What to Know Before You Arrive

Freeport, once part of North Yarmouth and known as Harraseeket, was incorporated in 1789 and grew as four separate villages — Mast Landing, Porter's Landing, South Freeport and Freeport Corner — built on shipbuilding, timber and farming; all four are now part of the Harraseeket Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town had 8,737 residents at the 2020 census.

In 1912, Leon Leonwood Bean opened a store in his brother's shop at Freeport Corner selling the "Bean Boot," and the business grew into L.L. Bean. In 1951 the flagship store began staying open 24 hours a day; it kept that schedule continuously except for a brief interruption in 1962 over Maine's blue laws (reversed by a town vote), and closures to mark the deaths of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, founder Leon L. Bean in 1967, and grandson Leon Gorman in 2015. Its longest closure came in March 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic shut all L.L. Bean stores indefinitely for the first time in the store's history for more than 24 hours; the company began reopening stores in May 2020. The company's own store page lists the flagship's hours as 12 AM to 12 AM, every day of the week.

Freeport's outlet district around L.L. Bean drew an estimated 3.5 million visitors a year as of 2015, spending $308 million that year. Beyond shopping, the town is also home to the Desert of Maine, a 20-acre expanse of glacial sand exposed by 19th-century overfarming and opened as a tourist attraction in 1925, and Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park, a 244-acre park on Casco Bay.

The Road Trip Stop

L.L. Bean's flagship store at Freeport Corner is the anchor of the town's outlet district, occupying a 220,000-square-foot retail campus. The original 1912 store famously began staying open 24 hours a day in 1951, a policy the company maintained for decades with only a handful of exceptions.

Budget the time

  • The flagship store at 95 Main Street lists its hours as 12 AM to 12 AM, every day of the week.
  • The flagship campus includes multiple connected buildings covering outdoor equipment, clothing and home goods.
  • L.L. Bean has closed the flagship for specific occasions in the past, including presidential and company-founder deaths and, for the first time in its history, the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Downtown Freeport's other outlet stores are within walking distance of the L.L. Bean campus.

Practical Road Trip Info

A half day covers the outlet district and the Desert of Maine; adding Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park or South Freeport's harbor extends a visit to a full day.

The flagship keeps a round-the-clock schedule, so a late-night or overnight stop can be planned around it.

The Desert of Maine and Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park are separate attractions on opposite sides of town, each requiring its own stop.

Freeport's outlet district draws an estimated 3.5 million visitors a year, a figure from 2015, so summer and holiday weekends bring significant traffic and parking demand.
