San Francisco

A city so steep that in 1873 it started hauling carriages up the hills by gripping a cable running under the street, and still does.

What to Know Before You Arrive

Settlers from New Spain established the Presidio of San Francisco on 29 June 1776, and the city was incorporated on 15 April 1850. Its own reference entry is inconsistent about the mission's founding date, giving both June and October of 1776, so treat precise claims about that week with care.

The terrain is the organising fact. The city is “known for its steep rolling hills”, averaging 52 feet above sea level but rising to 934 feet at Mount Davidson. That is why the cable cars exist, why the street grid behaves oddly, and why two destinations a few blocks apart on a map can be a serious climb in practice.

The two bridges were finished a year apart: the Bay Bridge in 1936 and the Golden Gate in 1937. For a driver that pairing still defines the city's approaches — one from the east across the bay, one from the north across the strait — and both are worth building a route around rather than simply crossing.

03

The Road Trip Stop

The cable cars are the anchor, and they are a working transport system rather than a heritage ride. They have run since 1873, when the first line went up Clay Street.

Ride them as transport, not as an attraction

  • They go where the hills are. That is the entire point of the system — the lines exist on the gradients that defeated horses. Riding one as a way of getting somewhere makes more sense than queueing at a turntable for the experience.
  • SFMTA, the city's transit agency, runs three cable car lines: California, Powell/Hyde and Powell/Mason. Its fares page lists a single ride at $9*, good for one-way travel on one line, with no transfers between cable car lines. The route pages give service from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily on Powell/Hyde and Powell/Mason and from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily on California. Fares, hours and routes change, so check the SFMTA cable car page before relying on them.
  • Muni covers the centre. SFMTA describes Muni as a network of buses, light-rail Metro trains, historic streetcars and cable cars that covers all corners of the city.
  • Build the drive around the bridges instead. The Bay Bridge from the east and the Golden Gate from the north are where a car earns its place here.

Hidden Gems

▣

The cable car machinery

The Cable Car Museum, at 1201 Mason Street, occupies the Washington/Mason cable car barn and powerhouse; its own site says the museum deck overlooks the engines and winding wheels that pull the cables, and that admission is free. Its information page lists 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday to Sunday, closed Monday; check that page before going.

▣

Mount Davidson

The city's highest point at 934 feet, with a path to the top. Far quieter than the better-known viewpoints.

▣

Alcatraz

An island run by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Access is by ferry from Alcatraz Landing at Pier 33, operated by Alcatraz City Cruises under contract to the Park Service, and the ferry ticket includes a cellhouse audio tour. The Park Service strongly recommends reserving tickets in advance.

▣

The Presidio's coastal trail

The Presidio Trust describes the 2.7-mile Presidio segment of the California Coastal Trail as connecting Baker Beach to the Golden Gate Bridge, with a listed walking time of 48 minutes. It lists the surface as asphalt and compacted soil and notes a bicycle/pedestrian bridge from the route to the Golden Gate Bridge for access to the Marin Headlands.

07

The Food Stop

The Ferry Plaza Farmers Market is held at the Ferry Building, at Embarcadero and Market Streets, and is operated by Foodwise. Its page lists Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., year round, and links to each week's picks and market updates.

Opening hours, tour times, tasting fees and who may come in change without notice and belong to the producer. A blank is something we did not confirm, not something they lack. 8 of these say something about children, in their own words above. Where there is no Children line, we did not find a policy — that is not the same as children being welcome, and several tasting rooms are 21 and over.

This is a list of what is near you, not a recommendation of any of it. Events are listed by the month they usually fall in, because that is what we hold — we do not publish dates, and a month is not a promise. Check the organiser before you plan around one. One entry is marked with an asterisk: we could not confirm part of what is listed, and the note under it says which part. Opening times, line-ups and ticketing change without notice, so check the venue’s or organiser’s own site — every name above links to it.

This is a list of what is near you, not a recommendation of any of it. Opening times and prices here are quoted from each operator’s own page on the date we read it, and both change without notice. Where this list says an operator does not publish their hours or their price, that is what we found on their page — 4 of these publish no hours and 7 state no price. A blank is not “free” and not “always open”, so ring ahead where it matters. Every name above links to that page.

Practical Road Trip Info

Parking on a hill has its own rule. SFMTA's parking guide says that on a street with a grade of 3% or more, front wheels are angled so the vehicle would roll into the curb and not into traffic, and the parking brake is set; the Department of Public Works Street Grade Map shows a street's grade.

Summer is the foggy season. The National Weather Service describes summertime in San Francisco as characterized by cool marine air and persistent coastal stratus and fog. The National Park Service says the warmest months are usually September and October, and that the city can be foggy and windy at any time of the year.

The hills are not a metaphor. A route that looks like a short walk on a map can be a 200-foot climb; check the contours as well as the distance.

Alcatraz tickets are sold in advance. The National Park Service says access to the island is through a ferry company under contract to the Park Service, and strongly recommends advance reservations, with tickets sold up to 90 days ahead. The ferry operator's FAQ says tours frequently sell out a week or more in advance and that tickets are rarely available for same-day sailings.

One public campground within 25 miles of San Francisco, and it takes reservations. Public campgrounds run by federal agencies. State-park and private campgrounds are not included.

▣

Riding a cable car

A moving vehicle gripping a cable under the road is a mechanism children can actually see working.

▣

The mini-game on this page

The Mini Game section lower on this page, titled “Play 5 Questions from San Francisco”, is a short multiple-choice quiz about the city.

▣

Alcatraz by ferry

The Park Service runs a Junior Ranger program on the island: the booklet can be downloaded to bring along, and copies are also available at the Dock Information Station. The ferry ticket includes a cellhouse audio tour. The ferry operator says tours frequently sell out a week or more in advance.

▣

The Presidio

Open parkland under the Golden Gate Bridge with room to run and the bridge directly overhead.

The cable cars

Running since
1873, when the first cars carried passengers up Clay Street
What it is
A working public transport system, not a heritage attraction — the cars grip a cable running continuously beneath the street
Fares and hours
We were unable to confirm current fares, operating hours or line routes; these are set by the city transit agency and change
Driving
Central San Francisco is poor driving and expensive parking; the car is better used for the bridges and day trips

We checked operating status, reservations, opening hours, fees and seasonal opening on 2026-10-12. These change without notice — confirm with sfmta.com, nps.gov, sonomacounty.com, alcatrazcitycruises.com, foodwise.org and cablecarmuseum.org the week you travel.
