What to Know Before You Arrive
Hannibal sits on the Mississippi River in Marion and Ralls counties, about 110 miles northwest of St. Louis via Interstate 72 and U.S. Route 61. Samuel Langhorne Clemens spent his mid-19th-century boyhood here, and the town shaped the fiction he later wrote as Mark Twain, including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884).
The Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum marked its 100th anniversary in 2012 and has drawn visitors from all 50 states and roughly 60 countries. A cave just outside town, discovered around 1819–1820 by Jack Simms and his brothers while hunting, went through several names — Simms Cave, Panther Cave, then Saltpeter Cave from 1830 to 1848 — before being renamed Mark Twain Cave in 1880, following Tom Sawyer's publication.
Clemens visited the cave frequently as a 13-year-old, particularly during Dr. Joseph Nash McDowell's ownership from 1848 to 1868; what he found inside during that period later inspired the graveyard scene in Tom Sawyer, and the cave itself became the model for the novel's McDougal's Cave, including details like a slate post office and a treasure room. Lover's Leap, a clifftop overlook tied to local Native American legend, gives panoramic views of downtown Hannibal and the Mississippi River.
The Road Trip Stop
Mark Twain Cave is the anchor outside downtown: the actual cave Clemens explored as a boy, renamed in 1880 after Tom Sawyer's publication and still running public tours today. Current tours are priced at $29.99* for ages 13 and up and $16.99* for ages 4–12; the operator notes to call for daily departure times or discounted group reservations of 20 or more.
Plan the visit
- Mark Twain Cave tours run on a departure schedule; calling ahead for daily departure times is recommended by the operator.
