What to Know Before You Arrive
Honolulu is on the island of Oʻahu, where the state's Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) is located, so the road travel in this entry starts after a flight. The distances involved are not a figure of speech — this is the most remote major city in the United States, and the closest major city to it is San Francisco, more than two thousand nautical miles away.
The city has a royal history that is not decorative. ʻIolani Palace in the Capitol District was built under the Hawaiian kings after 1845, and its own custodians describe it as “a living restoration of a proud Hawaiian national identity and a registered National Historic Landmark.” It is run as part of the State of Hawaiʻi Museum of Monarchy History. This is a sovereign nation's seat of government, preserved in the middle of an American city.
Waikiki is a district, not the city. It lies “between the Ala Wai Canal and the Pacific Ocean next to Diamond Head” and is “the center of the tourism industry in Hawaii, with thousands of hotel rooms.” Downtown, the Capitol District and the palace are a separate place a few miles west, and a visit that never leaves Waikiki has not really seen Honolulu.
The Road Trip Stop
ʻIolani Palace at 364 South King Street, on the corner of King and Richards, is the anchor. “Various tours are currently offered Tuesday through Saturday,” in several formats — docent-led, self-led audio, and specialist tours including the Kalākaua Legacy Tour, a White Glove Tour and a Japanese-language tour.
Tuesday to Saturday, and mind the dress code
- It is closed Sunday and Monday for general visiting. The ticket office runs Tuesday to Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and the shop to 4:30 p.m. Once a month there are Kamaāina Sundays with complimentary self-led audio tour tickets for Hawaiʻi residents.
- There is a dress code, and it rules out beach clothes. “Shirts and footwear are required”, bathing suits and beachwear are not permitted, “and you will also be asked to wear shoe coverings provided by the Palace.” Arriving from Waikiki in swimwear means not getting in.
- Pick the tour format before you arrive. Docent-led and self-led audio tours both cover the first and second floors; the specialist tours are separate offerings.
- Admission is priced by tour format. General admission to the self-led audio tour is $28* for adults (18+), $23* for ages 13–17 and $13* for ages 5–12; the docent-led tour is $34*, $31* and $16* for the same groups, and ages 0–4 are free on both. The palace also lists kamaʻāina and military rates, and its tour pages say tickets are sold online, with no walk-ups or same-day reservations.

Neighborhoods
The Capitol District
Downtown, holding ʻIolani Palace, Aliʻiōlani Hale and St. Andrew's Cathedral. The civic and royal heart of the city, and quite separate from the resort strip.
Waikiki
Between the Ala Wai Canal and the ocean next to Diamond Head, carrying thousands of hotel rooms and most of the state's tourism.
Chinatown
In the heart of downtown Honolulu: the Chinatown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The National Park Service describes today's Chinatown as a commercial district where smaller traditional businesses such as restaurants, shops and bars sit alongside art galleries and artists' studios.
Mānoa
Mānoa Valley lies just outside downtown Honolulu, according to the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, whose campus is there. The state's Department of Land and Natural Resources describes the Mānoa Falls Trail as located at the back of the valley.
The Food Stop
We were unable to confirm a specific Honolulu restaurant for this guide, and this guide does not name a business without checking that business's own site. One practical note: the palace's ticket office closes at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday, so it pairs with lunch rather than dinner.

The Home Teams
Hawaii Rainbow Warriors
NCAA Division IThe athletics site of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa lists tickets for football, women's and men's volleyball, men's and women's basketball and baseball. The 2026 football schedule lists home games at the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex in Honolulu, and UH Athletics says the new Aloha Stadium is scheduled to be completed in 2029 and will once again be the home of Hawaiʻi football. Confirm the venue for the game you plan to attend.
No MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL or MLS team plays in Honolulu, which is unsurprising for the most remote major city in the country — every away fixture would be a five-hour flight. The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa's athletics program (see the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors entry) lists tickets for football, volleyball, basketball and baseball.
Day Trips
| Destination | Time | Distance | How we got it |
|---|---|---|---|
| The North Shore | 11 min | 5 mi | routed |
| Oʻahu's north coast around Haleʻiwa, about 26 miles north-west of the palace in a straight line. Hawaii Ocean Safety lists November through April as the winter season, when it says to expect extremely high surf at many north and west shore beaches, and it advises inexperienced and novice surfers and swimmers to avoid entering the water at North Shore beaches during high-surf conditions. | |||
| Hanauma Bay | 29 min | 13 mi | routed |
| East along the coast to a snorkelling bay in a volcanic crater. The City says the preserve is regularly closed to the public on Mondays and Tuesdays. The state’s Division of Aquatic Resources lists entry from 6:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays through Sundays, with visitors leaving by 4 p.m., and says changes are possible at any time. The City runs online ticketing, and Hawaiʻi residents need no reservation. The City has also said a further temporary closure is anticipated at the beginning of 2027, dates not yet set; check the City’s Hanauma Bay page before going. | |||
| The windward coast | 35 min | 15 mi | estimated |
| Kailua, about 10 miles north-east of the palace in a straight line, and Kāneʻohe, about 8 miles north-east, lie on Oʻahu's windward side, beyond the Koʻolau Range that rises behind Honolulu. | |||
| Pearl Harbor | 42 min | 22 mi | routed |
| About 7 miles north-west of the palace in a straight line. The National Park Service says the USS Arizona Memorial program runs on timed departures, with free reservations made online through Recreation.gov, which charges a $1* non-refundable fee per ticket. Reservations are released daily at 3 pm HST in two windows: 24 hours and 8 weeks in advance. Visitors without a reservation can sign up for a standby callback system, and the visitor center and museums can be visited without a ticket. Parking is $7* per day. | |||
| Diamond Head | 15 min | 6 mi | routed |
| About 5 miles south-east of the palace in a straight line, at the eastern edge of Waikiki's coastline. The state's summit trail runs 0.8 mile from the trailhead, gaining 560 feet from the crater floor, and is not ADA accessible; Hawaii State Parks requires entry and parking reservations for non-residents. | |||

Practical Road Trip Info
Fly in, then drive. Oahu has a full road system and a car is how you see it; the flight is the part that needs planning.
Weekday peak periods are the pressure point on the highways. The Oahu Metropolitan Planning Organization's Congestion Management Process reports that travel-time unreliability is concentrated in the weekday AM and PM peak periods, especially in the urban core and along the H-1 and H-201 corridors.
Several sites run reservations. Hawaii State Parks requires entry and parking reservations for non-residents at Diamond Head; the National Park Service takes free USS Arizona Memorial reservations through Recreation.gov; and the City and County of Honolulu runs online ticketing for Hanauma Bay, where Hawaiʻi residents need no reservation. Check each one before building a day around it.
Leave Waikiki at least once. The Capitol District, Chinatown and the windward coast are all short drives and none of them resembles the resort strip.
The Local Debate
Family-Friendly
The shoe coverings at the palace
Being handed protective covers to walk on a king's floors makes the building feel like something to look after, which lands with children.
Hanauma Bay
Snorkelling in a sheltered crater bay, with an orientation film before entry. It is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, and the City says Hawaiʻi residents need no reservation.
Mānoa Falls
The Mānoa Falls Trail is managed through the state's Nā Ala Hele program. In March 2026 the Department of Land and Natural Resources cited the valley's consistently wet climate and recent storm damage as contributing to slippery conditions, and announced temporary weekday access limits for trail maintenance. Check the Nā Ala Hele Oʻahu trails page for the trail's current status before going.
The North Shore shrimp trucks
We were unable to confirm which North Shore shrimp trucks are operating, or when they open, from an operator page; check a truck's own site before planning a stop.
