What to Know Before You Arrive

The city takes its name from the Erie people, who lived along this shore until the mid-1600s. The French built Fort Presque Isle here in 1753 to hold the point, and once the land passed to Pennsylvania, surveyor Andrew Ellicott arrived in 1795 to lay out the streets that are still downtown’s grid today.

Erie earned its “Flagship City” nickname the hard way. President Madison ordered a fleet built here for the War of 1812, and Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry sailed it out to win the Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813, then sent the understated afterbattle report: “We have met the enemy and they are ours.” His flagship, the Niagara, sank on purpose in 1820 to preserve it, was raised in 1913, and now sits rebuilt behind the Erie Maritime Museum — Pennsylvania’s official state ship.

The other defining fact about Erie is stubbornness. When three railroads met here running three different track gauges in the 1850s, and a push came to standardize them, the city dug in to protect the transfer jobs the mismatch created. It is the same instinct that shows up in a town proud enough of a sandbar that it built a whole park around one.

The Road Trip Stop

Presque Isle State Park is a curved, 3,112-acre sandy peninsula that Lake Erie’s currents are slowly still reshaping — it has actually separated into a true island more than once in its recorded history. It has drawn more than four million visitors a year to eight numbered swimming beaches, which DCNR describes as offering the only surf swimming in Pennsylvania, five more Mill Road beaches where swimming is prohibited, and a trail network that includes the 13.5-mile paved Multi-Purpose Trail.

Budget the time

  • Half a day minimum for a drive of the 13-mile loop road with stops at two or three beaches; a full day if you’re swimming or biking the whole perimeter.
  • Arrive early on summer weekends; VisitErie advises arriving before 10 a.m. for easier parking and says the beaches fill up quickly on summer weekends.
  • Stop at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center first — the interactive exhibits and 75-foot observation tower are free and orient you before you pick a beach.
  • Save the Presque Isle Light for late afternoon, when the light off the lake is at its best for photos.
04

Neighborhoods

Downtown / State Street
The old surveyed grid from 1795, running straight up from the bayfront, with the city’s civic buildings and a scattering of restaurants that pick up once the government offices empty out.

The Bayfront
Erie’s working harbor turned public space, anchored by Dobbins Landing and the marina where the Niagara is berthed — a short walk from downtown but a completely different pace.

West Erie / Presque Isle Avenue
The gateway strip running out toward the peninsula, motels and drive-ins that have served beach traffic for decades.

Frontier / East Erie
Older residential blocks east of downtown, closer to Lake Erie’s bluffs than to the peninsula’s beaches, with a quieter, more workaday feel.

Hidden Gems

▣

Erie Land Lighthouse

Built in 1867 after two earlier towers sank into unstable soil, this one was decommissioned in 1899 and its Fresnel lens shipped off to a lighthouse in Ohio — leaving a fully restored tower with no working light.

▣

Flagship Niagara & Erie Maritime Museum

Commodore Perry’s flagship, sunk on purpose in 1820, raised nearly a century later, rebuilt more than once since, and still certified as a U.S. Coast Guard sailing school vessel today.

▣

Waldameer’s Comet

A 1951 wooden roller coaster preserved as an ACE Coaster Classic, still running its original layout at the fourth-oldest amusement park in Pennsylvania.

▣

Presque Isle Light

An 1872 lighthouse inside the state park that, unlike its decommissioned cousin downtown, is still an active aid to navigation on Lake Erie.

06

The Food Stop

Smith’s Hot Dogs has been an Erie name since 1927, when William Smith opened it as a small retail butcher shop; the Weber family bought it in 1949, switched it to manufacturing, and four generations later it’s still turning out natural-casing wieners from old-world recipes. Ask a local where to get one and you’ll get a specific corner store, not a chain.

We were unable to confirm which bayfront restaurants and farmers markets are currently open near the water, or what they serve.

The Home Teams

Erie SeaWolves

MiLB, Eastern League (Double-A)
UPMC Park · Downtown Erie

Detroit’s Double-A affiliate since 2001, and back-to-back Eastern League champions in 2023 and 2024 — the first repeat title since 2007–08. In 2025 the team spent a night rebranded as the “Erie Moon Mammoths” for an HBO comedy segment, named for mammoth bones once found nearby.

Erie Otters

OHL (Major Junior)
Erie Insurance Arena · Downtown Erie

Two-time OHL champions who have sent more than 50 alumni to the NHL, including a stretch through Erie by a young Connor McDavid before he went first overall in the 2015 draft.

The SeaWolves (Double-A baseball) and the Otters (major junior hockey) are the real hometown teams here; NFL, MLB and NBA teams play in Cleveland, and NFL and NHL teams in Buffalo.

Practical Road Trip Info

Budget a full day for Presque Isle alone if beaches or biking are the goal; add a second day for downtown, the Maritime Museum and one day trip.

Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day is when the park’s beaches are open for swimming, unless otherwise posted, and lake-effect snow is heavy in Erie County: the National Weather Service Cleveland office reported that most of the county averaged 140 to 160 inches in the winter of 2024–25.

Presque Isle is free to enter and has no day-use fee, though the park gates and the Tom Ridge Environmental Center run on their own posted hours.

Beach closures and advisories are posted on signs at the park entrance, according to VisitErie. We were unable to confirm which beach parking lots fill first on holiday weekends.

The Local Debate

17

Family-Friendly

▣

Presque Isle beaches

Eight numbered swimming beaches to pick from, from the sheltered shallow water at Beach 11 to Lake Erie surf, so a family can choose what suits the day; swimming is prohibited at the five Mill Road beaches and outside guarded zones.

▣

Waldameer & Water World

A classic amusement park scaled for every age, with a kiddieland section alongside the bigger coasters.

▣

Linesville spillway

Kids get to watch ducks literally walk across a raft of carp fighting over bread — a genuinely funny, free roadside stop on the way to or from Pymatuning.

▣

Flagship Niagara

A real, walkable tall ship kids can board, docked right behind the Erie Maritime Museum.
