What to Know Before You Arrive

Kenosha sits on the southwestern corner of Lake Michigan, exactly between Milwaukee (32 miles north) and Chicago (50 miles south). Founded as Pike Creek in 1835, renamed Southport, then Kenosha — a Potawatomi/Ojibwe word for “pike” or “pickerel” — it grew as a Great Lakes shipping port and, from 1902 through 1988, one of the country’s most productive auto-manufacturing towns. The Rambler, Nash, Hudson and AMC all rolled off Kenosha lines.

The AMC lakefront plant closed in 1988 and was demolished in 1990. Instead of leaving 69 acres of industrial ruin on the water, the city cleared the site and turned it into HarborPark — a mixed development of condos, marina, parks, fountains and a public sculpture walk that opens directly onto the Lake Michigan shoreline. It is where locals bring visitors first, and it is impossible to picture what stood here before.

Kenosha runs a two-mile electric streetcar loop, opened in June 2000, using restored 1950s PCC cars on a route that connects HarborPark, the Metra station, downtown and the museum district. The city has 8 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline — nearly all of it public — and three museums (Public Museum, Civil War Museum, Dinosaur Discovery Museum) along a walkable strip near the lake. It is the anti-Dells: a quiet, well-kept, unshowy Great Lakes city.

03

The Road Trip Stop

The streetcar loop is the anchor and the most Kenosha thing you can do here. Ride the whole two-mile electric line in a restored PCC car — the same style of streetcar that ran in dozens of American cities in the 1950s — then get off at HarborPark and walk the lakefront. The route was built specifically to knit the downtown, harbor and museum district back together after the AMC plant came down.

Budget the time

  • Half a day is plenty for the streetcar, HarborPark and one museum; a full day if all three museums plus the Simmons Island lighthouse and a lakefront lunch are on the list.
  • Start with the streetcar. The Kenosha Streetcar Society lists the fare as $1.00* for ages 13 and older, 50 cents* for ages 5 to 12 and free for ages 4 and younger, with an all-day pass at $3.50* sold when boarding. The city’s own streetcar page could not be read for this check, so confirm current fares there before riding.
  • Check admission before going. A 2021 Visit Kenosha museum feature lists general admission to the Kenosha Public Museum and the Civil War Museum as free, with a separate fee for people 16 and over at the Civil War Museum’s main exhibit, The Fiery Trial; it gives no admission policy for the Dinosaur Discovery Museum. We were unable to confirm the fees for the current season, so check museums.kenosha.org before planning around them. Visit Kenosha places all three museums within steps of the Electric Streetcar.
  • Weekends fill the harbor. The marina and lakefront walking paths are busy from Memorial Day through Labor Day; a weekday visit shows the city at its actual pace.

Neighborhoods

Downtown / HarborPark
The rebuilt lakefront — former AMC plant site — with the marina, the streetcar loop, the three museums and most of the walkable restaurants and bars.

Uptown
Blue-collar residential-and-commercial district inland from downtown, historically the workforce neighborhoods for the plants. Still where the corner taverns and small groceries are.

West of I-94
The newer, faster-growing side of the city — UW-Parkside, Carthage College outreach, Snap-on world headquarters, big-box retail and suburbs.

Simmons Island
A small island connected to downtown by causeway, home to the 1866 lighthouse, the Kenosha History Center and a wide public beach.

Hidden Gems

▣

Kenosha Public Museum

A 2001 museum on the lakefront whose centerpiece is a 12,500-year-old woolly mammoth skeleton found in nearby Kenosha County — with cut marks that are considered some of the oldest evidence of human butchering in North America. Free admission.

▣

Civil War Museum

A 59,000-square-foot museum, opened 2008, telling the Civil War story from the perspective of the Upper Middle West (Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Iowa). One of the country’s largest state-focused Civil War collections. A 2021 Visit Kenosha feature lists general admission as free, with a separate fee for people 16 and over at the main exhibit, The Fiery Trial. We were unable to confirm the fees for the current season.

▣

Dinosaur Discovery Museum

Opened 2006 in the historic Old Post Office. The permanent exhibit is a hall of full-size mounted theropod dinosaur casts, laid out to walk the evolution from small raptors to Tyrannosaurus. Travel Wisconsin’s listing shows free admission.

▣

Kenosha North Pier Light and Simmons Island Beach

The 1906 red pier light at the end of the harbor breakwater is the landmark most visitors photograph first. Simmons Island beach next door is a wide public sand beach with the older 1866 light station on the point.

06

The Food Stop

Franks Diner, at 508 58th Street, says its 1926 lunch-car-style building came into downtown Kenosha by rail and then six horses, and that the original 1926 railcar structure is still the core of its dining space. The diner’s menu describes the Garbage Plate as eggs mixed into hash browns, green peppers and onions, with meat and cheese added.

For dinner the move is a lakefront supper club or one of the downtown taverns. Kenosha is a friendly fish-fry town on Fridays and a brat-and-a-beer town every other night; the walking radius from HarborPark keeps most of the good ones inside a ten-minute stroll.

About 12 miles south of Kenosha, across the state line, Illinois Beach State Park stretches 6.5 miles along the Lake Michigan shore, according to the Illinois DNR, which describes dunes and swales, marshes and oak forests across a North Unit and a South Unit. Practical Road Trip Info

Kenosha is a walkable half-day city. Park once near HarborPark or downtown, ride the streetcar, and everything is within a mile.

The Metra Union Pacific North Line runs from Kenosha into downtown Chicago — an easy way to base out of Kenosha for a Chicago day without driving into the Loop.

Museum weekdays are quieter. The museums get busy on weekend afternoons in summer; a weekday morning is the way in.

Off-season is thin. The streetcar and lakefront still run in the shoulder seasons but many downtown restaurants keep reduced hours. Summer is the full picture.

Family-Friendly

▣

The streetcar loop

Kids ride the same restored PCC cars adults do, on a 2-mile route with regular stops right on the lakefront. The Kenosha Streetcar Society lists an all-day pass at $3.50*, sold when boarding, and a fare of 50 cents* for ages 5 to 12, free for ages 4 and younger.

▣

Dinosaur Discovery Museum

Walk-through, full-scale theropod casts with kid-height sightlines. Small enough that a family visit doesn’t take a whole afternoon.

▣

Simmons Island beach

Wide, public sand beach next to the 1866 lighthouse; Visit Kenosha says the city’s Lake Michigan beaches are not staffed with lifeguards. Clear sightlines from the parking lot.

▣

Petrifying Springs Park

A 350-acre wooded park with hiking trails, a beer garden and a natural creek — the local hot day answer for families that want out of the sun. Free.
