What to Know Before You Arrive
The city was founded in 1868 and incorporated in 1870, named after the Wichita tribe. Its first economy arrived on hooves: the Chisholm Trail brought Texas cattle north to the Kansas railheads, and Wichita was one of the towns that money built. That period lasted a matter of years rather than decades, which is the thing most visitors get wrong about cattle towns — the era everyone pictures was brief and the buildings that survive from it are few.
The second economy arrived in the air and never left. By 1929 the Aeronautical Chamber of Commerce was calling Wichita the Air Capital of the World, and aviation remains the city's largest industry today. This is a working manufacturing city, not a museum of one, and the aircraft plants on the edges of town are the reason its population is larger than anywhere else in Kansas.
The Arkansas and the Little Arkansas rivers meet in Wichita, and the Keeper of the Plains stands at the confluence: a 44-foot steel sculpture by the Kiowa-Comanche artist Blackbear Bosin, which Wikipedia describes as one of Wichita's most recognized and beloved symbols. The City of Wichita lists a “Ring of Fire” of fire pots around the sculpture that burns nightly for 15 minutes, from 9:00 to 9:15 p.m. during Daylight Saving Time and from 7:00 to 7:15 p.m. during Standard Time, and that is not lit in high wind, rain or other inclement weather or when the river level is too high. The city's page carries no date and the city suspended the display in October 2023 because of an electronics issue; we were unable to confirm that the display is lit at present, so check with the City of Wichita before relying on it.
The Road Trip Stop
Old Cowtown Museum at 1865 W Museum Blvd is the anchor: a walk-through historic town rather than a building with cases in it, covering the cattle-drive years the city is named for. Admission is $12* for adults, $11* for seniors aged 62 and over and $10* for ages 5 to 17, with ages 4 and under free; tax is already included.
Check the season before you set the day
- The hours change twice a year and the closed days change with them. April to October it opens Wednesday to Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5:00 p.m., closed Monday and Tuesday. November to March it opens Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., closed Sunday and Monday. A Sunday visit works in summer and not in winter, which catches people out.
- Last admission is sold an hour before closing. On a site you walk around rather than through, arriving at 4:00 p.m. is not enough time.
- If you receive food assistance, admission is reduced or free. The museum takes part in Museums for All, so an EBT card and photo ID get free or reduced entry here and at more than 1,500 museums nationally. It also runs Pay What You Wish Sundays on some dates.
- There is a self-guided walking tour app for GPS-enabled devices if you would rather go round at your own pace than wait for a guide. Telephone 316-350-3323.

Neighborhoods
Old Town
A district on the eastern edge of downtown that began in the 1870s as a collection of warehouses served by rail lines and now holds restaurants, locally owned shops, clubs, theaters and galleries among brick-lined streets and historic lampposts.
The confluence
Where the Arkansas and Little Arkansas rivers meet, with the Keeper of the Plains at the confluence and two suspended foot bridges leading to the plaza at its base.
Delano
On the west bank of the Arkansas River, immediately west of downtown. Visit Wichita describes rowdy roughnecks, dance hall saloons and cattle-driving cowboys in the district in the early 1870s, and the Kansas Historical Society calls it the hub of gambling and drinking in cowtown-era Wichita. Today the district has more than 250 businesses, from restaurants and bars to retail shops.
The plant districts
The aviation works on the city's edges, which employ more of Wichita than anything downtown does. Not a visitor area, but the reason the city exists at its current size.
The Food Stop
Visit Wichita lists dining in Old Town, on the eastern edge of downtown, and describes the Historic Delano District on the west bank of the Arkansas River as lined with more than 250 businesses that include restaurants and bars. We were unable to confirm a specific long-standing Wichita restaurant for this guide. This guide does not name a business without checking that business's own site, and none was verified on 2026-10-14.

NCAA Division IWichita State's official athletics site lists men's and women's basketball among its sports. The same site says that in the school's early years, when wheat was shocked or headed, most athletes earned money for college expenses by working all summer in the harvest, and credits a football manager with the 1904 poster name “Wheat Shockers”, later shortened to Shockers.

ECHL (ice hockey)ECHL hockey at INTRUST Bank Arena, which Visit Wichita places mere blocks from Old Town. The team's site lists 36 home games for the 2026-27 season, its 35th season as a franchise, with opening night on Saturday, October 17.

Practical Road Trip Info
One day covers the city. Old Cowtown and the confluence in the same day works; adding the aviation museum makes it a full one.
Check which season's hours apply. Wichita's main museum closes on different days in summer and winter, and the changeover is at the start of April and November.
This is tornado country in spring. Severe weather is a genuine planning factor between April and June on the southern plains, and local warnings are worth paying attention to rather than photographing.
It is a manufacturing city, not a resort, so lodging is plentiful and reasonably priced, and the weekday rhythm is set by shift patterns rather than by visitors.
The Local Debate
Family-Friendly
Old Cowtown's walk-through street
Children can go into the buildings rather than look at them through glass, and the site is outdoors with room to move. Kids aged 4 and under are free.
The Keeper of the Plains footbridges
Visit Wichita lists two suspended foot bridges that let people cross from the north and south directions to the plaza at the base of the Keeper of the Plains.
Botanica's children's garden
Visit Wichita describes the 1-acre Downing Children's Garden at Botanica, with a treehouse, a musical maze and a bee house; Botanica sits near the Arkansas River in the Riverside neighborhood.
A Wind Surge game
Equity Bank Park is home to the Wichita Wind Surge, the Minnesota Twins' Double-A affiliate, which in its own release describes what it offers as affordable family entertainment; the club is set to be renamed the Wichita Turbo Tubs for 2027.
