What to Know Before You Arrive

Bar Harbor, on Mount Desert Island, had a year-round population of 5,089 at the 2020 census, though it fills with visitors each summer and fall. Originally incorporated as Eden in 1796, the town became a Gilded Age resort in the late 1800s, rivaling Newport, Rhode Island, with wealthy families building grand summer estates; it was renamed Bar Harbor in 1918. In October 1947, a wildfire fueled by drought and high winds burned nearly half of the island's eastern side and more than 10,000 acres of what is now Acadia National Park, destroying five of the town's historic grand hotels; the town's business district was spared and today anchors a historic downtown.

Acadia National Park, covering roughly half of Mount Desert Island along with parts of the Schoodic Peninsula and Isle au Haut, was first protected as Sieur de Monts National Monument in 1916, renamed Lafayette National Park in 1919, and became Acadia National Park in 1929 — the first national park east of the Mississippi River and still the only one in the Northeastern United States. Between 1915 and 1940, philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Jr. financed, designed and directed a network of carriage roads through the park, originally about 57 miles of crushed-stone road closed to motor vehicles; about 45 miles remain maintained and open to hikers, cyclists and horseback riders today.

Cadillac Mountain, the tallest peak on the U.S. Atlantic coast, is reachable by a summit road that has required a timed vehicle reservation since 2021, in effect roughly late May through late October, to manage traffic and parking; walkers, cyclists and taxis don't need one. The park set an all-time visitation record of 4,079,318 recreation visits in 2025, and its free, propane-fueled Island Explorer bus system carried its ten-millionth rider in September 2024.

The Road Trip Stop

Acadia's Park Loop Road circles past Thunder Hole, Jordan Pond, Sand Beach and the side road up Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the U.S. Atlantic coast. A standard park entrance pass costs $20–$35*, and driving the Cadillac Summit Road requires a separate, timed vehicle reservation costing $6* per vehicle, both according to the National Park Service's own fee page.

Budget the time

  • The Cadillac Summit Road vehicle reservation is required from May 20 through October 25 and provides a timed entry window, with no required departure time until the road closes at 9 p.m.
  • Reservations are per vehicle, not per person, and don't allow re-entry; walkers, cyclists and taxis can access the summit without one.
  • The park recommends planning three to four hours, including some stops, for the entire 27-mile Park Loop Road.
  • The park does not accept cash at its entrance stations, per its own fee page.

*Fees subject to change, please check nps.gov for updated information.

Practical Road Trip Info

A single day covers the Park Loop Road's highlights; hiking the carriage roads, a boat tour or the Schoodic Peninsula each add at least another half day.

Book the Cadillac Summit Road vehicle reservation before arriving, since it is required from May 20 through October 25 and is a separate booking from the park entrance pass.

The free Island Explorer bus connects Bar Harbor to most park destinations and is partly funded by park entrance fees.

Cadillac Mountain is not served by the Island Explorer bus, so reaching the summit means driving with a reservation, walking, or cycling.
