What to Know Before You Arrive
The bridge is the reason to stop, and the port is the reason for the bridge. The Port of Duluth is the largest and busiest port on the Great Lakes and the world's farthest inland port that can take an oceangoing ship. The Aerial Lift Bridge sits at the mouth of the Duluth Ship Canal, next to Canal Park, and its lift span rises 135 feet in about a minute so a freighter or an ocean-going saltie can pass beneath. Standing on the lakewalk when the bridge goes up and a 1,000-foot bulk carrier slides through is what most first-time visitors remember.
Duluth is Minnesota's fifth-largest city, on the west end of Lake Superior, with a topography that surprises people who haven't been. There's roughly 820 feet of elevation gain from the lakeside airport to the hilltop airport, which is why so many neighborhood streets run steeply down toward the water. Winters here are severe — the city normally sees maximum temperatures at or below 32°F for 100 days a year. Summer is short, spectacular and the reason for most visits.
Canal Park was warehouses before the tourism era. Waterfront storage buildings on the harbor side of downtown got renovated into shops, restaurants and hotels through the 1980s and 90s, and the district works today because it kept the brick shells and the bridge view. Grandma's Marathon (26.2 miles, on the third Saturday in June) runs point-to-point from just south of Two Harbors down Scenic Route 61 into Duluth, finishing in Canal Park — the race and the district grew up together.
The Road Trip Stop
The Aerial Lift Bridge and Canal Park are one visit, and everything else in town is a five-minute drive from that starting point. Time the visit around a ship arrival if you can — the bridge rises to its full 135-foot height in about a minute, is raised roughly 5,000 times a year, and the customary horn-blowing sequence between ship and bridge is what turns it from a piece of infrastructure into a scheduled event. Walk out onto the concrete pier from Canal Park to see the ship come through, or up onto the Lakewalk for the wider harbor view. The Great Lakes Aquarium is a two-block walk from the bridge, open daily 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with admission $20* for adults, $19* for ages 62 and over and $16* for ages 3 to 17; the aquarium notes that online tickets are unavailable, so admission is bought at the front desk, and the paved Lakewalk runs east along the lakeshore for miles.
Budget the time
- Check the ‘boat schedule’ before you go — Visit Duluth points to the Harbor Lookout website for a list of daily arrivals and departures, and says nearly 900 vessels pass under the bridge each year.
- Two hours covers the bridge, the Canal Park pier and the Maritime Visitor Center at the pier's base. Extra half day for the Aquarium and the Lakewalk east.
- Enger Tower on the hill stands in Enger Park, about 2 miles west of the bridge in a straight line: a five-story blue stone tower dedicated in 1939, with panoramic views of the Twin Ports according to the city. Visit Duluth lists climbing it among the free things to do. The park gate and tower doors close each fall when the snow arrives and open May 1.
- Lake conditions change quickly. Visit Duluth says conditions around Duluth and Lake Superior can change quickly because of lake-effect weather and shifting winds, and its Know Before You Go page lists weather alerts and road and trail conditions to check before a visit.

Neighborhoods
Canal Park
The renovated waterfront warehouse district at the mouth of the Duluth Ship Canal; shops, restaurants, hotels, the Great Lakes Aquarium and the base of the Lakewalk are all here.
Downtown & Superior Street
The historic downtown grid up the hill from Canal Park, with old office buildings, the Depot arts center, and the connected DECC/Amsoil Arena/Symphony Hall complex on the waterfront edge.
Lincoln Park & the Craft District
Between downtown and West Duluth, with restaurants clustered on West Superior Street. Visit Duluth describes the neighborhood, also known as the Lincoln Park Craft District, as part residential and part industrial, with makers sitting alongside independent breweries.
Park Point (Minnesota Point)
The narrow 7-mile sand spit running from the Aerial Lift Bridge across the harbor entrance — one of the longest freshwater sand spits anywhere, with beaches on the Lake Superior side and residential streets on the harbor side.
The Food Stop
Canal Park is the walk-out-your-hotel-door food scene: several sit-down restaurants and coffee shops within a two-block walk of the bridge. Visit Duluth’s Food & Drink directory lists restaurants, coffee shops, breweries and bars across the city and mentions waterfront views in Canal Park.
For a specifically Duluth thing, Visit Duluth points to the Lincoln Park Craft District, which it places two miles from Canal Park. Ursa Minor Brewing, at 2415 W Superior St, describes its taproom as part of the district, and Bent Paddle Brewing runs a taproom in Lincoln Park.

Day Trips
| Destination | Time | Distance | How we got it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Split Rock Lighthouse | 1 hr 10 min | 48 mi | routed |
| About an hour up the North Shore in Silver Bay: the 1910 lighthouse on a 133-foot cliff above Lake Superior, National Historic Landmark since 2011. Every November 10 the light is lit in memory of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank on that date in 1975. | |||
| Gooseberry Falls State Park | 59 min | 41 mi | routed |
| Just before Split Rock: the Upper, Middle and Lower Falls of the Gooseberry River, with easy short trails between them. | |||
| Two Harbors | 39 min | 28 mi | routed |
| About 26 miles north-east of the Aerial Lift Bridge in a straight line: Two Harbors, where Grandma’s Marathon says its start line is just south of town. The Two Harbors lighthouse has guided ships into Agate Bay since 1892, and its operator, the Lake County Historical Society, says the light remains a private aid to navigation. The society lists the Light Station as open daily, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. | |||
| Grand Marais & the Gunflint Trail | 2 hr 30 min | 111 mi | routed |
| About 106 miles north-east of the Aerial Lift Bridge in a straight line: Visit Cook County describes Grand Marais as an “artsy and quirky” North Shore harbor village. It also describes the Gunflint Trail, once a route for moving goods down to the port of Grand Marais, as a 57-mile paved National Scenic Byway at the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness; the county says Boundary Waters canoe outfitters provide rental gear. | |||

This is a list of what is near you, not a recommendation of any of it. 1 of these carries an accreditation we confirmed against the accrediting body’s own register. Where there is no badge we did not confirm one — that is not a judgement on the place, and a good many municipal, state and university sites belong to no register we check. One entry is marked with an asterisk: we could not confirm part of what is listed, and the note under it says which part. Opening times, prices and seasons change without notice, so check the operator’s own site — every name above links to it.
Practical Road Trip Info
Two days is the minimum for Duluth plus a Split Rock day trip; three lets you get up to Grand Marais without racing.
Best season is late June through early October. Duluth summers are short and often the best few weeks of the year on Lake Superior; October gets the leaf color. Winters are 100 days at or below freezing, and the North Shore roads get real weather.
Aerial Lift Bridge lifts are free to watch; the Great Lakes Aquarium, Glensheen, Split Rock and the William A. Irvin all charge admission. Glensheen, Split Rock and the William A. Irvin each publish ticket prices on their own sites; the Great Lakes Aquarium’s ticket page could not be read for this guide, so check its site for current prices before you go.
Parking around Canal Park includes metered street spaces, pay lots and ramps, per Visit Duluth, which points to the Park Duluth mobile app for payment. The DECC’s parking page says public lots around Canal Park and downtown charge various amounts between $1/hour* and $10/day*, and that several Canal Park lots are reserved for private patrons.

The Local Debate
Family-Friendly
Aerial Lift Bridge lift
Watching a ship come through the Ship Canal is the great free thing to do in the city — the bridge goes up in about a minute, the ship blows a horn, and everyone on the pier watches. Time it if you can.
Great Lakes Aquarium
A not-for-profit aquarium at 353 Harbor Drive on the Duluth waterfront; Visit Duluth says it features animals and habitats found within the Great Lakes basin and other freshwater ecosystems such as the Amazon River. Visit Duluth’s transportation guide says the Skywalk’s Northwest Passage links downtown hotels and parking ramps to the aquarium. A suggested visit length could not be confirmed; check the aquarium’s own site for hours and tickets.
SS William A. Irvin tour
Station-to-station tour, at your own pace, of a 610-foot Great Lakes ore freighter docked in Canal Park, according to the DECC; tours last 45 to 60 minutes. The DECC says the ship’s engine room brass and guest quarters are intact, and its history page mentions a 2,000 horsepower steam turbine engine. The ship has many stairs and no elevators, and the ticket page lists a family rate.
Park Point beach
The lakeside stretch of the 7-mile Minnesota Point sand spit. Visit Duluth describes Park Point Beach as gentle sand for swimming, says Duluth’s official beach season is brief, and says the lake rarely gets above 55°F in the deep water, though the shallow sands of Park Point can warm up in late summer.
