What to Know Before You Arrive
Sioux Falls was chartered in 1856 on the banks of the Big Sioux River and incorporated as a city on February 4, 1879, named simply for the waterfall that put it on the map. The falls themselves are far older than the city: the cascades were carved roughly 14,000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age. The rock underneath is Sioux quartzite, a pink, nearly indestructible stone that is part of why no one has managed to dam the falls for long — and why so much of downtown, from a courthouse to a former high school, is built out of the same rock the river still runs over.
That quartzite shows up everywhere downtown. The Old Courthouse, completed in 1893 and reportedly the largest courthouse between Chicago and Denver at the time, is built from it, with a clock tower from the same year; it now holds the Old Courthouse Museum. A few blocks away, the Washington Pavilion opened in 1999 inside a 1908 high school building faced in the same pink Sioux quartzite, and now holds a science center, an art museum and two theaters instead of homerooms. Downtown also carries an outdoor sculpture exhibit, SculptureWalk, running every year since 2003 and free to walk any time; its anchor piece is the Arc of Dreams, a stainless-steel arc nearly the length of a football field spanning the Big Sioux River.
In 1992, Money magazine ranked Sioux Falls the number one place to live in the country, out of the 300 largest U.S. metro areas. South Dakota has no state corporate income tax, and the state has drawn a cluster of financial companies as a result — part of why your bank statement or credit card bill might carry a Sioux Falls return address. The popular version of that story starts and ends with Citibank, but the 1980 law that actually erased South Dakota’s interest-rate cap was written to unstick credit for farmers and small businesses, not to recruit a bank; Citibank was simply the company that moved fastest once the door was open.
The Road Trip Stop
Falls Park is the anchor, and it is free. More than 128 acres surround the cascades where the Big Sioux River drops an average of 7,400 gallons a second over pink quartzite bedrock, a scene created around 14,000 years ago that has outlasted every attempt to dam it for long. A five-story observation tower next to the visitor center gives a 360-degree view of the falls and the downtown skyline, reached by elevator, and it is free to ride to the top. The ruined foundation of the old Queen Bee Mill, a seven-story flour mill built of on-site quartzite that opened in 1881 and failed within two years, still sits at the edge of the park — proof this river has beaten more than one business plan.
Budget the time
- Give it 60–90 minutes for the falls, the tower, and a look at the Queen Bee Mill ruins.
- The observation tower runs daily, roughly 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and closes 10 minutes before the visitor center; hours shift by season and the tower is closed on Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve/Day, so check ahead.
- Eat at Falls Overlook Café, inside the old 1908 hydroelectric plant across the water from the tower, open for lunch and dinner in the summer months.
- Pair it with the Old Courthouse Museum, a short walk south on the same quartzite the falls are named for, or follow the Arc of Dreams into downtown’s SculptureWalk.
Neighborhoods
Downtown & Phillips Avenue
The walkable retail and dining core, where SculptureWalk installations line the sidewalks and change every spring. This is also where the Arc of Dreams crosses the river.
Cathedral Historic District
Once known as Nob Hill, a National Register district of Queen Anne and Mediterranean Revival homes built by the city’s early bankers and politicians, centered on the 1916 Cathedral of Saint Joseph. Listed in 1974 with 223 buildings inside its boundary.
McKennan Park
A tree-lined residential neighborhood south of downtown, anchored by the park of the same name and known for porches, mature trees and an easy walk to shops on 26th Street.
8th & Railroad
The downtown Eastbank, where 8th & Railroad Center (401 E. 8th St.) holds a mix of shops and restaurants, according to Experience Sioux Falls. Remedy Brewing Company runs a taproom in the building, which its own site calls the historic 8th & Railroad building.
The Food Stop
CH Patisserie is a French pastry shop in downtown Sioux Falls run by chef Chris Hanmer, a former World Pastry Team Championship gold medalist and Ritz-Carlton executive pastry chef. The case runs to croissants and macarons.
Phillips Avenue Diner began as a silver Airstream trailer known as the Market Diner on Louise Avenue in 1996, according to the diner’s own site; the building was later moved to its downtown location and renamed. It was named one of Food Network’s best classic diners in all 50 states, and the booths, tile floor and framed downtown-history photos are part of the draw as much as the breakfast.

The Home Teams
Sioux Falls Canaries
American Association (independent baseball)Playing at Sioux Falls Stadium since 1993, the Canaries won the American Association championship in 2008 on a walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th of Game 4, on their home field. Cheap tickets and an old-school ballpark.
Sioux Falls Skyforce
NBA G LeagueFounded in 1989, the Skyforce are the longest-running minor-league basketball franchise in the country and have been the Miami Heat’s single-affiliate G League team since 2013. They won the 2016 D-League championship after the winningest regular season in the league’s history.
Sioux Falls Stampede
USHL (junior hockey)Founded in 1999, the Stampede have won four Clark Cup championships, most recently in 2025–26, and hold the USHL’s single-season attendance record. Forty-four alumni have gone on to play in the NHL — this is a legitimate pipeline, not just junior hockey for its own sake.
Teams in the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and MLS play in Minneapolis–St. Paul; Minneapolis is about 198 miles north-east of Sioux Falls in a straight line. Plan the trip around the Stampede or a Skyforce game instead.

|---|---|---|---|
| Palisades State Park & Devil’s Gulch, Garretson | 39 min | 21 mi | routed |
| Pink Sioux quartzite cliffs up to 50 feet high, 1.2 billion years old, cut by Split Rock Creek. Nearby Devil’s Gulch is where local legend says outlaw Jesse James leapped an 18-foot ravine on horseback to escape a posse in 1876 — a story that first appeared in print in 1922, four decades after the fact, and that most historians doubt is physically possible. There is a footbridge over the gulch today so you can look down and decide for yourself. | |||

| Pipestone National Monument, MN | 1 hr 5 min | 49 mi | routed |
| Sacred catlinite quarries used by tribal nations for at least 3,000 years to carve ceremonial pipes; a three-quarter-mile trail passes the quarries and a small waterfall, and enrolled tribal members can still apply for a free quarrying permit. | |||

| A Moorish Revival arena whose murals are torn down and rebuilt from roughly 325,000 ears of corn every single year, a tradition running since 1892; it costs an estimated $175,000 each time, as of 2018. | |||

Practical Road Trip Info
Budget one full day for downtown, Falls Park and the museums, or two if you want a day trip to Palisades or Pipestone without rushing.
Best season is roughly late May through September. Winters run cold and dry rather than snowy and mild — the record low is −42°F, set in February 1899, and the record high is 110°F, set in June 1988.
Falls Park itself is free and open 5 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. daily. The observation tower keeps shorter, seasonal hours on top of that, so treat the park and the tower as two separate schedules.
Downtown parking is a mix of metered street spots, ramps and lots, with more than 4,000 public spaces, according to the city. The standard rate is $1.50* per hour, enforced Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ramps and lots are free after 5 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends, and meters require payment on Saturdays; the city advises checking posted signs for time limits.
*Fees subject to change, please check siouxfalls.gov for updated information.
The Local Debate
Family-Friendly
Great Plains Zoo
A 45-acre zoo with more than 1,000 animals across 137 species, open nearly every day of the year. Best for kids who want to move around after a car ride.
Butterfly House & Aquarium
A tropical conservatory with hundreds of free-flying butterflies, according to its operator (Experience Sioux Falls lists over 800), plus a saltwater aquarium; the operator’s site says it is the only public saltwater aquarium in the Dakotas. The campus is in Sertoma Park, separate from the Great Plains Zoo campus.
The Falls Park observation tower
Free, elevator-accessible, and the kind of view that keeps kids at the window instead of asking when it’s time to leave.
A Canaries or Skyforce game
Cheap tickets, short lines and an easy exit if attention spans run out early.
