What to Know Before You Arrive
Kansas City, Missouri sits on the Missouri River at its confluence with the Kansas River, straddling the Missouri–Kansas state line — the Kansas side has its own separate city, also named Kansas City. The Missouri side had 508,090 residents in 2020, the 38th-largest city in the country, with a metro population of about 2.25 million.
The city's barbecue reputation traces to Henry Perry, who opened Kansas City's first barbecue stand in 1921 after migrating from Memphis; Arthur Bryant's later took over Perry's restaurant and added sugar to the sauce. Kansas City now counts more than 90 barbecue restaurants across its metro area, with Arthur Bryant's, Gates Bar-B-Q and Fiorella's Jack Stack among the names most associated with the tradition.
The historic 18th & Vine district is described as the home of distinctive Kansas City jazz and holds both the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the American Jazz Museum. In 2017, UNESCO designated Kansas City a City of Music, recognizing this district and the city's musical heritage. Kansas City also markets itself as the “City of Fountains,” with more than 200 working fountains, including the largest privately funded fountains at Kauffman Stadium.
The Road Trip Stop
The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, in the historic 18th & Vine Jazz District at 1616 E 18th St, describes itself as the world's only national museum dedicated to preserving and celebrating the history of African-American baseball. Visitors take a self-guided tour through text panels, photographs, artifacts and film exhibits set against a timeline of baseball and African American history. The museum's own site carries the fuller history of the Negro Leagues; visit nlbm.com to read it directly from the institution.
Plan the visit
- The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum is a self-guided tour. The museum's ticket page lists adult admission at $15* and $12* for seniors (65+) and for ages 5–12; ages 4 and under are free, veterans pay $10*, and active military are admitted free. A ticket does not include the American Jazz Museum, which is housed in the same building.
- The American Jazz Museum sits in the same 18th & Vine district, allowing both museums to be visited in a single trip to the neighborhood.
- Barbecue restaurants are spread across the metro, not concentrated in one district; a specific stop generally requires planning a route rather than a single walkable crawl.
- Chiefs and Royals games are both on the Missouri side of the metro, at Arrowhead Stadium and Kauffman Stadium respectively, in the same sports complex.

Practical Road Trip Info
Kansas City is a bi-state metro area: Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas are two separate cities across a state line, which affects which attractions and teams count as being in which city.
Barbecue restaurants are spread across the metro rather than concentrated downtown; plan routes between specific restaurants rather than expecting a single walkable district.
Arrowhead Stadium and Kauffman Stadium share the Truman Sports Complex in Kansas City, Missouri, where the Jackson County Sports Complex Authority is landlord to both teams. Whether any home dates fall on the same day was not confirmed; check each team's own schedule. The Chiefs' own site also carries a page on a new stadium project in Kansas, so check the team sites for current plans.
The 18th & Vine district holds both the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the American Jazz Museum within walking distance of each other.
2 public campgrounds within 25 miles of Kansas City, all first-come rather than bookable. Public campgrounds run by federal agencies. State-park and private campgrounds are not included.
