What to Know Before You Arrive

Branson sits in the Ozark Mountains, primarily in Taney County with a small portion in Stone County, about 50 miles south of Springfield, Missouri via U.S. Route 65 and roughly 200 miles south of St. Louis. The town's transformation into a live-entertainment destination began in the late 1950s, and the Mabe Brothers' band, started in 1961, is credited as Branson's first music show.

The entertainment boom accelerated through the early 1990s: a 1991 60 Minutes segment called Branson the “live music capital of the entire universe,” and celebrity-owned venues followed, including Andy Williams's Moon River Theatre (1992) and Glen Campbell's theater (1994). Branson now has more than 50 theaters, most along 76 Country Boulevard, and markets itself as the “Live Entertainment Capital of the World.”

Table Rock Dam, completed in 1959, created Table Rock Lake, which became central to Branson's appeal for boating and waterfront recreation. The Herschend family leased Marvel Cave in 1950 and in 1960 opened Silver Dollar City, a recreated frontier town with period structures and historical reenactments, next to the cave.

03

The Road Trip Stop

Silver Dollar City is the anchor theme park of a Branson visit: a recreated 1880s frontier town built by the Herschend family in 1960 next to Marvel Cave, which they had leased a decade earlier. The park combines period-appropriate structures and historical reenactments with modern rides. The park’s tickets page lists a one-day ticket from $85* on select days when bought online 24 hours in advance, or $95* for a ticket valid for one operating day through Jan. 2, 2027, before tax; ages 3 and under are free, and the page asks visitors to check the park’s calendar to confirm operating hours for the date of a visit.

Plan the visit

  • 76 Country Boulevard is the theater corridor, holding most of Branson's more than 50 venues; show schedules and lineups change seasonally.
  • Silver Dollar City admission pricing should be confirmed on the park's own site before visiting; it could not be verified this session.
  • Table Rock Lake offers boating and waterfront activities separate from the theater district and theme park.
  • Marvel Cave sits beneath Silver Dollar City and is included with park admission as part of the original attraction the Herschends leased in 1950.

*Fees subject to change, please check silverdollarcity.com for updated information.

The City of Branson’s news release on its Historic Downtown streetscape project calls the area the city’s central district, home to the Branson Convention Center, Branson Landing and the Lake Taneycomo waterfront, and describes it as bordered by water on three sides and Branson’s entertainment district on the fourth. Explore Branson says a free downtown trolley runs between Historic Downtown and Branson Landing daily from March through December, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., except Thanksgiving and Christmas.

*Check before you go. Every lake here links to the official page we checked it against. 2 of these state a price we read off that page on the date we checked. Fees, seasons, water levels, algal advisories and ramp closures change without notice and belong to the agency that runs the water. A blank is something we did not confirm, not something the lake lacks. Never assume a lifeguard. Whether a beach is staffed turns on the season, the day, and which agency runs that particular beach — two beaches on one lake can differ. If that matters to your family, confirm it with the agency before you set out.
