Boatmen who floated goods down the Mississippi River to Natchez and New Orleans sold their flatboats as lumber and walked or rode home along the Old Natchez Trace, because the boats were useless against the current. The Natchez Trace Parkway roughly follows that route for 444 miles to Nashville, and commercial vehicles are prohibited on it.
