What to Know Before You Arrive

Springfield sits on the Connecticut River in western Massachusetts, in the region known as the Pioneer Valley, and was the third most populous city in the state at the 2020 census. It carries several old nicknames: “The City of Firsts,” for innovations that include the first American dictionary and the first American gas-powered automobile; “The City of Homes,” for its Victorian residential architecture; and “Hoop City,” because physician James Naismith invented basketball here in 1891.

The Springfield Armory was the United States' primary center for manufacturing military firearms from 1777 until 1968, and was the first federal armory built in the country. During the Civil War it produced most of the weaponry Union troops carried, and the “Springfield rifle” name traces to this facility. Its 1968 closure by Defense Secretary Robert McNamara is described by sources as controversial; the site was turned over to the National Park Service and now houses the Springfield Armory Museum, and the surrounding grounds became home to Springfield Technical Community College.

In Metro Center, a cluster of museums known as the Quadrangle surrounds the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden, a free outdoor park with statues of Springfield native Theodor Geisel's characters. Four museums on the Quadrangle — the Michele and Donald D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts, the Springfield Science Museum, the Lyman and Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History and the Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum — are covered by one admission ticket, operated together as Springfield Museums; a fifth, the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum, is currently closed for restoration, with the museum's own site listing a planned late-October reopening.

The Road Trip Stop

The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame has stood in its current, 80,000-square-foot silver-domed building on the Connecticut River since 2002, a $47 million facility designed by Gwathmey Siegel & Associates. It is the sport's third home in Springfield since the Hall of Fame's 1959 founding, following an earlier facility at Springfield College and a second building that opened in 1985.

Budget the time

  • The museum is open daily, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to its own site.
  • The museum's own site lists admission at $34* for adults, $20* for youth ages 5 to 12, $25* for students ages 13 and up and $25* for seniors 65 and up, and adds that prices may vary based on ticket type.
  • Center Court, a full-size basketball court inside the museum, is open for visitors to play on.
  • The Hall has inducted 436 players, coaches, referees and other basketball figures as of 2024, with an honor ring displaying them inside the building.

Fees, seasons, water levels, algal advisories and ramp closures change without notice and belong to the agency that runs the water. A blank is something we did not confirm, not something the lake lacks. Never assume a lifeguard. Whether a beach is staffed turns on the season, the day, and which agency runs that particular beach — two beaches on one lake can differ.
