Black Rock Desert volcanic field (Ice Springs lava flows and Tabernacle Hill)

Utah

The Utah Geological Survey describes the Black Rock Desert as the youngest volcanic field in Utah; west of Fillmore, the Ice Springs lava flows are named for natural icehouse conditions where ice and icicles can be found throughout the year beneath the blocky aa lava, and the Survey says sturdy hiking boots are recommended on that lava. Tabernacle Hill is reached by Lava Tubes Road; the Survey says its lava tubes extend for hundreds of yards, and that the BLM classifies Tabernacle Hill and Pahvant Butte as Areas of Critical Environmental Concern. Most routes into the field use unpaved but graded dirt roads, and the Survey names the BLM office in Fillmore (95 East 500 North, 435-743-3100, open 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday except federal holidays) for directions, maps and current conditions. No fee or hours are stated for the sites themselves.
