What to Know Before You Arrive

The settlement was established in 1903, first appeared on the 1910 census as an unincorporated village, and formally incorporated on 1 June 1912. It is named for William H. Seward, who as Secretary of State oversaw the purchase of Alaska in 1867.

For a road-trip guide the town's significance is structural: it is where several kinds of transport stop. Seward is the southern terminus of the Alaska Railroad, and the Seward Highway provides the road connection north to Anchorage. Having flown into Anchorage and driven down, this is the end of the line in a literal sense.

Kenai Fjords National Park borders the town and “was granted national park status in 1980 to protect the glaciers of the Harding Icefield.” Almost all of it is reachable only by boat or aircraft. The Exit Glacier area is the exception — the one part of the park a car can enter — and President Obama visited it in 2015 to speak about climate change.

03

The Road Trip Stop

The Exit Glacier area of Kenai Fjords National Park is the anchor, and the park describes it as “the beautiful valley carved by Exit Glacier.” It holds trails, a nature centre and a small campground, and it is the only road-accessible part of the park.

Check the road is open before anything else

  • The road closes to cars from late October to mid-May. The area itself stays open all year, but the access road is shut by snow for roughly half of it, and the park advises checking current conditions in the off season. This is the single fact that decides whether a Seward trip works.
  • The turning is easy to miss. Turn onto Herman Leirer Road at mile 3 of the Seward Highway (AK-9), then drive 8.4 miles to the nature centre car park.
  • Three trails, three levels of commitment. The Glacier View Loop Trail is one mile and accessible, running through cottonwood forest to a view of the glacier; the Glacier Overlook Trail adds 0.6 miles and is “moderately strenuous”; the Harding Icefield Trail is an 8-mile round trip and a full day.
  • There is no entrance fee. The National Park Service lists no entrance charge for Kenai Fjords, and the park is open year-round. The boat trips into the fjords are a separate commercial cost.

Hidden Gems

▣

The Harding Icefield Trail

Eight miles round trip climbing out of the valley to look across the icefield the park exists to protect. A full day and a serious climb.

▣

The Alaska SeaLife Center

A public aquarium on the shores of Resurrection Bay, at Mile 0 of the Seward Highway. Its own site says it combines the aquarium with marine research, education and wildlife response, including marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation. The center lists Thursday to Monday, 12:00pm–5:00pm, from 1 October 2026 to 3 March 2027 (closed Tuesday and Wednesday), and a daily schedule from 4 March 2027. We were unable to confirm the fees for the current season: the center says ticket prices vary by date and entry time, so check its ticket page before planning around them.

▣

The end of the railroad

The southern terminus of the Alaska Railroad is in this town of 2,717. Standing where the line stops is a small thing that explains a lot about Alaskan geography.

▣

Resurrection Bay by boat

Most of Kenai Fjords can only be reached by water, and the Park Service records boat tours leaving Seward's small boat harbour daily through the summer months, running three to nine hours. Private companies run them rather than the park, so the fare and the booking are theirs, and a reservation is needed.

07

The Food Stop

Seward's eating is concentrated downtown and around the small boat harbour, and it is strongly seasonal — a town of 2,717 that serves cruise and summer traffic runs a very different calendar in January. We were unable to confirm a specific Seward restaurant for this guide, and this guide does not name a business without checking that business's own site. If you are driving down from Anchorage, treat that city as the reliable resupply point.

One brewpub within 10 miles of Seward. In a small town that is often the kitchen still serving when everywhere else has stopped.

*Check before you go. This list says what the source records as open and where it is — nothing more. The Home Teams

No MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL or MLS team plays anywhere near Seward, which at 2,717 people is among the smallest places in this guide. Anchorage is about 77 miles north of Seward in a straight line.

Up Herman Leirer Road from mile 3 of the Seward Highway, 8.4 miles to the nature centre. Road closed late October to mid-May.
Kenai Fjords by boat——
Full-day tours venture out to the park’s tidewater glaciers, and half-day tours stay in the more protected waters of Resurrection Bay, according to the Park Service. Boat only.

The drive back up toward Turnagain Arm and Anchorage, which is the scenic route in its own right.
Cooper Landing and the Kenai River1 hr 10 min48 mirouted
North-west of Seward, about 28 miles in a straight line, on the Sterling Highway, which passes through Cooper Landing. Alaska State Parks says the Upper Kenai River parallels the highway in several areas between Cooper Landing and Skilak Lake, and describes its glacial water as turquoise.
Homer4 hr 5 min168 mirouted
About 80 miles west-south-west of Seward in a straight line, at the southern end of the Sterling Highway. Homer sits on Kachemak Bay, and the Homer Spit, a gravel bar 4.5 miles long, extends into the bay with Homer Harbor on it.

Routed figures are computed over map data at free-flowing speeds, between map points rather than street addresses, so a real drive runs longer. Rows marked estimated are this guide’s own figure and have not been routed.

Where there is no badge we did not confirm one — that is not a judgement on the place, and a good many municipal, state and university sites belong to no register we check. Practical Road Trip Info

The glacier road's season decides the trip. Closed to cars late October to mid-May, which removes the main road-accessible attraction for half the year.

Most of the national park has no road at all. Seeing the fjords themselves means a boat, booked ahead in season.

It is the end of the line in two senses. The railroad stops here and the highway does too; plan the return rather than assuming a loop.

Resupply in Anchorage. A town of 2,717 has limited and seasonal shopping.

6 public campgrounds within 25 miles of Seward, all bookable ahead. Public campgrounds run by federal agencies. State-park and private campgrounds are not included.

The Local Debate

13

Family-Friendly

▣

The Glacier View Loop Trail

One mile, accessible, through cottonwood forest to a view of the glacier — the easiest glacier walk for a family in the state.

▣

The Alaska SeaLife Center

A public aquarium on the shores of Resurrection Bay where, the center says, visitors have close encounters with puffins, octopus, harbour seals, sea lions and other Alaska marine life. The center lists Thursday to Monday, 12:00pm–5:00pm, from 1 October 2026 to 3 March 2027, and daily 9:00am–7:00pm from 28 May to 15 August 2027.

▣

A fjord day boat

The Park Service says a boat tour can show a tidewater glacier and the numerous birds and marine mammals of the fjords from a motorized vessel. Book ahead in season.

▣

The end of the railroad

Watching a train arrive at the point where the line simply stops is a concrete lesson in why Alaska works the way it does.
