What to Know Before You Arrive

Providence sits at the head of Narragansett Bay, where the Providence, Moshassuck and Woonasquatucket Rivers meet downtown. Roger Williams established the settlement in 1636 after his banishment from Massachusetts. The city sits at roughly the midpoint of the Boston–New York corridor, about 50 miles from Boston.

WaterFire began as a single-night art installation in 1994, when artist Barnaby Evans created First Fire as a commission for the tenth anniversary of First Night Providence. He staged a second installation, Second Fire, in 1996, and supporters then organized it into an ongoing nonprofit. Full lightings — roughly 100 bonfires set just above the water's surface along the downtown rivers, accompanied by music — have run in past seasons from April to December, with the current year's schedule posted on the WaterFire website ahead of each season.

College Hill, across the river from downtown, holds Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) among eight institutions of higher learning in the city. The RISD Museum, on the same hill, holds the 20th-largest museum collection in the United States. The hill is also home to the First Baptist Church, founded in 1638, the Old State House, and what is described as the largest contiguous National Register historic district in the country. Federal Hill, west of downtown, is the city's historic Italian-American neighborhood; 14% of the city's residents report Italian ancestry.

03

The Road Trip Stop

WaterFire is the installation most associated with Providence: roughly 100 bonfires burning just above the surface of the three downtown rivers, accompanied by classical and world music, on scheduled lighting nights through the season. Full lightings have historically run from April through December, with the exact dates published on WaterFire's own site ahead of each season; the schedule varies year to year.

Plan around the schedule

  • Check the current year's lighting schedule before planning a visit around it. WaterFire does not run every night — only on scheduled lighting dates, which the organization posts on its own site each season.
  • The installation runs along the three downtown rivers, viewable on foot from multiple bridges and riverside walkways without a ticket.
  • College Hill and Federal Hill sit on opposite sides of downtown — a full walk between them, including a stop at each, takes a half-day at a walking pace.
  • The RISD Museum and Brown University's campus are both on College Hill and can be combined with a walk through the historic district around them.

The Food Stop

Federal Hill is the city's historic Italian-American neighborhood; Providence's visitor bureau describes it as the city's authentic Little Italy, spanning Atwells Avenue, with countless Italian restaurants on the avenue and specialty food and wine shops.

Rhode Island has its own regional food terms — coffee milk is the official state drink (adopted in 1993), and the state describes the “cabinet” as a classic Rhode Island drink made by mixing coffee milk and vanilla ice cream; the Dictionary of American Regional English defines a cabinet as a fountain drink made with milk, ice cream and flavoring, a milkshake.

Practical Road Trip Info

WaterFire lightings occur on a published schedule, not continuously through the season — check the current calendar before planning a trip around the installation.

College Hill's historic district and Federal Hill are on opposite sides of downtown, connected by a walkable but hilly route.

The city sits roughly equidistant from Boston and New York, making it a stop that fits into a route between the two.

The RISD Museum on College Hill posts weekly hours (Tuesday through Sunday, with a Thursday afternoon and evening session) and a short list of holiday closures rather than an academic-year schedule; Brown's David Winton Bell Gallery says it is closed for facility improvements and renovations and expects to welcome guests back in fall 2027. Check each site for current hours.
