What to Know Before You Arrive

Harpers Ferry is a historic town in Jefferson County, West Virginia, at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, where the borders of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia meet. It had 269 residents in the 2020 census, about 60 miles from Washington, D.C. and roughly 100 miles from Charleston, West Virginia.

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park preserves the historic lower town and significant Civil War-era sites. Much of the town was destroyed during the Civil War, and the National Park Service began rebuilding it starting in the 1950s; today the restored lower town includes period buildings along Shenandoah Street and John Brown's Fort, the engine house where abolitionist John Brown's October 16, 1859, raid on the federal armory concluded. Brown led the raid as an effort to start a slave rebellion; the event is regarded as historically significant to understanding pre-Civil War tensions. Learn more about the raid at the National Park Service's own history page.

The Appalachian Trail passes directly through Harpers Ferry, and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy is headquartered in town; many hikers consider it the trail's psychological midpoint, though the exact geographic midpoint lies farther north in Pennsylvania. Maryland Heights offers elevated views across the town, and Jefferson Rock is the overlook where Thomas Jefferson described the view as “perhaps one of the most stupendous scenes in nature.”

03

The Road Trip Stop

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is the anchor: the restored lower town along Shenandoah Street, including John Brown's Fort, set at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. Current entrance fees are $20* per private vehicle, $15* per motorcycle, or $10* per person on foot or bicycle (age 16+), valid for three consecutive days; those under 16 arriving on foot or bicycle do not need a pass.

Plan the visit

  • Entrance passes are valid for three consecutive days, allowing repeat visits without an additional fee during that window.
  • The Maryland Heights trail offers elevated views across the town and rivers, a more strenuous hike than a lower-town walk.
  • Jefferson Rock is a shorter walk to the overlook Thomas Jefferson himself described in writing.
  • The Appalachian Trail passes directly through town, so a short stretch can be walked without committing to a longer hike.

*Fees subject to change, please check nps.gov for updated information.

*Check before you go. Every lake here links to the official page we checked it against. Each state a price we read off that page on the date we checked. Fees, seasons, water levels, algal advisories and ramp closures change without notice and belong to the agency that runs the water. A blank is something we did not confirm, not something the lake lacks. Never assume a lifeguard. Whether a beach is staffed turns on the season, the day, and which agency runs that particular beach — two beaches on one lake can differ. If that matters to your family, confirm it with the agency before you set out.

Opening hours, tour times, tasting fees and who may come in change without notice and belong to the producer. A blank is something we did not confirm, not something they lack. Each of these says something about children, in their own words above. Where there is no Children line, we did not find a policy — that is not the same as children being welcome, and several tasting rooms are 21 and over.

This is a list of what is near you, not a recommendation of any of it. None of these carry an accreditation we were able to confirm, which is not the same as none being accredited — we check against one register, and plenty of good municipal, state and university places are in no register at all. One entry is marked with an asterisk: we could not confirm part of what is listed, and the note under it says which part. Opening times, prices and seasons change without notice, so check the operator’s own site — every name above links to it.

Practical Road Trip Info

Entrance fees vary by vehicle, motorcycle or foot/bicycle entry and are valid for three consecutive days; check the official site for current rates.

Parking in the historic lower town is extremely limited, according to the park; the park runs a shuttle bus between the visitor center lot (171 Shoreline Drive) and lower town every 10 to 15 minutes, and riding it is included in the entrance fee.

The Maryland Heights trail is more strenuous than a lower-town walk; plan footwear and time accordingly.

Harpers Ferry's small size means dining and lodging options are limited relative to visitor volume, especially during peak Appalachian Trail hiking season.

One public campground within 25 miles of Harpers Ferry, and it takes reservations. Public campgrounds run by federal agencies. State-park and private campgrounds are not included.
