What to Know Before You Arrive

Bristol sits on a peninsula between Narragansett Bay to the west and Mount Hope Bay to the east, about 15 miles south of Providence and 20 miles north of Newport. It was settled in 1680 and incorporated in 1681 as part of Plymouth Colony, transferring to Rhode Island jurisdiction in 1747.

The town's Fourth of July committee describes its own event as “America's oldest continuous Fourth of July celebration” on its official history page, dating organized observances to 1785, when the Reverend Henry Wight, a Revolutionary War veteran, conducted the first Patriotic Exercises. A documented celebration predates even that: a British officer noted in July 1777 that the town marked the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with cannon fire. The modern celebration runs from Flag Day, June 14, through a 2.5-mile Military, Civic and Firemen's Parade on July 4th itself, with events scheduled throughout the weeks between.

Bristol's other defining institutions sit on the water. Blithewold, a 33-acre estate built by the Van Wickle family, holds a 45-room mansion and gardens described by the property itself as one of the most fully developed examples of the Country Place Era, now operating as a public museum and arboretum. The Herreshoff Manufacturing Company, based in Bristol, built five consecutive America's Cup-winning yacht defenders between 1893 and 1920 — a run now documented at the Herreshoff Marine Museum on the same waterfront.

The Road Trip Stop

The Fourth of July celebration is the event most associated with Bristol, run by a town committee that describes it, in its own official wording, as “America's oldest continuous Fourth of July celebration.” The modern schedule opens on Flag Day, June 14, and closes with a 2.5-mile Military, Civic and Firemen's Parade on July 4th. Outside that season, Blithewold's gardens and the Herreshoff Marine Museum are the town's year-round waterfront draws.

Plan the visit

  • If timing a visit to the parade, the route runs 2.5 miles through town on July 4th itself, with lead-up events scheduled from Flag Day (June 14) onward each year.
  • Blithewold's 33-acre grounds and 45-room mansion are open as a museum and arboretum; check the current hours and admission before visiting.
  • The Herreshoff Marine Museum documents the Bristol-built yachts that defended the America's Cup five consecutive times between 1893 and 1920.
  • Downtown's historic common is framed by the Walley School (1896), First Baptist Church (1814) and the Bristol County Statehouse/Courthouse (1816), a compact walk separate from the waterfront estates.

The Food Stop

In downtown Bristol, The Beehive Cafe at 10 Franklin Street describes itself as a cafe on the town's historic waterfront crafting breakfast and lunch dishes, and its own website asks visitors to check its Instagram page for special closures. We were unable to confirm other specific restaurants for this guide.

Rhode Island's regional food terms include coffee milk, the official state drink, and the “cabinet,” which the Rhode Island Secretary of State describes as coffee milk mixed with vanilla ice cream; on clam chowder, the state's Visit Rhode Island site says locals are divided between a clear, broth-based version and a creamy one.

Practical Road Trip Info

The Fourth of July celebration draws large crowds to a small town; traffic, parking and lodging fill up well ahead of the holiday period.

The Herreshoff Marine Museum is open May through December, Tuesday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m.; Blithewold's manor closes from late October to late November before reopening for the holiday season, while its gardens stay open.

Bristol's downtown, waterfront estates and Colt State Park are spread across the peninsula and are more practically reached by car than on foot between stops.

The parade route runs 2.5 miles through town on July 4th itself, closing streets along its path for the day.
