What to Know Before You Arrive

Fifty German-American families, most from the Bavarian town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, bought 1,165 acres of a Spanish-era rancho in 1857 and formed the Anaheim Vineyard Company at $750 a share to build a wine colony. They named it by blending “Ana,” for the nearby Santa Ana River, with the German suffix -heim, meaning home; the original spelling was Annaheim before it got simplified. It stayed a citrus-and-vineyard town for almost a century, which makes what happened next look less like destiny and more like an accident of cheap farmland.

This guide's stretch of “SoCal” means Anaheim and the ring of Orange County it anchors — not the downtown Los Angeles skyline forty minutes north or the San Diego waterfront ninety minutes south, which each have a guide of their own. Walt Disney bought 160 acres of Anaheim orange groves and walnut trees and opened Disneyland on July 17, 1955, for $17 million, or about $157 million today. It has logged more than 757 million cumulative visits as of a count taken in December 2021, and in 2024 alone drew 17.33 million people through the gates, making it the second-most-visited theme park on Earth that year. Orange groves to the most-visited theme park on the continent is not a normal small-town trajectory.

The region is not only Disneyland. In August 2022, Anaheim officially designated a mile-long stretch of Brookhurst Street as Little Arabia, home to Orange County’s Arab American community of more than 24,000 people and, at the time of the designation, the first Arab American cultural district recognized by any city in the United States. Head the other direction and the coast takes over: Huntington Beach didn’t officially become “Surf City USA” until 1991, after Jan and Dean’s Dean Torrance helped make the case to city officials. A theme-park capital, a cultural district, and a trademarked surf town, all inside the same twenty-minute drive.

03

The Road Trip Stop

Disneyland Park is still the anchor, standing on the same ground Walt Disney bought as orange groves. It opened July 17, 1955, cost $17 million to build ($157 million in 2024 dollars), and famously did not go smoothly on day one: about half of the roughly 28,000 people who showed up had counterfeit tickets or had climbed the fence, rides broke down, food and drinks ran out, and one door was left unlocked long enough for a guest to find the castle empty inside. The day is still called “Black Sunday” inside the company. It’s now paired with Disney California Adventure and Downtown Disney as one resort, and it has logged more cumulative visits than any other theme park in the world.

Budget the time

  • One-day ticket prices vary by date. Disney’s own planning guide says so, and the company states that its lowest-priced one-day, one-park Disneyland Resort ticket has stayed at $104* since 2019. The resort’s ticket calendar lists the available dates and prices.
  • Park entry takes a ticket and a reservation for the same park on the same date. Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park are separate parks; the resort’s Park Hopper page says a Park Hopper ticket, or a Magic Key pass with a reservation to both parks, allows a visit to more than one theme park per day.
  • Tram service links the Mickey & Friends and Pixar Pals parking structures to the park entrances. The resort’s parking page says trams run from both structures to the Main Entrance Esplanade between Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park, while the Toy Story Parking Area is served by buses.
  • Downtown Disney District is open without a theme park ticket, according to the resort’s own page, which lists daily hours of 7:00 AM – 1:00 AM, with Thursdays closing at 11:00 PM; individual shops and restaurants within the district may have different operating hours.

Neighborhoods

Disneyland Resort & Downtown Disney
The theme-park core: Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure behind the gates, with the free-to-enter Downtown Disney district of shops and restaurants strung between them and the resort hotels.

Anaheim Packing District & the Platinum Triangle
A few miles east, Angel Stadium and Honda Center anchor the Platinum Triangle, while a restored 1919 citrus packing house downtown now runs as a food hall — the part of Anaheim that has nothing to do with Mickey Mouse.

Little Arabia
A mile-long stretch of west Anaheim’s Brookhurst Street, officially recognized by the city in 2022, dense with Arab restaurants, bakeries, and hookah lounges serving Orange County’s Arab American community.

The OC Coast
Huntington Beach, Newport Beach and Laguna Beach, strung along roughly twenty miles of Pacific Coast Highway south of Anaheim — a surf town, a harbor town, and an art-colony town that don’t much resemble each other.

Hidden Gems

▣

Anaheim Packing House

A 1919 Sunkist citrus packing house, built in Spanish Colonial Revival style, that sat vacant for decades before reopening as a 42,000-square-foot food hall in 2014; it made the National Register of Historic Places the following year.

▣

Crystal Cove Historic District

Forty-six wood-frame beach cottages built in the 1920s and ’30s along the sand between Newport Beach and Laguna Beach, twenty-nine of them restored and twenty-one available to rent as part of the state park.

▣

Sugar ’n Spice, Balboa Island

A frozen-banana stand running since 1945, a few years after the treat itself was invented nearby on the Balboa Peninsula around 1940. Locals still treat it as a tradition rather than a novelty.

▣

Christ Cathedral, Garden Grove

Architect Philip Johnson’s all-glass Crystal Cathedral, built for televangelist Robert Schuller and described after its 1981 opening as the largest glass building in the world at the time, is now a Roman Catholic cathedral; the Diocese of Orange bought it out of bankruptcy for $57.5 million in 2011 and consecrated it in 2019.

06

The Food Stop

The Anaheim Packing House is the easiest one-stop food answer in the region: a restored 1919 citrus packing house turned into a two-story food hall with no national chains inside, just locally run stalls under one roof.

On Balboa Island, Sugar ’n Spice has been dipping frozen bananas since 1945, a few years after Don Phillips opened the original frozen-banana stand on the nearby Balboa Peninsula around 1940. It’s minor local trivia that a version of that stand inspired the fictional Bluth family business on Arrested Development, a show set in Orange County.

The Home Teams

Los Angeles Angels

MLB
Angel Stadium · Anaheim

The Angels have played in Anaheim since 1966, first as the California Angels and, after several name changes, back to Los Angeles Angels since 2016 — the ballpark has never left the city regardless of what the jerseys said. Founded in 1961 by singing cowboy Gene Autry, the franchise won its only World Series in 2002, the year the Rally Monkey mascot became a genuine, if odd, part of the postseason. Angel Stadium seats 45,517 and is topped by the 230-foot “Big A” sign, a former scoreboard support relocated to the parking lot in 1980 that still carries a halo shining brighter after wins.

Anaheim Ducks

NHL
Honda Center · Anaheim

Named for the fictional youth hockey team in Disney’s 1992 film The Mighty Ducks, the franchise started as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in 1993 and shortened its name in 2006. The Ducks won their only Stanley Cup in 2007, beating the Ottawa Senators to become the first team from California, and the first from the NHL’s West Coast, to win it.

No NFL, NBA or MLS team plays inside this stretch of Orange County — the Rams, Chargers, Lakers, Clippers, Kings and Galaxy all play thirty to forty-five minutes north in the Los Angeles area. Baseball and hockey are the home games here.

Practical Road Trip Info

Budget at least two full days for Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure if you want both without racing the clock, plus a half-day for Little Arabia or the Packing District and another full day for the coast. Treating Anaheim as a one-night stop on I-5 means picking one park and skipping everything else in this guide.

Disneyland is scheduled to open 365 days a year, according to the resort’s press fact sheet, and the Disneyland Park page lists seasonal events with set dates: Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort from August 21 through October 31, 2026, and Holidays at Disneyland Park from November 13 through January 6, 2027. The coast adds its own wrinkle: NOAA says people in Southern California often call the low marine-layer cloud of early summer “May Gray” or “June Gloom.” A National Weather Service forecasters’ handbook for southwestern California describes a deep, persistent all-day overcast pattern in some areas in June, giving way by August to one where the beaches routinely clear during the mid-morning hours, with clearing occasionally as late as mid afternoon.

Parking rules differ between the resort and the beach towns. Disneyland’s parking page lists standard theme-park parking for a car or motorcycle at $40*. In Laguna Beach, Visit Laguna Beach says metered parking can fill up quickly in peak season, and city parking enforcement runs 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. In Newport Beach, most paid parking is enforced 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily, and several city lots charge higher hourly rates from May through September than from October through April.

Disneyland Park & Disney California Adventure

The reason most people are here in the first place — two full theme parks on one resort, connected by Downtown Disney.

▣

Knott’s Berry Farm

A genuine amusement park with real roller coasters and a section, Camp Snoopy, sized for younger children, plus the fried chicken dinner that made the Knott name before any of the rides did.

▣

Balboa Fun Zone

A 45-foot Ferris wheel that’s been turning on the Balboa Peninsula since 1936, a short walk from the original frozen-banana stand.

▣

Crystal Cove tide pools
