What to Know Before You Arrive

Mobile, Alabama's only deep-water port, had an estimated population of 204,689 following a 2023 annexation, making it the state's second-most populous city. French colonists founded the city in 1702, and it served as the first capital of French Louisiana from 1702 until 1711, when the capital moved to Biloxi and later to New Orleans.

Mobile describes its Mardi Gras as "the oldest official Carnival celebration in the United States, started by Frenchman Nicholas Langlois in 1703 when Mobile was the capital of Louisiana." Traditions now closely associated with New Orleans and South Louisiana — masked balls, parades, floats and throws — were first featured in Mobile, according to that same account, though the claim to the original celebration is a subject of dispute. The Order of Myths, founded in 1867, is Mobile's oldest continuously parading Mardi Gras society.

Mobile Bay's western shore holds Battleship Memorial Park, home to the World War II battleship USS Alabama, preserved as a museum ship since January 9, 1965, after the state's schoolchildren helped raise funds for her preservation. South of the city, the barrier island of Dauphin Island holds Fort Gaines, an 1821 fort central to the Civil War's Battle of Mobile Bay, along with beaches and the Audubon Bird Sanctuary.

The Road Trip Stop

Battleship Memorial Park, on Mobile Bay's western shore, is home to the USS Alabama, a World War II South Dakota-class battleship preserved as a museum ship, and the USS Drum, a World War II submarine. Both ships are National Historic Landmarks.

Budget the time

  • The park's group-tour page says touring groups should allow 2.5 hours to tour the park, with the USS Alabama, the USS Drum and the Medal of Honor Aircraft Pavilion included; its field-trip page says 2 to 2.5 hours for the self-guided tour.
  • The park's admissions page lists admission of $18.00* for ages 12-55, $15.00* for ages 55+ and $6.00* for ages 6-11, plus a $5.00* general parking fee per vehicle, with the park open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day except Christmas Day and the last ticket sold at 4:00 p.m.
  • A replica of the Confederate submarine CSS H. L. Hunley, built in Mobile, has been on display in the park since 2003.
  • Hurricane Katrina caused more than $7 million in damage to the park in 2005, closing it until January 2006; the aircraft and ships on display today reflect the park's rebuilding since.
