What to Know Before You Arrive
Orlando was originally settled by Aaron Jernigan in 1843 and initially called Jernigan; it incorporated as a town in 1875 with just 85 residents and became a city in 1885. The origin of its current name is debated, though the most accepted theory ties it to a Shakespearean character rather than a historical soldier. The city has a humid subtropical climate, with a hot, rainy season from May through late October and a milder, drier season from November through April, when days stay warm and nights turn cool.
Everything changed on October 1, 1971, when Walt Disney World opened roughly 20 miles southwest of downtown Orlando, spanning what grew to approximately 25,000 acres — larger than Manhattan — across Orange and Osceola counties. Walt Disney died in 1966 before construction began; his brother Roy oversaw the project to completion and renamed it Walt Disney World as a memorial. In 2024 the resort drew more than 49 million annual visitors, making it, per Wikipedia's account, the world's most visited vacation resort.
Universal Orlando Resort opened June 7, 1990, and now operates three theme parks, a water park and eleven resort hotels. Its newest park, Universal Epic Universe, opened May 22, 2025. SeaWorld Orlando opened in 1973 as the chain's third park and today combines marine-life exhibits and conservation programming with thrill rides across 200 acres. None of the three resorts is described here as better than another — each offers a different kind of park, and which one anchors a trip depends on what a family is looking for.
The Road Trip Stop
Orlando's three major theme-park resorts each offer a different experience. Walt Disney World spans four parks — Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disney's Animal Kingdom — themed respectively around classic Disney storytelling, human achievement and world culture, show business, and wildlife and nature. Universal Orlando spans three parks — Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, and the new Epic Universe — built around movie and literary properties, including The Wizarding World of Harry Potter split across the two original parks. SeaWorld Orlando centers on marine life and conservation, combined with roller coasters including a 2024 family coaster and a 2025 flying-theater attraction.
What planning a park visit involves
- Walt Disney World's four parks each have a distinct theme, so a multi-day visit typically spreads across more than one.
- Universal's newest park, Epic Universe, opened May 22, 2025, adding a fourth major gate to the Universal Orlando complex alongside its existing two parks and water park.
- SeaWorld Orlando markets itself as the ‘Coaster capital of Orlando,’ with 8 roller coasters among its 18 rides, alongside its marine exhibits and shows.
- Ticket prices can change; SeaWorld Orlando's ticket page sells single-day tickets for a selected visit date and states that price and offer are subject to change without notice. We were unable to confirm the ticket pricing terms for Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando, so current pricing should be checked on each resort's own site before planning a visit.

Fees, seasons, water levels, algal advisories and ramp closures change without notice and belong to the agency that runs the water. A blank is something we did not confirm, not something the lake lacks. Never assume a lifeguard. Whether a beach is staffed turns on the season, the day, and which agency runs that particular beach — two beaches on one lake can differ. If that matters to your family, confirm it with the agency before you set out.

Practical Road Trip Info
SeaWorld Orlando's ticket page sells single-day tickets for a selected visit date and states that price and offer are subject to change without notice. We were unable to confirm the ticket pricing terms for Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando; current pricing at all three resorts should be checked on each resort's own official site before planning a visit.
Orlando's dry season runs November through April, with warm days and cool nights, while the wet season runs May through late October with frequent afternoon rain.
Walt Disney World's four parks, Universal Orlando's three parks, and SeaWorld Orlando are separate resorts with separate tickets; a multi-park visit requires planning which gates to prioritize.
International Drive serves as the main hotel and dining corridor connecting the theme-park resorts, separate from downtown Orlando.
