Albany/Cooperstown

One stop with two identities: a 300-year-old capital with a staircase full of hidden faces, and a lakeside village that became baseball's shrine on the strength of one letter.

What to Know Before You Arrive

Albany started as the Dutch outpost Fort Nassau in 1614, was renamed for the Duke of Albany when the English took over in 1664, and was formally chartered in 1686 — making it one of the oldest continuously chartered cities in the country. It became New York’s state capital in 1797 and has stayed the seat of state government ever since.

Seventy-five miles west, Cooperstown is a village of under 2,000 people that William Cooper founded in 1786; his son James Fenimore Cooper grew up there and later wrote The Last of the Mohicans. It would be a footnote in New York history if a single unverified letter in 1905 hadn’t convinced a commission that this was where baseball was invented, and a museum hadn’t been built on the strength of that story in 1939.

So this is one road-trip stop with two completely different personalities: a working capital with marble hallways and a legislature in session, and a lake village whose entire identity rests on a myth nobody can quite prove or fully let go of. They are two separate trips, and neither one explains the other.

03

The Road Trip Stop

The New York State Capitol took 32 years and three different architectural teams to finish, cost about $25 million by 1899 — the most expensive government building of its era — and still has no dome, one of only eleven state capitols in the country without one. Inside, the Great Western Staircase — the “Million Dollar Staircase” — has 444 steps and 78 famous faces carved into its red sandstone, according to the Empire State Plaza's own guide; outside, a separate 166-foot Eastern Staircase was added to stop the building shifting downhill toward State Street.

Budget the time

  • Forty-five minutes covers a guided tour of the legislative chambers and the Million Dollar Staircase; add time to just stand and look for faces.
  • Free weekday tours run out of the information desk in the Capitol’s State Street Lobby; the Capitol lists walk-in tours at 10:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., with no reservation required for individuals or parties of fewer than 10.
  • Pair it with the Corning Tower observation deck next door at Empire State Plaza — free, 42 stories up, and the best skyline view in the Capital Region.
  • The Legislature meets only on scheduled session days; the Assembly’s 2026 calendar lists them from January 7 through June 4, and the Capitol is open Monday through Friday and closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Neighborhoods

Capitol Hill / Downtown Albany
The government core, marble buildings and wide plazas by day, quiet once the state workforce clears out at 5 p.m.

Lark Street
Albany’s arts strip, nineteenth-century brownstones turned into galleries, and a genuine international restaurant row — Thai, Greek, Indian, Tex-Mex — that punches well above the neighborhood’s size.

Center Square
A dense grid of historic rowhouses just below the Capitol, Albany’s oldest intact residential neighborhood and an easy walk from everything downtown.

Cooperstown Village
A few blocks of pre-1900s brick and clapboard around Main Street, small enough to walk end to end, with the Hall of Fame at one end and Otsego Lake at the other.

Hidden Gems

▣

USS Slater

A World War II destroyer escort, transferred to the Greek navy in 1951 and renamed Aetos, now a museum ship moored on the Hudson River in Albany; the museum lists hours of Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with November 29 as the last day for regular tours this season.

▣

The Egg

A brutalist, egg-shaped performance hall at Empire State Plaza, completed in 1978 and left with its raw concrete fully exposed rather than clad in stone like the buildings around it.

▣

Corning Tower Observation Deck

Free access to the 42nd floor of the tallest building in the Capital Region, with views that stretch well past the city on a clear day.

▣

Fenimore Art Museum, Cooperstown

American folk art and one of the country’s major Native American art collections, the Thaw Collection, housed on land that was once James Fenimore Cooper’s family farm.

06

The Food Stop

Jack’s Oyster House has been an Albany institution since 1913, founded by Jack Rosenstein — a former oyster shucker who, as the story goes, hated oysters — and it’s been feeding the Capital Region’s politicians and visitors from the same State Street corner since 1937.

The wider Capital Region likes to claim two American food origin stories: the story told locally is that the potato chip was invented at Saratoga’s Moon’s Lake House in 1854, and that the club sandwich began at Saratoga’s Canfield Casino in 1894. Neither claim is airtight, but both restaurants are long gone, so the legend is what’s left to argue about.

The Home Teams

Albany Great Danes

NCAA Division I, America East Conference
University at Albany, SUNY

Best known for the 2005–06 men’s basketball team that nearly upset top-seeded UConn as a 16 seed, and for lacrosse star Lyle Thompson, a two-time Tewaaraton Trophy winner who left as Division I’s all-time points and assists leader.

The Albany FireWolves lacrosse club of the National Lacrosse League relocated to Oshawa, Ontario, beginning with the 2025–26 season. College sports at UAlbany and Siena carry the local sports energy instead: the University at Albany lists 19 NCAA Division I teams and Siena College a 21-sport Division I program.

*Check before you go. Every lake here links to the official page we checked it against. Fees, seasons, water levels, algal advisories and ramp closures change without notice and belong to the agency that runs the water. A blank is something we did not confirm, not something the lake lacks. Never assume a lifeguard. Whether a beach is staffed turns on the season, the day, and which agency runs that particular beach — two beaches on one lake can differ. If that matters to your family, confirm it with the agency before you set out.

Practical Road Trip Info

Budget one full day for Albany — the Capitol, Empire State Plaza and Lark Street — and a second day if Cooperstown or Saratoga is part of the plan.

Late spring through fall is the stretch when snow is rare in downtown Albany: the National Weather Service’s 1991–2020 normals for Albany average 0.1 inch of snow in May and 0.3 inch in October, against 42.6 inches across December through February and 59.2 inches for the year.

Capitol tours are free, and group tours are limited in size: tours for groups of 10 or more are capped at 40 people and need a reservation at least two weeks ahead, and a group that turns up during walk-in times may not be accommodated.

We were unable to confirm which days are busiest at the Hall of Fame and Howe Caverns. The Hall lists extended hours from Memorial Day weekend through the day before Labor Day, and Howe Caverns says its traditional tour must be booked online.
