What to Know Before You Arrive

Iowa City was created by an act of the Legislative Assembly of the Iowa Territory on 21 January 1839, and it governed from here for nearly twenty years — as the territory's third and final capital from 1841 to 1846, then as the state's first capital from 1846 to 1857. In 1857 the capital moved to Des Moines. What a town usually does after losing its government is shrink. What this one did was hand the statehouse to a university.

The Old Capitol is now a National Historic Landmark and a museum in the middle of the University of Iowa campus. It is not on a separate civic block with lawns around it; the university grew up against and around it, which is why the building reads as part of a campus rather than as a relic.

The literary designation is more than branding. UNESCO's City of Literature title came in November 2008 and made Iowa City the third in the world to hold it. The Iowa Writers' Workshop is the institution behind that, and its graduate list is the argument. For a traveller it means a small midwestern city with an unusual density of bookshops, readings and literary walking routes.

03

The Road Trip Stop

The Old Capitol Museum at 21 N. Clinton Street is the anchor, and it “is open to the public with always-free admission.” It is run by the University of Iowa, which is why the former seat of state government now sits at the centre of a campus.

Free, central, and check the hours

  • Admission is always free. That is the museum's own wording, and it makes this one of the cheapest significant stops in the state.
  • The museum is open Wednesday to Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and closed Sunday to Tuesday and on federal holidays; self-guided visits are available any time during open hours. The museum posts its hours on its own hours page.
  • It is in the middle of a working campus, on the Pentacrest, and the museum has no parking lot of its own. Its getting-here page lists several city and university ramps, recommends the University's Iowa Memorial Union ramp or the city's Capitol Street ramp, and says most on-street parking in downtown Iowa City is metered with limits of 1–2 hours. The downtown transit interchange is half a block from the building.
  • Group visits and tours are arranged separately from general admission. The museum's hours page asks large groups and anyone who would like a guided tour to schedule a visit, and its tours page lists reservations as required for guided tours, with a minimum of four weeks' notice.

Neighborhoods

The Pedestrian Mall
A pedestrian mall in downtown Iowa City near the campus, officially City Plaza. The area contains restaurants, bars, retail, hotels and the Iowa City Public Library, and the mall hosts summertime events including the Friday Night Concert Series, the Iowa City Jazz Festival and the Iowa City Arts Festival.

The University of Iowa campus
Wrapped around the Old Capitol on both sides of the Iowa River.

Northside
North of downtown, the historic Northside neighbourhood. Its commercial corner, the Northside Marketplace around Market and Linn Streets, closes North Linn Street to cars each season for outdoor dining; the 2026 season began on 1 May and runs through the fall.

Coralville
The adjoining city to the north-west. Its city site describes Iowa River Landing, just south of I-80 at exit 242, as an entertainment, retail and dining district that includes a hotel and conference centre, restaurants and shopping.

Hidden Gems

▣

Prairie Lights Bookstore

A bookshop at 15 S. Dubuque Street that says it opened in May 1978 and points to its reading series of local, national and international writers as the source of its reputation. Its website carries an events calendar.

▣

The literary walk

Bronze relief panels set in the pavement along both sides of Iowa Avenue from Clinton Street to Gilbert Street, carrying passages by writers with ties to Iowa. A 2011 extension along North Linn Street adds bronze book sculptures, and the Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature organisation counts 89 authors in all. Its website has an interactive map of every piece.

▣

The Stanley Museum of Art

The university's art museum, which opened a new building at 160 W. Burlington Street on 26 August 2022 after the building it had occupied was judged unsuitable for fine art following the June 2008 flooding of the Iowa River. Admission is always free.

▣

The Old Capitol's dome

The gold dome on the 1840s statehouse, visible across the campus and the reason the building still reads as a seat of government.

07

The Food Stop

Iowa City's eating is concentrated on and around the downtown pedestrian mall beside the campus, at the density a university town of 74,828 supports. One long-standing option in the Northside is the Hamburg Inn No. 2 at 214 N. Linn Street, which describes itself as a place for a meal “for generations in Iowa City” and says it reopened in the fall of 2023 after almost 90 years. Its site lists hours of 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, and says it serves breakfast all day.

The Home Teams

Iowa Hawkeyes

NCAA Division I
Kinnick Stadium and Carver-Hawkeye Arena

Kinnick Stadium seats 69,250 — not far off the whole city's population of 74,828, and enough to transform Iowa City on a home Saturday. On a home date, the athletics department's football parking page lists the day-of-game parking and says all game-day parking is cashless, with payment by credit card. We were unable to confirm how lodging availability or rates change on home dates; a hotel's own booking page shows the rate for a given date.

No MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL or MLS team plays in Iowa City. The city's teams are the University of Iowa Hawkeyes, a member of the Big Ten Conference; the football team plays at Kinnick Stadium, while the basketball, volleyball, wrestling and gymnastics teams compete at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Practical Road Trip Info

I-80 runs along the north of the city, which puts Iowa City on the interstate route across Iowa. We were unable to confirm the driving distance from the interstate to the Old Capitol.

Check whether it is a home football Saturday. Kinnick Stadium seats 69,250, a little under the city's population of 74,828, and the athletics department's football parking page lists the day-of-game parking and says game-day parking is cashless, with payment by credit card.

The museum is free and open Wednesday to Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and closed Sunday to Tuesday and on federal holidays. The museum posts its hours on its own hours page.

Term dates are published by the university. We were unable to confirm how visitor numbers or opening times change between semesters. The University of Iowa registrar lists the official academic calendar, and the Old Capitol Museum posts its hours on its own hours page.

10 public campgrounds within 25 miles of Iowa City, all bookable ahead. Public campgrounds run by federal agencies. State-park and private campgrounds are not included.
