What to Know Before You Arrive
The Dells of the Wisconsin River are more than five miles of river corridor with a gorge, cliffs and tributary canyons cut into Cambrian sandstone, according to the Wisconsin DNR, which dates that sandstone to 510–520 million years ago. The Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey says the gorges in the Dells area were probably cut when glacial Lake Wisconsin drained catastrophically after its glacier dam failed. French explorers called the narrows dalles, meaning rapids, and English speakers turned that into “Dells.” The rock formations — Stand Rock, Chimney Rock, Witches Gulch — have not changed much since. What’s changed is everything around them.
The change started with a photograph. H. H. Bennett bought a studio in Kilbourn City (the town’s later name for Wisconsin Dells) in 1865 and by 1886 had invented a shutter fast enough to catch his son Ashley in the middle of a leap across Stand Rock. Prints and lantern slides distributed nationwide turned an isolated stretch of river into a destination. Bennett’s original studio, opened in 1875, is now the H. H. Bennett Studio State Historic Site — still on the same block, still showing his glass negatives.
Modern Wisconsin Dells is what tourism did to that river. Amphibious duck tours — on WWII surplus DUKW vehicles — started here in 1946 and still run today; the Original Wisconsin Ducks fleet is more than 90 vehicles strong. Noah’s Ark, which opened on the strip in 1979, is 70 acres and calls itself the largest outdoor waterpark in the United States. The Dells markets itself as the “Waterpark Capital of the World,” and with the number of indoor and outdoor parks in a five-mile radius it is not a claim anyone in the industry disputes.
The Road Trip Stop
A duck tour is the anchor and the most Dells thing you can do here. Original Wisconsin Ducks describes its tour as one hour, half on land and half on water, in World War II-era amphibious vehicles, covering the Wisconsin River, Dell Creek, Lake Delton and the Dells Scenic Park on trails the operator says it has used since 1946. The Original Wisconsin Ducks began operating here in 1946 and still run the largest amphibious tour fleet in the country.
Budget the time
- An hour for a duck tour is the standard ride; longer boat cruises (Upper Dells and Lower Dells) are separate operations on the same river.
- The rock formations are on the boat routes, not the road ones. Dells Boat Tours lists two shore landings on its Upper Dells tour, Witches Gulch and Stand Rock; tour times vary, so check the operator’s site or call before planning around them.
- Time waterpark visits to the crowds. Summer weekends are the peak; late May, September and any weekday are noticeably quieter. Indoor parks run all winter.
- Downtown is walkable but seasonal. The main Broadway strip is busy from Memorial Day to Labor Day and half-shuttered the rest of the year; plan food and shopping around that.
Neighborhoods
Downtown / Broadway
The original 19th-century Dells townsite, still the base for boat tours, the historic H. H. Bennett Studio and a walkable strip of ice-cream shops, souvenir stores and diners.
The Strip (Wisconsin Dells Parkway)
Highway 12 through town, lined with waterparks, resorts, mini-golf and go-kart tracks. This is what people think of when they think of “Wisconsin Dells,” and it is a mile-long carnival in July.
Lake Delton
The small village directly south of Wisconsin Dells that hosts Noah’s Ark, most of the resort waterparks and the Tommy Bartlett Ski Show’s old site. Effectively part of the same visit.
Mirror Lake area
A small state park just south of town on a clear, sheltered stretch of water. Where locals actually swim. Kayak rentals and a wooded campground are the draw.
The Food Stop
Paul Bunyan’s Cook Shanty, at 411 US Hwy 13 in Wisconsin Dells, is described in its Travel Wisconsin listing as serving a family-style breakfast, with homemade buttermilk donuts made fresh every day. The restaurant’s own site could not be read for this guide, so check its hours and menu before planning a stop. It’s theatrical and dated in exactly the way a Dells breakfast should be. Two people can share a table for four and still walk out full.
Ishnala Supper Club sits on the shore of Mirror Lake inside Mirror Lake State Park, in Lake Delton; its own site describes a dining room where giant Norway pines grow right through the roof. It operates seasonally and does not take reservations, so check ishnala.com for current dates and hours. Brandy Old Fashioned, prime rib, and a table looking out over the lake at sunset.

The Home Teams
No pro or NCAA team — Wisconsin Dells is a resort town of about 3,000 people. The nearest college programs are the Wisconsin Badgers in Madison, about an hour south.

This is a list of what is near you, not a recommendation of any of it. 1 of these carries an accreditation we confirmed against the accrediting body’s own register. Where there is no badge we did not confirm one — that is not a judgement on the place, and a good many municipal, state and university sites belong to no register we check. 2 entries are marked with an asterisk: we could not confirm part of what is listed, and the note under it says which part. Practical Road Trip Info
Budget one full day for the strip and boat tours, two if a full waterpark day is on the list. Devil’s Lake and the Circus World Museum extend it to three easily.
Book resorts ahead in season. Summer weekends run at full capacity across the strip; last-minute rooms drift to the smaller motels. Weekdays and shoulder-season are the cheap play.
Some resort waterparks sell day passes without a stay. Wilderness Resort states that no stay is required and that daily waterpark passes are available to the public in limited quantities, and Great Wolf Lodge sells day passes to guests who are not staying overnight. Kalahari’s day-pass terms could not be confirmed; check its website before planning around them.
The town shuts down early off-season. October through April, most attractions run reduced hours or close entirely; check individual sites before planning a spring or fall visit.
The Local Debate
Family-Friendly
A duck tour
Amphibious WWII trucks, land and water in one ride, and enough splash to satisfy the youngest passenger. About an hour, and the standard first-time Dells activity.
Noah’s Ark Waterpark
70 outdoor acres of slides, wave pools and lazy rivers on the strip, open Memorial Day through Labor Day. Noah’s Ark’s own FAQ says the park is usually slower at the beginning of its season, and that Tuesdays and Wednesdays in July or August are traditionally slower. Check its calendar for operating dates and hours.
Circus World Museum, Baraboo
Real big-top performances in season and the world’s largest collection of antique circus wagons. Twenty minutes south. Best for elementary-age visitors.
Devil’s Lake beaches
Two swimming beaches, one at each end of the lake, in a state park where the Wisconsin DNR says a vehicle admission sticker is required. The DNR also states that lifeguards are not provided.
