Golden Gate Bridge

California

The Golden Gate Bridge carries U.S. Highway 101 between San Francisco and the counties to the north, and the bridge district's Welcome Center, which has exhibits and merchandise, is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Pedestrians use the east sidewalk (the side facing San Francisco), open 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Pacific Daylight Time and 5:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in Pacific Standard Time; the district's alert says a sidewalk may close an hour early, at 8 p.m., in Pacific Daylight Time during construction, while cyclists have toll-free sidewalk access around the clock and bicycle rentals are not available at the bridge. The district says parking at both ends is extremely limited and strongly encourages arriving by transit, tour bus, ride-share, bicycle or on foot: the southeast visitor lot (37 spaces, open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.) charges $5* per hour with a three-hour maximum, the northeast Vista Point lot is free with a four-hour limit, and in 2026 both lots were closed from 11 a.m. to about 5 p.m. on weekends and holidays from Memorial Day weekend through October 12. Tolls are collected in one direction, southbound into San Francisco, and electronically, with cash tolls no longer collected; from July 1, 2026 a two-axle vehicle pays $10.25* with a FasTrak account, $10.50* with a license plate account or one-time payment, or $11.25* by toll invoice.
