What to Know Before You Arrive
Milwaukee sits on the western shore of Lake Michigan where three rivers — the Milwaukee, Menomonee and Kinnickinnic — meet the big water. The name descends from a Potawatomi word rendered mahn-ah-wauk, generally translated as “council grounds,” and the Potawatomi and Menominee held it long before the Germans and Poles arrived. Everything a visitor associates with Milwaukee — the beer, the brick, the Basilica of St. Josaphat, the bratwurst on the sausage race — is a downstream effect of two nineteenth-century immigrant waves.
By 1900, roughly a third of the city was of German background, and the beer industry made Milwaukee’s name. Miller, Pabst and Schlitz were all headquartered here at their peaks. Miller’s brewery still runs tours a short drive from downtown; Pabst’s old headquarters is a downtown mixed-use district; Schlitz became a nightlife venue. The nickname “Brew City” is honest history, not a marketing line.
The other nickname — the Cream City — is not about dairy. It is the color of the local brick, a creamy yellow fired from local clay. According to the Encyclopedia of Milwaukee, clay deposits can be found throughout Milwaukee County but the Menomonee River Valley held the supply that was easiest to work, and the nickname reflects the dominance of this brick during the city’s early decades; it lists St. Mary’s Catholic Church (1846) and Milwaukee Turner Hall (1882) among the buildings that survive today. Add Harley-Davidson (founded here in 1903, museum here today), Summerfest (the world’s largest music festival by Guinness certification since 1999), and one of the largest Polish-American communities in the country, and you have a city that punches well above its census weight.
The Road Trip Stop
The Milwaukee Art Museum is the anchor, and the Santiago Calatrava-designed Quadracci Pavilion is why. The Burke Brise Soleil — the 217-foot movable sunscreen that opens and closes like wings — is timed to a schedule the museum publishes, and standing under it as it moves is a different experience than photographing it from outside. The collection inside is real too, with a strong holding of German Expressionism and Georgia O’Keeffe’s home-state work, but plenty of people come primarily to see the building.
Budget the time
- Time your visit to the wings. The museum’s Burke Brise Soleil page says the wings open with the museum, flap at noon and close at 10 p.m., weather permitting, while the FAQ on its visit page says they close with the museum. The two pages differ, so check with the museum before planning around a closing time.
- Two hours for the collection is fair. Longer if the temporary exhibition interests you, or shorter if the wings are the whole draw — both are legitimate visits.
- Combine it with a lakefront walk. The museum sits at the head of a broad lakefront park and beach; the free walk connects to Discovery World and the war memorial in twenty minutes.
- The museum lists two garages. The Calatrava underground garage posts tiered rates by length of stay. The Museum Center Park garage, on Lincoln Memorial Drive directly west of the museum, lists an early-bird rate of $10* for entry by 10 a.m. and exit by 9 p.m., and a weekend rate of $10* for entry by midnight and exit by 3 a.m.; sales tax is applied at checkout. Current rates are on the museum’s parking page.

Neighborhoods
Historic Third Ward
The old wholesale-goods district south of downtown along the Milwaukee River, now brick lofts, galleries and the Public Market. Walkable and photogenic; the RiverWalk runs right through it.
East Side / Downtown lakefront
The art museum, the war memorial, Discovery World and a wide public beach line one long lakefront park. On summer weekends this is the whole city’s front yard.
Bay View
South of downtown, past the KK River: bungalow blocks, taquerias, coffee bars and Milwaukee’s youngest live-music scene. Wander Kinnickinnic Avenue for the flavor.
Historic South Side / Mitchell Street
The old Polish neighborhood, still anchored by the Basilica of St. Josaphat — a Renaissance-Revival dome the parish built partly from salvaged Chicago federal-building stone. Latino businesses now line the commercial streets.
The Food Stop
Usinger’s Famous Sausage has been curing meat two blocks from the Milwaukee River since 1880 and still sells over a retail counter that looks essentially the same. The company’s visit page lists the retail store’s hours as 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday, closed most major holidays, says the shop carries sausage and deli meats and daily specials, and says the factory cannot be toured; check the page before planning around those hours.
A Friday fish fry is a Milwaukee tradition that Visit Milwaukee calls a cultural institution. The tourism bureau says its origins date back to Catholic dietary restrictions on eating meat on Fridays, brought to Wisconsin by European immigrants in the 19th century, and that Prohibition further cemented it, since taverns used it to draw patrons when alcohol sales were restricted. It describes the typical plate as fried fish, potatoes, rye bread and coleslaw, served year-round in VFW halls, supper clubs and restaurants, and at American Legion posts and neighborhood bars. Menus and Friday hours vary by restaurant, so check before planning around a particular fish fry.

The Home Teams
Milwaukee Brewers
MLB National League CentralThe Brewers play at American Family Field, which opened in 2001 and seats about 41,900. The team’s mascot page says Bernie Brewer returned in 1993 and has been a fixture at every home game since, and its Bernie’s Slide Experience page ties the slide to the Brewers hitting a home run. The team’s page on the Famous Racing Sausages lists five of them — Bratwurst, Polish, Italian, Hot Dog and Chorizo — and describes the sausages racing along the warning track before the seventh inning.
Milwaukee Bucks
NBA Central DivisionThe Bucks won the 2021 NBA title, coming back from 2–0 down against Phoenix; Giannis Antetokounmpo dropped 50 in the clincher at Fiserv Forum. The arena, which opened in 2018, sits at the heart of the Deer District — a downtown plaza that fills to overflowing on playoff nights.
Milwaukee Admirals
AHLMilwaukee’s hockey team, the top farm club of the Nashville Predators, plays at the downtown arena that was home to Milwaukee’s pro basketball team from 1968 to 1988.
No NFL team; the Green Bay Packers are the state’s pro football team and play two and a half hours north. Milwaukee has always been a baseball, basketball and beer town.

Practical Road Trip Info
Budget two full days for Milwaukee if the museum, the Harley, a game and a fish fry are all on the list. One day is enough only if you skip one of them.
Best season is late May through September, when the lakefront is warm enough to walk, Summerfest and the ethnic festivals are running and the Wings are on schedule. The rest of the year is functional but colder than most visitors expect.
Summerfest is easiest by foot or bike. The park is on the lakefront just south of downtown; nearby parking is expensive and slow. The festival’s 2025 transportation release, issued by Milwaukee World Festival, Inc., lists Bublr Bikes stations near the Mid and South gates, a streetcar line with a stop near the North gate, and MCTS shuttles from three park-and-ride lots, and advises arriving early and using downtown exits to avoid congestion near the lakefront. Check the Get Around Guide on Summerfest.com for the current year before planning.
Watch the Bucks and Brewers schedules if you want a game. The two seasons overlap from April to June, so if the trip lands in that window you can catch both on the same weekend.
The Local Debate
Family-Friendly
Discovery World
A hands-on science and freshwater exploration center on the lakefront, with a schooner docked outside in warm months. Best for elementary-age visitors.
Milwaukee County Zoo
A full-sized big-city zoo west of downtown with a mini-train that circles the grounds. Bigger and less crowded than a first-time visitor expects.
A Brewers game
American Family Field has a retractable roof, so a game is on rain or shine. The Sausage Race in the middle of the sixth is a bigger draw than any of the actual sausages could plausibly justify.
The RiverWalk and Bronze Fonz
Walk both banks of the Milwaukee River through downtown; the Bronze Fonz statue near the east bank is a five-minute stop, and the RiverWalk itself is stroller-easy.
