What to Know Before You Arrive

Lansing is the capital of Michigan, with a 2020 population of 112,644, and the Lansing–East Lansing metro area runs to roughly 473,000 — the third-largest in the state after Detroit and Grand Rapids. The city's identity runs through cars from the start: Ransom E. Olds founded the Olds Motor Vehicle Company here in August 1897 and later started the REO Motor Car Company in 1905. Both companies built Lansing into an auto-manufacturing city well before Detroit became the industry's household name.

Michigan State University is a genuinely famous school, and it is worth being precise about where it actually is: East Lansing, the separate city next door, not Lansing proper. If you're planning a campus visit or a Spartans game, you're driving to a different address than the capitol. The two cities function together — downtown Lansing and campus East Lansing are a short drive apart — but they are not the same place, and a local will correct you if you conflate them.

The Michigan State Capitol is the other anchor, designed by architect Elijah E. Myers, with the cornerstone laid October 2, 1873 and the building dedicated January 1, 1879, the same day Governor Charles Croswell was inaugurated. It's a National Historic Landmark as of October 5, 1992, on the National Register of Historic Places since 1971, and a Michigan State Historic Site since 1956. The dome rises 267 feet to the tip of the finial above it — tall enough that it's visible from well outside downtown.

03

The Road Trip Stop

The R.E. Olds Transportation Museum is the anchor for the auto-history side of Lansing, named for the founder of both Oldsmobile and REO. The collection spans Oldsmobiles from 1897 to 2004, including a 1897 Olds — one of four ever built — on loan from the Smithsonian, plus REO vehicles including the REO Speed Wagon and an unusually complete Michigan license-plate collection. The building itself has history: it was originally home to the Bates automobile and later served as CATA's original bus garage starting in 1972, before the Olds museum opened here in May 1981.

Budget the time

  • 60–90 minutes covers the museum floor, including the 1897 Olds and the license plate collection.
  • Pair it with the Capitol, a short drive or a longer walk away, for a two-stop Lansing history afternoon.
  • Check museum hours before visiting; the museum’s Plan Your Visit page lists 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, closed Monday. Confirm current days and times on the official site.
  • If MSU or East Lansing is also on the list, budget separate drive time — it's a different city, not a Lansing neighborhood.

Neighborhoods

Downtown Lansing
The government and business core around the Capitol, with the river running through it and a compact walkable grid.

Old Town
A historic commercial district in the northern part of Lansing, listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the North Lansing Historic Commercial District. The Old Town Commercial Association says the area now has restored historic architecture and locally owned businesses; Visit Lansing says its historic Victorian buildings are filled with galleries, dining, boutiques and specialty shops.

REO Town
A district south of downtown Lansing, named after Ransom E. Olds, for whom both the Oldsmobile and REO brands were named. The REO Motor Car Company began producing automobiles along South Washington Avenue here in 1904 or 1905, depending on the source, and Visit Lansing says the renovated Washington Avenue streetscape is now home to restaurants, retail shops and professional services.

East Lansing & the MSU campus
A separate city adjoining Lansing to the east, built around Michigan State University's large tree-lined campus. Not part of Lansing proper, though the two run together in daily life.

Michigan State's Spartans play in East Lansing, not Lansing proper — a short drive from downtown, but a different city's team. No MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL or MLS franchise plays in the Lansing area; for that, Detroit is about 90 minutes east.

This is a list of what is near you, not a recommendation of any of it. Each of these carries an accreditation we confirmed against the accrediting body’s own register. Where there is no badge we did not confirm one — that is not a judgement on the place, and a good many municipal, state and university sites belong to no register we check. One entry is marked with an asterisk: we could not confirm part of what is listed, and the note under it says which part.
