What to Know Before You Arrive
Charleston sits at the confluence of the Elk River and the Kanawha River in central West Virginia, about 90 miles south of Morgantown and roughly 250 miles west of Washington, D.C. It has approximately 46,500 residents, making it the state's capital and largest city.
The West Virginia State Capitol, completed in 1932, was designed by architect Cass Gilbert as a buff-colored Indiana limestone building in the Italian Renaissance style, costing nearly $10 million to build. Its dome rises 292 feet with a 75-foot diameter, topped by a five-foot eagle sculpture, and is the tallest structure in West Virginia. Gilbert later used the chamber of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia, in the Capitol's East Wing, as a model for the courtroom in the U.S. Supreme Court Building.
The Kanawha River defines much of Charleston's landscape, with Kanawha Boulevard running as a riverfront four-lane road offering scenic views, and Haddad Riverfront Park serving as a gathering space for festivals and events along the water. The free West Virginia State Museum sits on the Capitol grounds at 1900 Kanawha Boulevard East, open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with programs built around West Virginia's history as the 35th state. Downtown Charleston holds several commercial buildings between 80 and 115 years old, blending preserved heritage architecture with revitalization efforts underway since the 1980s.

Oddities move, get sold and quietly disappear more than anything else we list, so check anything you are driving a long way for.
