Colorado

Camp Hale-Continental Divide National Monument is a 53,804-acre monument in two units on White River National Forest land. At Camp Hale, which the Forest Service describes as the center of the Army's World War II mountain and winter training, a self-guided tour makes a loop of 10 stops, each with an interpretive sign; the main entrance, marked by stone pillars, is just off U.S. Highway 24 about 17 miles south of the I-70/Highway 24 intersection (exit 171, Minturn). No fees are required, potable water is not available and the page lists no restrooms; the Forest Service also lists an active alert that bars travel off roads and trails in parts of Camp Hale.

Designated a National Scenic Byway by the U.S. Secretary of Transportation; 75 miles in CO; FHWA suggests: 2.5 hours to drive or a couple of days to visit the byway. Distance from this stop to the route measured against the published byway centreline on the U.S. Department of Transportation map service (geo.dot.gov), which carries no stated licence and predates the 2021 designations; the measurement is ours, the line is theirs and is not reproduced here. 2.4 miles (checked 2026-10-29)Federal Highway Administration: Top of the RockiesChecked
