Roswell

The thing Roswell is famous for is placed about seventy miles away. The thing that actually happened in Roswell was Robert Goddard building liquid-fuel rockets here in the 1930s.

What to Know Before You Arrive

In June or July 1947 something came down in the general vicinity, and the recovery was handled by the local Roswell Army Air Field. The City of Roswell places the alleged crash near Corona, about seventy miles northwest of the city. For three decades it was a minor local story. Since the late 1970s it has been the subject of intense controversy, with explanations ranging from a classified programme called Project Mogul to the claim that a craft and its occupants were recovered. A traveller should know going in that the town sells the mystery rather than a conclusion, and that it is upfront about doing so.

The real aerospace story is older and better documented. Robert H. Goddard, the American pioneer of liquid-fuel rocketry, carried out much of his early work here in the 1930s. The Roswell Museum houses an exhibit recreating the workshop where he developed his rocket engines, and the local high school carries his name. Roswell was a rocket town before it was a flying-saucer town, and the two sit a few blocks apart.

The city has had to remake itself more than once. It was militarily important from 1941 until Walker Air Force Base was decommissioned in 1967, after which it reinvented itself as a retirement community. It is also a centre for irrigated farming, dairying and ranching, and Leprino Foods operates one of the world's largest mozzarella factories here. The economy under the souvenir shops is cattle, milk and water rights.

The Road Trip Stop

The International UFO Museum & Research Center at 114 N Main Street is the anchor, and it is the reason most people turn off the highway. It was founded by Walter Haut, Glenn Dennis and Max Littell, and its own invitation is to “step into the fascinating world of ufos and learn about the 1947 Roswell Incident.” It presents the accounts and the arguments rather than a verdict.

Budget the time, and pair it

  • It sits on Main Street in the middle of town, at 114 N Main Street, so it is a park-once stop rather than a drive-out.
  • The museum's own site lists it open daily, 9AM – 5PM, closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, with early closures at 2 pm the day before each of those holidays. Its admissions page lists $7.00* for adults, $4.00* for ages 5–15, $5.00* for seniors and military, and free entry for ages 4 and under. The museum's pages do not say when they were last updated, so check them before planning around the figures.
  • The Roswell Museum's Goddard workshop is not open to visitors at present. The museum is temporarily closed for an extended period after the October 2024 flood, and the city says the Goddard collection will need more than two years of conservation before it returns to the museum. The city publishes a virtual tour of the workshop. The museum's exhibitions page also lists a long-term Goddard display at the Roswell Air Center; we were unable to confirm where in the air center it sits or when it can be seen. One town, two very different claims on the sky.
  • The 1947 site itself is not a visitor attraction. The City of Roswell places it near Corona, about seventy miles northwest of the city. The reported location is on private ranch land. Do not plan a drive out to it; there is nothing arranged for visitors there.

Neighborhoods

North Main Street
The downtown spine and where the UFO museum, the souvenir shops and most of the themed storefronts are concentrated. New Mexico Magazine describes Main Street as leaning into the UFO aesthetic, with streetlamps shaped like alien heads.

The museum district
The Roswell Museum, at 1011 N. Richardson Ave., is the institution behind the Goddard galleries and workshop recreation and a permanent collection of over 11,000 works of art and historical materials. It is temporarily closed for an extended period after the October 2024 flood, and the city's recovery page estimates the museum's recovery at 5 years.

The old base land
South of the city, the former Walker Air Force Base is now the Roswell Air Center, which the city describes as the core of southeastern New Mexico’s industrial activity and as a storage facility for a number of retired Airbus A300-600R wide body jetliners. The city’s Roswell Air Center page places the Air Center five miles south of the central business district. We were unable to confirm whether the parked aircraft can be seen from public roads; the same city page lists a contact number for enquiries.

The irrigated valley
The farming country around the city, watered by the Pecos and the aquifer beneath it, which is what the town actually runs on.

Hidden Gems

▣

The Goddard workshop recreation

At the Roswell Museum: a reconstruction of the workshop where Robert Goddard developed his rocket engines in the 1930s. It is the single most historically significant thing in the city and it is not what the signage out of town advertises.

▣

Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Wetlands 7 miles north-east of the city on the Pecos River. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service says fall migration attracts more than 26,000 lesser sandhill cranes, and that the refuge is home to what is considered one of the most diverse populations of dragonflies and damselflies in North America, with more than 100 species documented. There is no charge to visit.

▣

The aircraft storage at the old base

Retired airliners stored at the Roswell Air Center, the former Walker Air Force Base, which the city describes as a storage facility for a number of retired Airbus A300-600R wide body jetliners formerly operated by American Airlines. We were unable to confirm whether the aircraft can be seen from public roads or what access the Air Center allows; the city’s Roswell Air Center page lists a contact number for enquiries.

▣

Bottomless Lakes State Park

A chain of sinkhole lakes ranging from 17 to 90 feet deep, 15 miles south-east of the city, in a park that Recreation.gov says was established in 1933 as the first state park in New Mexico.

07

The Food Stop

Pecos Flavors Winery & Bistro, at 412 West 2nd Street, says on its own site that it was founded in 2004 and now operates a full restaurant and bar. The same site lists Tuesday to Saturday, 11:00 AM – 9:00 PM, closed Sunday and Monday. We were unable to confirm which other Roswell restaurants are long established. This guide names a business only after checking it on that business's own site; check current hours directly before building an evening around any single place.

08

The Home Teams

No MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL or MLS team plays anywhere near Roswell, and at 48,000 people the city has no professional side of its own. Goddard High School, named for the rocketry pioneer, is the town's sporting institution.

Day Trips

DestinationTimeDistanceHow we got it
Carlsbad Caverns2 hr 10 min103 mirouted
South on US 285 to Carlsbad Caverns National Park, in the Guadalupe Mountains, where the National Park Service says more than 119 caves lie beneath the Chihuahuan Desert. It needs most of a day in itself.
Bottomless Lakes State Park38 min19 mirouted
South-east of the city, a short run out to the chain of sinkhole lakes, which the state parks page puts 15 miles from Roswell. It is closer to an afternoon than a day trip.
Lincoln Historic Site1 hr 15 min57 mirouted
West toward the mountains, a preserved nineteenth-century community: the state's Lincoln Historic Site manages most of the historical buildings in the town at the centre of the Lincoln County War, 1878–1881. It is a historic district with museum buildings in it rather than a single museum: the site lists 17 structures, 7 of them open year round as museums and 2 more seasonally.
Ruidoso1 hr 35 min74 mirouted
Up into the Sacramento Mountains, where the Village of Ruidoso's tourism site gives an official elevation of 6,920 feet, against 3,615 feet in Roswell, and describes the village as surrounded by the landscapes of the Lincoln National Forest. The village's municipal site describes the altitude as relief from the desert heat of the surrounding high desert.
Fort Sumner1 hr 55 min84 mirouted
North-east, with the Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner, on the site of the Bosque Redondo Indian Reservation (1863 to 1868), where Diné (Navajo) and Ndé (Mescalero Apache) people were interned. New Mexico Historic Sites says the memorial, created in 2005 with strong support from the Diné and Ndé, stands to acknowledge the events of the 1860s and to let those affected by the history tell it in their own voice. It is a memorial site; the memorial's own materials are the place to prepare for what it covers.

Practical Road Trip Info

No interstate serves Roswell. US 285 north–south and US 70/380 east–west are the roads, and distances between towns out here are long with little in between. Fuel accordingly.

Half a day covers the town. The UFO museum and the Roswell Museum together are an afternoon; Roswell is more often a stop between Carlsbad and the north than a destination in itself.

It is hot and exposed in summer at 3,615 feet on an open plain. Spring and autumn are easier for anything outdoors.

The UFO Festival fills the town, and the sources disagree on when it started — one says it began on the 50th anniversary of the incident, another that it has run since 1995. Either way it is a summer event: New Mexico Magazine’s July 2026 datebook places the annual festival over the Fourth of July weekend, running July 2–4 that year. We were unable to confirm dates for the next festival; the festival’s own site is the place to check the current schedule.

The Local Debate

13

Family-Friendly

▣

The UFO museum's exhibits

Accounts, models and newspaper reproductions laid out at a level children can follow, with enough theatre to hold them. Confirm hours before arriving.

▣

The Goddard workshop

The Roswell Museum's recreated Goddard rocket workshop is not open to visitors while the museum is closed after the October 2024 flood. The city publishes a virtual tour of the workshop, built by an educator for classroom use, with a lesson plan generator for teachers.

▣

Bottomless Lakes

Sinkhole lakes where the state parks page lists swimming among the activities, with trails that include the .86-mile Bluff Trail and the .54-mile Wetlands Trail. A change of pace from the indoor stops in town.

▣

The alien street lamps

The downtown lamps are shaped like alien heads, according to New Mexico Magazine, and spotting them is a free game that fills the walk along Main Street.
