What to Know Before You Arrive
European settlement in Salem began in 1626, and the city grew into one of early America's most significant seaports, a history documented today at Salem Maritime National Historical Park, redesignated from a National Historic Site in July 2025. The Peabody Essex Museum traces back to the East India Marine Society, founded in 1799 by Salem sea captains, and is now one of the oldest continuously operating museums in the country, with major collections of Asian art.
Salem is most widely known for the witch trials of 1692 and 1693, and the city's identity is shaped by that history. Court proceedings that winter and spring led to accusations against more than 200 people; thirty were found guilty and nineteen were put to death, with at least one more person dying in custody during the proceedings. The Massachusetts legislature has formally exonerated those convicted in stages over the centuries, most recently clearing the last remaining name, Elizabeth Johnson Jr., 329 years after the trials. A memorial park dedicated in Salem in 1992, on the trials' 300th anniversary, sets a stone slab bench into its wall for each of the victims; a second memorial was dedicated in 2017 at Proctor's Ledge, a site archaeologists identified in 2016.
That history has shaped how the city markets itself, and not everyone agrees on the approach. Salem promotes itself in places as “The Witch City,” with a street named “Witch Way,” while other residents have argued the city should lean less on witch-related tourism and more on its museums and maritime history.
The Road Trip Stop
The Peabody Essex Museum traces its roots to 1799, when a group of Salem sea captains founded the East India Marine Society, and it's counted among the oldest continuously operating museums in the United States. Its collections include one of the country's major holdings of Asian art, built in part from objects the founding captains collected on their voyages.
Budget the time
- The museum suggests at least two hours for a visit, across three floors and 25 galleries, with the time depending on which galleries and any current special exhibitions are open.
- The museum is open Thursday through Monday, 10 am-5 pm, and lists adult admission at $25*, with reduced rates for seniors and students and free admission for Salem residents and ages 15 and under; the museum's own site has current hours and admission.
- Pair it with a walk to the House of the Seven Gables, a short distance away on the waterfront.
- October is Salem's busiest month by a wide margin, and several attractions, including the House of the Seven Gables, charge higher admission that month than the rest of the year.

Practical Road Trip Info
Half a day covers the Peabody Essex Museum and a walk through downtown; a full day allows time for the House of the Seven Gables and the waterfront as well.
October brings the largest crowds of the year to Salem by a significant margin, and several attractions raise their admission prices for the month; parking downtown becomes noticeably harder to find.
September can be a quieter visit than October: the official Salem tourism site says museums, attractions, shops and restaurants with longer waits in October may have more availability in September, especially earlier in the month or mid-week. The House of the Seven Gables lists its lower November-to-September admission rates for September and higher rates for October, and the Peabody Essex Museum says parking is extremely limited in both September and October.
The Salem Ferry runs a high-speed passenger route to and from Boston from May through October, an alternative to driving for a Boston-Salem day trip.
