What to Know Before You Arrive

Portland is Maine's most populous city, with 68,408 residents at the 2020 census and a metro area of about 550,000, the largest in the state. The Portland peninsula was known to the Eastern Abenaki as Machigonne; it was later settled as the fishing village of Casco, renamed Falmouth in 1658, burned during King Philip's War in 1676 and again in 1690, and burned once more by the Royal Navy in 1775 during the Revolution. The surviving section incorporated separately as Portland in 1786, and the city's seal depicts a phoenix rising from ashes, a reference to its recovery from four devastating fires over its history. Portland was Maine's first state capital from 1820 until the capital moved to Augusta in 1832.

The Old Port, on the southeastern side of the peninsula, is known for its cobblestone streets, preserved 19th-century brick buildings and working fishing piers, and much of it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Portland Waterfront Historic District. The Port of Portland was the second-largest tonnage seaport in New England as of 2019, continuing a commercial shipping history that dates back to the city's founding.

Portland Head Light, completed in 1791 at the directive of George Washington, was the first lighthouse built by the U.S. government and is the oldest lighthouse in Maine; despite its name, it has always stood in the town of Cape Elizabeth, not Portland. The city's food scene has drawn recent national recognition: in 2024, the James Beard Foundation named ZU Bakery, in Portland's West End, its Outstanding Bakery award winner.

The Road Trip Stop

The Old Port is Portland's historic waterfront district, its cobblestone streets and 19th-century brick buildings holding boutiques, restaurants and bars along Commercial Street. Much of the district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Portland Waterfront Historic District, and the Eastern Promenade Trail runs along its edge.

Budget the time

  • We were unable to confirm how long the Old Port's core streets take to walk, and the time depends on stops at shops and restaurants.
  • Post Office Park and Tommy's Park, two small public squares at Middle and Exchange Streets, anchor the district and include the city's visitor-information booth.
  • The Casco Bay Ferry Terminal is within walking distance, for a trip out to the islands of Casco Bay.
  • Portland Head Light, in neighboring Cape Elizabeth, is a separate short drive and not part of the Old Port itself.

Practical Road Trip Info

A half day covers the Old Port on foot; a full day allows time for Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth or a Casco Bay Ferry trip as well.

Portland Head Light sits in Cape Elizabeth, a separate town from Portland, a short drive rather than a walk from downtown.

The Casco Bay Ferry's schedule runs more frequently in summer and less often in winter, according to its own operating history.

The Old Port's streets are cobblestone in places, worth noting for strollers or mobility devices.
