it has been running first-run films, independents and festival programming ever since. The room's centerpiece is a four-manual, 27-rank Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ — the Mighty Wurlitzer — maintained by the Red River Theatre Organ Society, and it is played live before some screenings. Since 2001 the Theatre has been the main venue for the Fargo Film Festival.
Budget the time
- Check the calendar first. A regular movie at the Theatre is the easy pitch. A screening with the Wurlitzer or a festival night is the reason to plan ahead.
- Combine with a Broadway walk. Downtown Fargo runs on Broadway; the Theatre is on it, and dinner is either side.
- Two hours covers a movie plus dinner; a festival evening is a full night.
- The Theatre is listed on the National Register. The marquee is visible from the sidewalk without a ticket.
Neighborhoods
Downtown & Broadway
Restored railroad-era brick storefronts running along Broadway, anchored by the Theatre and a walkable stretch of restaurants and bars. Compact and easy to circle on foot.
NDSU / North of downtown
The university's north Fargo campus and the residential streets around it, including the Fargodome. Real estate for the football-Saturday crowd.
West Fargo
Its own incorporated city west of the interstate, home to Bonanzaville and much of the region's newer growth.
Moorhead across the river
Technically Minnesota, technically its own city, but a five-minute bridge crossing from downtown Fargo and where the Hjemkomst Center sits.
The Food Stop
Downtown Broadway is where the food scene lives — a compact strip of restaurants, breweries and cafes in the restored brick district around the Theatre.
For a specifically Fargo thing to eat, look for hot dish (the Upper Midwest casserole) or a lefse plate somewhere in the Scandinavian rotation.

Practical Road Trip Info
One full day covers downtown and Bonanzaville comfortably; add half a day for Hjemkomst across the river and an evening at the Theatre.
Best season is late May through September. Climate normals put Fargo's January mean temperature at 9.2°F, and the city averages 43 days a year with a low of 0°F or colder.
The Red River of the North is prone to seasonal flooding at Fargo. Snowmelt, river ice and runoff from tributaries can push the river over its banks, and the city lists permanent levees, floodwalls and added pumping capacity among its flood-control work. If you are traveling in spring, check current road conditions before you go: the North Dakota Department of Transportation offers an ND Roads travel map online and a 511 phone line for real-time updates.
Downtown on-street parking is time-limited. The City of Fargo's 2025 downtown parking study says state law limits charging for parking on the street through meters or fees, so time limits are used to turn spaces over; it also describes limited free parking in many city lots and ramps, plus free evening and weekend parking. Rules can change, so check the City of Fargo's parking page before leaving a car downtown.
The Local Debate
Family-Friendly
Fargo Theatre matinee
A matinee at the restored 1926 Art Deco room is the easiest indoor afternoon in the city, and every so often the Wurlitzer is played live. Older kids only for the organ shows.
Bonanzaville, USA
Forty historic buildings kids can walk in and out of, plus horse-drawn vehicles and firefighting rigs. Open May through September; Pioneer Days weekend in mid-August is the biggest one.
Hjemkomst Center (Moorhead)
A real Viking ship replica hanging in a museum next to a full-scale stave church. The ship is the part most younger kids remember.
Red River Zoo
A smaller regional zoo in south Fargo that specializes in cold-climate species. The zoo's admission page lists its fall 2026 hours as open daily, 10am–5pm; check the page for current hours before you go.
