What to Know Before You Arrive

Tulsa sits on the Arkansas River in northeastern Oklahoma's “Green Country” region, about 100 miles northeast of Oklahoma City. It had 413,066 residents in 2020, making it Oklahoma's second-largest city. Downtown holds one of the nation's largest concentrations of art deco architecture, a legacy of the early 20th-century oil boom, when the city's energy-industry success funded construction booms in the style — the Philcade Building, Boston Avenue Methodist Church, Will Rogers High School and Tulsa Union Depot are among the notable structures.

The Gathering Place, created by the George Kaiser Family Foundation and opened September 8, 2018, spans 66.5 acres and represents the largest private gift to a community park in U.S. history at $465 million. It includes the 5-acre Chapman Adventure Playground, Williams Lodge, the ONEOK Boathouse, the QuikTrip Great Lawn, sports courts, a BMX pump track and skate park, and Peggy's Pond. The Discovery Lab, a 50,000-square-foot family museum with interactive exhibits and a 300-seat amphitheater, opened on the grounds January 24, 2022. Park officials had projected a million annual visitors; more than 3 million came in the first year.

In 1925, Tulsa businessman Cyrus Avery established the U.S. Highway 66 Association in the city, earning Tulsa the nickname “Birthplace of Route 66,” and historic Route 66 signage remains visible throughout the city. Greenwood, once known as “Black Wall Street,” was one of America's most prosperous Black communities in the early 20th century; visitors can learn its history today at Greenwood Rising, a history center dedicated to preserving and sharing the community's story. Greenwood Rising's own site carries the complete history.

The Road Trip Stop

The Gathering Place is the anchor of a Tulsa visit: a 66.5-acre park on the Arkansas River, opened in 2018 as the largest private gift to a community park in U.S. history. Its grounds hold a 5-acre adventure playground, a boathouse, a great lawn, sports courts, a BMX pump track and skate park, and Peggy's Pond, along with the Discovery Lab family museum added in 2022.

Plan the visit

  • The Gathering Place is large enough to fill a half-day or more; its scale (66.5 acres with multiple distinct feature areas) means a single short stop won't cover the whole park.
  • Greenwood Rising requires reserved tickets in advance; check current admission pricing and the “Freedom Fridays” free-admission program on the center's own site.
  • Downtown's art deco buildings can be seen on a self-guided walk, including the Philcade Building, Boston Avenue Methodist Church, Will Rogers High School and Tulsa Union Depot.
  • Route 66 signage is visible throughout the city, tracing back to the 1925 founding of the U.S. Highway 66 Association in Tulsa.

The Gathering Place's dining page lists three food-and-drink spots inside the park: Redbud Café, The Patio and Vista at the Boathouse, which the page marks as available for private events. Confirm hours on the park's own site before planning a meal around one.

Redbud Café is inside Williams Lodge; the park's dining page lists it as open daily, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with sandwiches, hot breakfast items and grab-and-go snacks. The Patio, on the east side of the lodge, is a quick-service spot with seating for around 200 people; the page says its hours vary seasonally.

*Check before you go. Every lake here links to the official page we checked it against. Each state a price we read off that page on the date we checked. Fees, seasons, water levels, algal advisories and ramp closures change without notice and belong to the agency that runs the water. A blank is something we did not confirm, not something the lake lacks. Never assume a lifeguard. Whether a beach is staffed turns on the season, the day, and which agency runs that particular beach — two beaches on one lake can differ. If that matters to your family, confirm it with the agency before you set out.
