What to Know Before You Arrive
Columbus has been Ohio's capital since 1816 and is now the state's most populous city, the 14th-largest in the country and the second-largest in the Midwest after Chicago. It grew up around government and later around a very large university rather than one dominant industry, which is part of why the skyline feels more spread out than other Rust Belt capitals.
German Village, just south of downtown, was settled in the early-to-mid-1800s by German immigrants who at one point made up as much as a third of the city's population. Restored brick streets and 19th-century houses earned it a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 as the largest privately funded historic district on the entire register.
Ohio State University, founded in 1870, is one of the largest universities in the country by enrollment, with more than 50,000 undergraduates on its central campus. The Short North, the arts district that connects campus to downtown along High Street, grew out of a cluster of galleries in the 1980s and now runs a monthly “Gallery Hop” that fills the sidewalks.
The Road Trip Stop
German Village is the stop that rewards walking rather than driving through. Brick sidewalks and cobblestone streets run past restored 19th-century homes, and the whole 233-acre district is a designated historic district maintained largely through private restoration rather than a single developer's plan. At its center, Schiller Park — named for the German poet Friedrich Schiller — anchors a neighborhood that still hosts its own Oktoberfest.
Budget the time
- An hour or two on foot covers the core streets, longer if you're stopping in shops along the way.
- The Book Loft of German Village is worth building time around on its own — 32 small rooms of books inside a pre-Civil War-era building, easy to lose an hour in.
- Walk it, don't drive it. Street parking is limited and the brick streets are part of the point.
- Time it around Oktoberfest if you can — the neighborhood's German tradition still shows up in an annual festival, though the location has moved around as the area has developed.

Practical Road Trip Info
One full day covers German Village, the Short North and downtown on foot and by short drives between them; add a day if Ohio State's campus or a day trip is part of the plan.
Gallery Hop is listed for the first Saturday of every month, 4–8 pm, so it is not limited to warm months. The German Village Society's Oktoberfest 2026 was a single Saturday evening, September 19, 4–10 pm, for guests 21 and older; check germanvillage.com for the next date.
Home football games change traffic in the Ohio State campus area. Ohio State's Ohio Stadium traffic page says officers begin directing traffic and closing certain roadways hours before kickoff, and it posts inbound and outbound traffic maps; check them before planning a Saturday visit in season.
Both neighborhoods publish their own visiting guidance. The German Village Society's visit page invites visitors to walk the neighborhood's preserved brick sidewalks past restaurants, coffee shops and retail stores. The Short North Alliance describes Gallery Hop as a walkable arts experience and posts a parking map of garages, surface lots and on-street zones.
One public campground within 25 miles of Columbus, and it takes reservations. Public campgrounds run by federal agencies. State-park and private campgrounds are not included.
