What to Know Before You Arrive

Jefferson City sits on the southern bank of the Missouri River in mid-Missouri, roughly equidistant between Kansas City to the west and St. Louis to the east. It had 43,228 residents in 2020, making it the 9th least populous U.S. state capital. Missouri named the city for Thomas Jefferson in 1821, the year after statehood, and the state legislature moved there permanently in 1826.

The Missouri State Capitol, the city's most prominent landmark, was completed in 1924 and rises from a bluff overlooking the Missouri River, with a dome visible across the surrounding area. Its dedication was marked by a parade on “New Capitol Day,” October 6, 1924. Downtown Jefferson City centers on government and history, with the Capitol, the Governor's Mansion, the state museum and Jefferson Landing among its key sites.

The Missouri State Penitentiary operated from 1836 to 2004, closing when the Jefferson City Correctional Center opened in September of that year. Its own tour operator describes it as the oldest continually operating prison west of the Mississippi River, having run for 168 years before closing. It now operates as a publicly accessible historic site, with guided history tours through its historic housing units and grounds.

The Road Trip Stop

The Missouri State Capitol is the anchor of a Jefferson City visit: completed in 1924, it rises from a bluff over the Missouri River and remains the seat of Missouri's state government. A short distance away, the Missouri State Penitentiary operated for 168 years, from 1836 to 2004, before closing when a new correctional facility opened; it now runs guided history tours through its historic grounds.

Plan the visit

  • The Capitol building sits on a bluff overlooking the river; check current public-tour hours before visiting, since a state government building's hours can shift around legislative session.
  • The Missouri State Penitentiary's 2-hour History Tour currently starts from $30*, walking through the facility's historic housing units and grounds; the operator notes ages 5 and under are not permitted on the tour.
  • The State Museum and Jefferson Landing are additional downtown historic sites near the Capitol.
  • The Governor's Mansion is part of the same government-and-history downtown cluster.

Fees, seasons, water levels, algal advisories and ramp closures change without notice and belong to the agency that runs the water. A blank is something we did not confirm, not something the lake lacks. Never assume a lifeguard. Whether a beach is staffed turns on the season, the day, and which agency runs that particular beach — two beaches on one lake can differ. If that matters to your family, confirm it with the agency before you set out.
