What to Know Before You Arrive

Sandusky sits on Sandusky Bay, and its name comes from the Wyandot word for water — saundustee, or in a related form, “cold water.” The city incorporated in 1824, and today its roughly 25,000 residents share the town with what has become the single largest employer around: Cedar Point itself.

The peninsula that became Cedar Point was named for its cedar trees and used mainly by local fishermen until 1870, when Louis Zistel, a German immigrant who had ferried Confederate prisoners to nearby Johnson's Island during the Civil War, started rowing locals across to a public bathing beach instead. What grew from that beach is now a 364-acre park, owned and operated by Six Flags, considered the second-oldest continuously operating amusement park in the United States.

The park has expanded well past rides: a mile-long beach, an outdoor water park called Cedar Point Shores, an indoor water park called Castaway Bay, and an annual fall event called HalloWeekends now share the peninsula with the roller coasters. Ride lineups and coaster counts change from year to year, so treat any specific number you've heard as out of date by the time you arrive — check the park's own site for what's actually running this season.

03

The Road Trip Stop

Cedar Point is the reason most people come to Sandusky, and it earns that role on history alone: a 364-acre lake peninsula that's been an amusement destination since 1870, longer than all but one other park in the country. Ticket prices, ride lineups and even individual coasters change often enough that this guide won't guess at any of them — check the park's own site before you go.

Budget the time

  • A full day, easily two, covers the park itself; add a half-day more if the water parks are part of the plan.
  • Check current tickets and parking on the official site before you leave — the park's ticket page adds a processing fee and applicable taxes to the listed price, and some passes include parking, so this guide won't guess at a number that might already be wrong.
  • The mile-long beach and the marinas are free to walk even if you're not buying a park ticket, which is worth knowing if part of your group just wants the lake.
  • Shores & Islands Ohio, the regional visitors bureau, advises booking early for peak summer dates — its summer page says visitors planning Cedar Point trips, island visits, beach days or festival weekends should book early.

Hidden Gems

▣

Merry-Go-Round Museum

Housed since 1990 in Sandusky's historic former post office, this museum grew out of a 1988 postage stamp series on carousels, one of which pictured a figure from Cedar Point's own Kiddieland carousel.

▣

Cedar Point's mile-long beach

A public Lake Erie beach along the park's peninsula, walkable without a ride ticket.

▣

Jet Express ferry docks

Fast passenger ferries connecting Sandusky's waterfront to the Lake Erie islands, an easy way to add a second stop without moving the car.

▣

Cedar Point Shores & Castaway Bay

The park's outdoor and indoor water parks, both included with certain park tickets and each usable as a shorter, lower-key visit on their own.

06

The Food Stop

Inside Cedar Point, the park's dining page describes its offerings as running from a light snack to a full meal. The page's list of individual locations could not be read when checked, so confirm current locations, hours and menus on the park's site before planning a meal around one.

Downtown Sandusky has a smaller, quieter restaurant scene for a meal away from the park crowds for one night of your trip.

07

The Home Teams

No professional or college team is based in Sandusky — the roller coasters are the main event here, not a scoreboard.

Practical Road Trip Info

Give Cedar Point at least a full day, two if you're adding a water park; a single afternoon isn't enough to justify the drive for most visitors.

Shores & Islands Ohio, the regional visitors bureau, lists busy weekends around major events, holidays and attractions among typical summer conditions. How Cedar Point lines or room rates compare between weekdays and weekends, or between summer and the shoulder seasons, could not be confirmed from an official source, so check the park's calendar and lodging rates for the specific dates under consideration.

Which rides are running changes by day and by season — the park's Scheduled Ride Closures page lists attractions closed on set days, closed for the season, or opening at modified hours, and its pass promotions state the date a price goes up. Check the park's own site immediately before your trip rather than trusting anything printed here or anywhere else that isn't current.

Jet Express, the ferry that sails from downtown Sandusky to Put-in-Bay and Kelleys Island, says available routes may vary through the season and that scheduled trip times can change without notice, so confirm departure times before building an island day trip into your plan.
