What to Know Before You Arrive

Hartford is the capital of Connecticut, with a 2025 population estimate of 124,006, founded in 1635 — among the oldest cities in the United States. The settlement traces to Puritan leaders Thomas Hooker and Samuel Stone, who led 100 settlers with 130 head of cattle overland from Massachusetts. Bushnell Park, below the State Capitol, was approved by Hartford voters on January 5, 1854, and its own history describes it as the first municipal park in the nation conceived, built and paid for by citizens through a popular vote. The park's namesake, Reverend Horace Bushnell, first asked his friend and fellow Hartford native Frederick Law Olmsted to design it; Olmsted was occupied with Central Park and Springfield's Forest Park at the time and declined.

The insurance industry is the reason Hartford's skyline looks the way it does. The city is nicknamed the Insurance Capital of the World and, less formally, America's filing cabinet, and it holds high status as a global city for the concentration of insurer headquarters based there, including Aetna, Travelers and Hartford Steam Boiler. Aetna traces to 1853, when its Annuity department separated from Aetna Fire Insurance Company of Hartford; in 2017, after CVS Health's acquisition was announced, the company's earlier plan to relocate its headquarters to New York City was scrapped and Hartford stayed the headquarters city.

Two of Hartford's cultural landmarks are the Mark Twain House, on Farmington Avenue, and the Wadsworth Atheneum, at 600 Main Street; the Twain House's own directions page says CT Transit buses 60, 62, 64 and 66 connect it with downtown Hartford. The Twain House, built in 1874 in the Victorian Gothic style — one biographer described it as “part steamboat, part medieval fortress and part cuckoo clock” — was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1962. The Wadsworth Atheneum, founded in 1842 and opened in 1844 on the site of founder Daniel Wadsworth's family home, describes itself on its own site as “the oldest continually operating public art museum in the United States.”

03

The Road Trip Stop

The Mark Twain House is where Samuel Clemens lived from 1874 to 1891 and wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Prince and the Pauper, Life on the Mississippi, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, A Tramp Abroad and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. The house is Victorian Gothic, built in 1874, and operates today as a guided-tour-only museum; a 2003 visitors' center holds 50,000 artifacts including manuscripts, historic photographs, family furnishings and Tiffany glass.

What the visit involves

  • The house is guided-tour only, with two kinds of tour offered each day, a general house tour and a living history tour, according to the museum's own site; the museum says tours sell out days ahead and recommends buying tickets in advance.
  • The visitors' center holds 50,000 artifacts, separate from the house tour itself — manuscripts, photographs, family furnishings and Tiffany glass pieces.
  • The Wadsworth Atheneum is at 600 Main Street, and the Twain House's own directions page says CT Transit buses connect the house with downtown Hartford, making the two museums a same-day pairing.
  • Both sites are National Historic Landmarks — the Twain House since 1962, the Connecticut State Capitol nearby since 1971 — and both have public tour access on weekdays.

The Food Stop

Two Hartford neighborhoods are tied to the city's Italian-American and Puerto Rican communities: the South End near Franklin Avenue, where Hartford's “Little Italy” moved after the Front Street neighborhood was demolished beginning in 1958, and Park Street in Frog Hollow, which has been called “New England's Spanish Main Street” because of its predominantly Puerto Rican population and merchants.
