What to Know Before You Arrive
Morgantown lies along the Monongahela River near the Pennsylvania border, about 75 miles south of Pittsburgh and 156 miles northeast of Charleston, West Virginia. It is the county seat of Monongalia County, with 30,347 residents as of the 2020 census.
West Virginia University, the state's flagship public research university, enrolled more than 25,000 students and employed more than 1,200 faculty as of 2024. To move students between its campuses, the university relies on the Morgantown Personal Rapid Transit system — a driverless, automated people-mover built by the U.S. Department of Transportation in the 1970s, running since 1975 across 8.65 miles of guideway and five stations. It is described as one of the few automated people mover systems in the United States.
Downtown Morgantown mixes university infrastructure with historic architecture, including the Metropolitan Theatre, which opened in 1924, and the renovated Wharf District, where former warehouse buildings now hold restaurants along the riverfront.
The Road Trip Stop
The Morgantown PRT is the anchor and the most distinctive thing to experience in the city: a driverless transit system running since 1975 across 8.65 miles and five stations, connecting West Virginia University's campuses. According to WVU's PRT site, WVU Morgantown students, faculty and staff ride free with their Mountaineer ID card, and everyone else, including visitors, pays 50 cents* per ride.
Plan the visit
- Check current PRT fares and public access on WVU Transportation's own site before visiting.
- The Wharf District along the Monongahela riverfront holds restaurants inside converted historic warehouses.
- The Metropolitan Theatre, opened in 1924, is a historic downtown venue.
- WVU's campus and downtown Morgantown are connected by the PRT, making the system itself a practical way to move around as well as a sight to see.

*Check before you go. Every lake here links to the official page we checked it against. 1 of these states a price we read off that page on the date we checked. Fees, seasons, water levels, algal advisories and ramp closures change without notice and belong to the agency that runs the water. A blank is something we did not confirm, not something the lake lacks. Never assume a lifeguard. Whether a beach is staffed turns on the season, the day, and which agency runs that particular beach — two beaches on one lake can differ. If that matters to your family, confirm it with the agency before you set out.
