Little Rock

The high school where the Little Rock Nine walked past a wall of paratroopers, a presidential library cantilevered over the river, and a fight over who really invented cheese dip.

What to Know Before You Arrive

Long before Arkansas was a state, French explorer Jean-Baptiste Bénard de la Harpe canoed past a small rock outcropping on the south bank of the Arkansas River in 1722 and marked it on his maps as la petite roche — the little rock. The name outlasted the rock itself, most of which later development swallowed. The city was founded in 1821 as the capital of the brand-new Arkansas Territory, and it has been the seat of state government ever since, which is a big part of why so much of Little Rock's story runs through its government buildings rather than its factories.

Little Rock's most important history happened over three weeks in September 1957, and it deserves the real story, not a summary. Nine Black students — Ernest Green, Elizabeth Eckford, Jefferson Thomas, Terrence Roberts, Carlotta Walls LaNier, Minnijean Brown, Gloria Ray Karlmark, Thelma Mothershed, and Melba Pattillo Beals — had been chosen to integrate all-white Central High School under the Supreme Court's 1954 Brown v. Board of Education ruling. On September 4, Governor Orval Faubus sent the Arkansas National Guard to block them; Elizabeth Eckford, who didn't get word of a last-minute change in plans, arrived alone that morning and was turned away in front of a hostile crowd. Three weeks of legal maneuvering followed. On September 23, President Eisenhower signed Executive Order 10730, taking the Arkansas Guard out of Faubus's control and putting it under federal command; the next day he ordered the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division into the city. On September 25, soldiers of the 101st escorted all nine students inside, and they attended a full day of classes for the first time. Daisy Bates, president of the Arkansas NAACP, had spent that entire month coordinating the students, their families, and the press, largely from her own living room. The school year that followed was harder than the walk through the door — the nine faced ongoing harassment inside the building — and in the fall of 1958 Faubus shut down every public high school in Little Rock for a full year rather than let integration continue. Schools reopened in August 1959. In 1999, President Clinton awarded all nine of them the Congressional Gold Medal. Central High is still a working public high school today, and the building and the ground around it are a National Historic Site.

The rest of Little Rock's identity got built more quietly. The River Market District downtown, once a stretch of aging warehouses, is now where a farmers market hall, the Museum of Discovery, and a run of restaurants sit a short walk from the Clinton Presidential Center, dedicated in 2004 on the riverfront. Home-state pride runs deep enough here that Arkansans will still argue, on purpose, about which restaurant invented cheese dip.

03

The Road Trip Stop

Central High is still an operating public high school, so you can't walk its halls — but the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site across the street exists to tell you exactly what happened here. Congress created the site in 1998, and the National Park Service visitor center, which opened in 2006, runs an interpretive film and exhibits on the 1957 crisis and the wider civil rights movement. A Commemorative Garden nearby holds nine trees, one for each of the Little Rock Nine, alongside a preserved 1957-era Mobil gas station that served as the media's de facto headquarters during the crisis. This isn't a stop built for a quick photo. Go in expecting to spend real time, and to leave a little quieter than you arrived.

Budget the time

  • The park directs visitors to begin at the visitor center, diagonally across from the school. It holds detailed exhibits on the 1957 desegregation crisis, and the park says a new interpretive film is available on request.
  • The school building and the old gas station are both closed to the public; you view them from outside. The Commemorative Garden itself is open to walk through daily, 7 a.m. to sunset.
  • Ranger-led programs run by reservation only. The park offers them Tuesday through Saturday at 1:00 p.m., subject to availability. A confirmed reservation made in advance is required, the park recommends calling at least two months ahead, and each program is limited to 50 participants. The programs are free and do not go inside the school.
  • Read the street sign on your way in. The road along the site, Daisy L. Gatson Bates Drive, is named for the NAACP leader who guided the nine students through that fall — worth knowing whose name you're standing on.

Neighborhoods

River Market District
Downtown's revived warehouse district, anchored by an indoor farmers market hall and the Museum of Discovery, with restaurants and bars spilling toward the Arkansas River and the Clinton Presidential Center.

Quapaw Quarter
Little Rock's oldest ground, named for the Quapaw people in 1961 and covering as many as fifteen National Register historic districts — Victorian mansions, the Governor's Mansion, and General Douglas MacArthur's birthplace all sit inside its loose boundaries.

Hillcrest
A walkable, streetcar-era neighborhood northwest of downtown, built around Kavanaugh Boulevard's shops, bars, and restaurants.

MacArthur Park Historic District
A shaded downtown park wrapped around the 1840s Little Rock Arsenal, where the Tower Building — now a military history museum — shares the grounds with some of the city's oldest surviving houses.

Hidden Gems

▣

Old State House Museum

Arkansas's first state capitol, completed in 1842 and now considered the oldest surviving state capitol building west of the Mississippi River. Bill Clinton announced his run for president from its front steps in 1991 and gave his election-night victory speeches there in 1992 and 1996.

▣

MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History

Housed in the 1840s Tower Building of the old Little Rock Arsenal — the room upstairs is where General Douglas MacArthur was born in 1880, while his father commanded the post. The museum itself covers Arkansas's military history from the Civil War onward.

▣

Big Dam Bridge

At 4,226 feet, billed as the longest pedestrian-and-bicycle bridge in North America never built for trains or cars, arcing over the Arkansas River and the Murray Lock and Dam between Little Rock and North Little Rock. Walk or bike it for the view alone.

▣

The Old Mill

A faux-rustic 1930s recreation of a water-powered gristmill just across the river in North Little Rock, dressed up with decorative concrete made to look like wood. Its claim to fame: it appears in the opening scenes of Gone with the Wind.

06

The Food Stop

Lassis Inn has been frying catfish since around 1905, making it one of the oldest Black-owned restaurants still open in Little Rock. During the civil rights years it was a regular gathering spot for Daisy Bates and other organizers working the Central High case. The James Beard Foundation named it an America's Classic in 2020. Order the catfish, or the local specialty: fried “fish ribs” cut from buffalo fish.

The bigger fight is over Arkansas’s other signature dish, warm cheese dip — more on that below. For something fast and casual downtown, the River Market District’s own site describes Ottenheimer Market Hall as a year-round, indoor market of owner-operated shops and stalls, with everything from barbecue to sweet delights to tacos and pot stickers. The Little Rock Farmers Market is separate: it meets in the district’s two outdoor pavilions, and its 2026 season has concluded.

Jack Stephens Center · University of Arkansas at Little Rock

Home basketball at the 5,600-seat Jack Stephens Center on the UA Little Rock campus. The 1986 team is still talked about for a first-round NCAA tournament upset of third-seeded Notre Dame.

Little Rock has no NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, or MLS team, and even its best-known minor-league club plays across the river: the Arkansas Travelers, the Seattle Mariners' Double-A affiliate, take the field at Dickey–Stephens Park in North Little Rock, not Little Rock proper. It's a five-minute drive over the bridge, where summer tickets run cheap.

Practical Road Trip Info

The park suggests a half day at Central High alone. The National Park Service says its staff suggest spending a half day at the site. The Clinton Presidential Center sits east of the River Market District, and the district's own site describes the Clinton Presidential Library as within walking distance. We were unable to confirm the driving distance between the Central High site and downtown.

Seasons. Summers run hot and humid, regularly into the 90s, and the city's record high is 114°F, set in August 2011. Winters are mild rather than cold: the Encyclopedia of Arkansas puts Little Rock's winter highs close to 50°F, and the National Park Service lists average seasonal temperatures at the Central High site of 62°F in spring, 80°F in summer, 63°F in fall and 43°F in winter. The main winter hazard is ice rather than heavy snow: the Encyclopedia says minor ice accumulations happen somewhere in the state almost every winter, with major ice storms every five to ten years, and the park notes that winter snow events tend to turn quickly to thin ice.

The Central High visitor center is free; the Clinton Presidential Center charges admission. The National Park Service lists no charge to enter the visitor center or walk the grounds. The visitor center is closed Sunday and Monday, and its hours vary by season; the park's basic information page lists Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Clinton Center lists adult admission (ages 18 to 61) at $12*, with other rates on its site, and is open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Both list closures on New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

Downtown parking combines on-street meters with off-street options. The city lists parking meters as operating 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, with free parking on Saturdays, Sundays and listed holidays. The River Market District’s site lists public parking in the River Market deck at 2nd Street and River Market Avenue, plus surface lots and on-street spaces. The Clinton Presidential Library says parking is free for museum visitors, and the Central High visitor center has a free lot.

One public campground within 25 miles of Little Rock, and it takes reservations. Public campgrounds run by federal agencies. State-park and private campgrounds are not included.
