What to Know Before You Arrive
Hilton Head Island is named for Captain William Hilton, who in 1663 identified the headland at the entrance to Port Royal Sound. During the Civil War, the island became an important base for the Union blockade of Southern ports. It incorporated as a municipality in 1983 and is recognized today for eco-friendly development practices.
The island has 12 miles of Atlantic beachfront, with public access points including Coligny Beach Park, Driessen Beach Park and Folly Field Beach Park, each with its own parking arrangements. The Town of Hilton Head Island provides over 72 miles of public pathways and nature trails for pedestrians and cyclists, and the Town lists more than 50 miles of further pathways and shared roadways within private developments for the use of their residents and guests. The Harbour Town Lighthouse, within Sea Pines Resort, is one of the island's most recognized landmarks, alongside the older Leamington Lighthouse, built in the 1870s on what is now the Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort.
After the Union victory, hundreds of formerly enslaved people settled the community of Mitchelville on Hilton Head Island. Their Gullah Geechee descendants remain part of the island's population today, part of a broader Gullah Geechee community of roughly 200,000 people along the coasts of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, with a distinctive creole language and culture reflecting West and Central African roots. Congress established the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor in 2006 to support preservation of Gullah Geechee historic sites; readers can learn directly from the Corridor's own site, linked below.
The Road Trip Stop
Hilton Head's beaches and multi-use paths are the island's central outdoor draw: 12 miles of Atlantic beachfront reached through several public access points, connected by an island-wide network of paths for walking and cycling.
What the visit involves
- Public beach access points include Coligny Beach Park, Driessen Beach Park and Folly Field Beach Park, each with its own parking setup.
- The island's public pathway network totals over 72 miles of pathways and nature trails for pedestrians and cyclists, according to the Town of Hilton Head Island, and the Town's pathway map highlights the beach parks that give access to the public beaches.
- The Harbour Town Lighthouse sits within Sea Pines Resort as one of the island's most photographed landmarks.
- Beach parking and path conditions: parking is free at Coligny Beach Park; at the Town's other beach parks visitors pay $3* per hour per vehicle Monday through Friday and $5* per hour on Saturdays and Sundays, with fees enforced daily from 7 am to 5 pm during the peak beach season of March 1 through September 7. The Town says payment is through a phone app and cash is no longer accepted; we were unable to confirm the parking rules outside the peak season. The Town's pathways page also links a service for reporting unsafe pathway conditions.
