The Northwest Angle, a part of Minnesota north of the 49th parallel, traces to a mistake in the 1783 Treaty of Paris, which relied on a map that showed the Mississippi extending far to the north. The state's own budget office says the Angle can be reached by air, water or ice across Lake of the Woods, or by land through Canada.
