What to Know Before You Arrive

Galena sits in the northwestern corner of Illinois, in the driftless area — the small four-state region the last glaciers missed — along the Galena River a few miles inland from the Mississippi. Between 1825 and 1828, roughly 21 million pounds of lead came out of the local mines, and the population jumped from 200 to more than 10,000. For a stretch in the 1830s and 1840s Galena rivaled Chicago in size and was one of the busiest steamboat ports on the upper Mississippi.

The bust came almost as fast. Demand for lead dropped sharply, erosion left the Galena River inaccessible to steamboats, and the census count fell from 8,196 in 1860 to 5,005 in 1900. What kept it whole was poverty: with no money to rebuild, the town’s 1840s and 1850s brick warehouses, hotels and homes stayed exactly where they were. Today, 85% of the town is within the Galena Historic District, one of the highest ratios of any American city.

Galena’s other export was people. Ulysses S. Grant moved here in 1860 to work at his father’s leather store; nine Galena residents rose to Civil War general’s rank, an extraordinary number for a town of about 8,000. After Appomattox, grateful citizens bought Grant an Italianate brick home on Bouthillier Street; it is now the Ulysses S. Grant Home State Historic Site, preserved with much of the original furniture. The DeSoto House Hotel on Main, open since 1855, is where Lincoln spoke from the balcony in 1856 and where Grant based his 1868 presidential campaign. All three are within a five-minute walk of each other.

03

The Road Trip Stop

Main Street is the anchor and the reason you drive to Galena. A curving, brick-fronted three-block canyon of 1840s and 1850s commercial buildings, pinned between the Galena River on one side and the bluffs on the other, with the DeSoto House Hotel as the marker in the middle. You can walk it end to end in fifteen minutes; you can spend an entire afternoon in one block.

Budget the time

  • Half a day for Main Street plus the Grant Home and DeSoto House; a full day if the Old Market House, the History Museum and a bluff-top viewpoint are on the list.
  • Parking is a mix of free and paid. The City of Galena lists a large free all-day lot on the east side of the river near the Old Train Depot Visitors’ Information Center, with pedestrian access over one of two bridges to downtown, and a substantial number of free downtown street spaces, some limited to three hours. Galena Country Tourism notes that parking may be limited during busy times and that some walking may be required.
  • Grant Home tours run on a continuous basis in season. The site operator lists the home as open Wednesday through Sunday from May through October, 9:00 am until 4:45 pm, with a wait of 15 minutes or less between tours and no more than 16 guests per tour; from November 1, tours require a reservation. Donations are suggested at $5.00* for adults.
  • Save time for the driftless views. Horseshoe Mound outside town is the classic overlook; the Mississippi is 10 minutes west.

Neighborhoods

Main Street Historic District
The 3-block riverfront commercial core — 1840s and 1850s brick facades, specialty shops, galleries, wine tastings, DeSoto House. This is where most of a Galena visit happens.

The Bluffs (upper town)
The area around the U.S. Grant Home State Historic Site at 500 Bouthillier Street. The state site includes several small mid-19th century homes that make up the three-block “Grant Home Historic Neighborhood,” plus Grant State Park, a tree-shaded area south of the Grant Home with picnic tables for public use.

West Side / Riverside
The Galena River flats west of Main, with the old rail depot (now the visitor center), the Blackjack levee, and the small-town park spaces along the water.

Chestnut Mountain (out of town)
Chestnut Mountain Resort, which its own site places near Galena in hills overlooking the Upper Mississippi River valley — 19 ski and snowboard trails in winter, the Farside Gravity Mountain Bike Park in summer, and a lodge with over 100 rooms.

Hidden Gems

▣

Ulysses S. Grant Home State Historic Site

The 1860 Italianate brick house presented to Grant by the citizens of Galena in 1865 after Appomattox. Donations are suggested at $5.00* for adults; most of the original furniture is still in the rooms.

▣

DeSoto House Hotel

The oldest operating hotel in Illinois, open since 1855, on Main Street. Lincoln spoke from its balcony in 1856; Grant ran his 1868 presidential campaign from its rooms. Walk-through lobby even for non-guests.

▣

Old Market House State Historic Site

An 1845 Greek Revival market hall in the middle of the downtown grid, one of the oldest surviving market houses in the Midwest. Admission could not be confirmed: the state’s site page lists no price, and the state’s pages and the site operator’s visit page differ on whether and when the building is open, so call 815-777-3310 or check the operator’s site before planning around it.

▣

Horseshoe Mound Preserve

A public bluff-top preserve outside town with a curving overlook that takes in the driftless hills and the Mississippi valley beyond. Best in autumn.

*Fees subject to change, please check granthome.org for updated information.

The Food Stop

Fritz and Frites at 317 N. Main St. lists “Alsatian Cuisine” on its own site; the dishes it names include Schnitzel and Sauerbraten (marinated beef), both served with red cabbage or sauerkraut and spaetzle, and Steak Frites and Poulet Roti (garlic roasted chicken). Check the restaurant’s site for current hours and reservations.

For a full experience, Galena Brewing Company on Main brews on premises and serves standard-issue pub food; DeSoto House’s Green Street Tavern is the historic downstairs option. Two wineries list tasting rooms on Main Street: Galena Cellars at 111 N. Main St., which also has a vineyard tasting room just outside town, and Massbach Ridge Winery at 117 N. Main St., whose winery and vineyard are in Elizabeth. Each site lists its own hours, which can vary.

07

The Home Teams

Galena has ~3,300 residents — no professional or college teams. Closest are the Northwoods League clubs in Dubuque (Iowa) and Kenosha.

Practical Road Trip Info

One night, minimum. Half a day is genuinely enough to see Main Street; an overnight lets you slow down, sit at DeSoto House with a coffee, and catch the town before the day-tripper wave arrives from Chicago.

Weekends fill fast. Galena is a well-known Chicago-area getaway; Friday and Saturday nights in summer and fall book weeks ahead. Weekdays and shoulder-season are the calmer play.

The town is walkable but hilly. Main Street runs along the river; every side street climbs sharply to the bluff-top residential blocks. Comfortable shoes.

Winter has its own calendar. Galena Country Tourism points downhill skiers and snowboarders to Chestnut Mountain Resort, which it lists with a 475-foot vertical drop, and its event guide describes Night of the Luminaria & Living Windows, a winter-evening event with more than 5,000 candlelit luminaries in downtown Galena. Check the tourism board’s event page for this year’s date and times.

The Enjoy Illinois listing for Galena Trolley Tours describes a fully narrated, one-hour tour of the city’s streets, landmarks and scenic bluff overlooks. Tickets are sold at the Trolley Depot at 314 S Main St., open daily from May 1 through Oct 31 starting at 9:30 am; off-season times vary, so check with the operator before planning around it.

▣

Chestnut Mountain Resort

Chestnut Mountain Resort describes itself as offering “family-friendly amenities”: 19 ski and snowboard trails in winter; a 2,050-foot alpine slide and the Farside Gravity Mountain Bike Park in summer; and a lodge with over 100 rooms, an indoor pool, a sauna and a whirlpool.

▣

National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium (Dubuque)

Across the Mississippi River in Dubuque, Iowa, about 16 miles west of Galena in a straight line. The museum’s own site describes it as part museum, part aquarium and part science center, and says every admission ticket is a two-day pass.

▣

Horseshoe Mound bluff walk

A Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation preserve of nearly 200 acres at 1679 N Blackjack Rd, with hiking trails and overlooks at the east and west ends of the preserve. The foundation states that it closes seasonally from the first major snow or December 1, whichever happens first, until no later than April 1, and lists additional closed dates. Its page does not give admission, daily hours or trail difficulty, so check with the foundation before planning around those.
