What to Know Before You Arrive

Indianapolis sits in the flat till plain of central Indiana, about 98 miles northwest of Cincinnati and 164 miles southeast of Chicago. It was established January 6, 1821, as a planned state capital and platted by Alexander Ralston and Elias Pym Fordham on a one-square-mile grid, with a central traffic circle that gave the city its “Circle City” nickname. Few American state capitals were built this deliberately from a blank map.

That circle is Monument Circle, anchored since 1902 by the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument — part of what is, per the city's own claim, the largest collection of monuments dedicated to veterans and war casualties in the United States outside Washington, D.C. Around it, downtown Indianapolis is unusually compact and walkable for a Midwestern capital: the Canal Walk (redeveloped from the 1830s Indiana Central Canal), White River State Park, and the Mass Ave Cultural Arts District are all within easy reach on foot.

The other Indianapolis is the one on television every May: the Indianapolis Motor Speedway opened in 1909 and has hosted the Indianapolis 500 for more than a century. Wikipedia describes race day itself as “the world's largest single-day sporting event.” The rest of the year the Speedway grounds host road racing, a museum, and a quieter version of the roar that fills the place every Memorial Day weekend.

03

The Road Trip Stop

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the anchor and the reason most people put Indianapolis on a road trip at all. Opened in 1909 on the city's west side, it has hosted the Indianapolis 500 since 1911 and is described by Wikipedia as the site of “the world's largest single-day sporting event.” The museum’s own site lists hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and says it is open 363 days a year, closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Its Winners Gallery shows 17 winning “500” cars on the main level and 12 on the lower level. Track tours require museum admission and can change without notice with weather or track activity, so check the museum’s tour schedule before planning around one.

Budget the time

  • The museum alone is a two-hour visit; a guided track tour or a lap on the bus adds another hour. Race-day tickets for the Indy 500 (Memorial Day weekend) sell out well in advance.
  • Outside race week the Speedway is much quieter — a good time for the museum and grounds without the crowds, though the atmosphere is obviously different.
  • Pair it with downtown. The Speedway is roughly 15–20 minutes from Monument Circle; most visitors do the track in the morning and the Circle/Mass Ave/Newfields loop in the afternoon.
  • May is the month to plan around, whether you want to be there for the race or specifically want to avoid it — hotel rates swing hard either way.

Neighborhoods

Monument Circle / Mile Square
The literal and historic center of the city, laid out in the original 1821 grid. Government buildings, the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, and the densest concentration of downtown restaurants and hotels.

Mass Ave Cultural Arts District
A diagonal street cutting across the grid, lined with galleries, theaters and independent restaurants — Indianapolis's answer to a walkable arts strip.

Fountain Square
Visit Indy, which lists the district as Fountain-Fletcher, puts it about 1 mile south-east of the heart of downtown and says it grew into a commercial district around the turn of the 20th century and was revitalized in the 1990s and 2000s. The tourism board describes vintage and antique shops, restaurants, working artists, live music and performances, and duckpin bowling in the Fountain Square Theatre Building.

Broad Ripple
Visit Indy puts this neighborhood six miles north of the heart of downtown, between the Monon Trail and the northern portion of the Indiana Central Canal, and lists art galleries, sidewalk cafes and restaurants. It says the Monon Trail runs through the heart of Broad Ripple.

Hidden Gems

▣

Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum

The museum’s John H Holliday Family Indianapolis 500 Winners Gallery displays winning cars from the 1911 Marmon Wasp to a 2011 William Rast Dallara, and the museum lists daily hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

▣

Canal Walk

A three-mile stretch of the 1830s Indiana Central Canal, redeveloped into a walking and paddleboat path through downtown — a quieter side of the city most road-trippers miss.

▣

Newfields (Indianapolis Museum of Art)

One campus at 4000 Michigan Road that Newfields lists as the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Lilly House (a National Historic Landmark estate house), The Garden at Newfields (52 acres of horticulture) and The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park, a 100-acre outdoor art and nature park.

▣

Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument

The 1902 monument at the center of Monument Circle, part of the largest collection of war memorials in the country outside Washington, D.C. An observation deck near the top gives a full view down every street of the original grid.

06

The Food Stop

Visit Indiana, the state tourism office, calls the breaded pork tenderloin Indiana’s unofficial sandwich since 1908 and describes it as a piece of pork, pounded and breaded and usually fried. It says the sandwich is on menus at diners, breweries, family restaurants and food trucks across the state.

St. Elmo Steak House says on its own history page that it began in 1902 as a saloon in downtown Indianapolis, that its earliest menu featured shrimp cocktail, and that the shrimp cocktail is still prepared with a fiery, horseradish-laden sauce. Visit Indy describes Mass Ave as a cultural district of art galleries, boutiques, restaurants and bars, walkable from most downtown hotels.

Practical Road Trip Info

Downtown is walkable. Monument Circle, Mass Ave, the Canal Walk and both stadiums are all within a 20-minute walk of each other; a car is really only needed for the Speedway.

Race week changes everything. The week around Memorial Day brings the Indy 500 crowds, higher hotel rates, and a genuinely different city energy — plan around it deliberately either way.

Downtown parking has its own online guide. Visit Indy says downtown has over 73,000 parking spots and points to a Downtown Indy parking guide with a map and filters; it names ParkIndy as the provider of pay boxes and a parking app. Rates and availability vary, so check the guide before arriving.

Give the Speedway its own half-day. It's 15–20 minutes from downtown but deserves unhurried time, especially the museum.

Family-Friendly

▣

Children's Museum of Indianapolis

The museum’s own site calls it “the world's BIGGEST children's museum” and says visitors can touch a dinosaur bone and ride a historic carousel. It is at 3000 North Meridian Street, about 3 miles north of Monument Circle in a straight line.

▣

Indianapolis Zoo

The Indianapolis Zoo gives its address as 1200 W. Washington Street and says it is in White River State Park, less than a mile west of downtown. Its site lists the Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center among its animal exhibits and mentions a Dolphin Presentation among its programs.

▣

Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum

Race cars up close, at a pace kids can actually take in, and a bus tour of the track itself outside race days.

▣

Newfields grounds

The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park, the 100-acre outdoor part of Newfields, is open from dawn to dusk and is free year-round with no tickets needed. The Garden at Newfields is a separate 52-acre area that Newfields’ pricing page groups with the museum galleries under general admission (free for members), so the free part is the park. The park’s Home Again exhibition includes a canary yellow interactive rooftop sculpture that visitors can climb through the windows of; exhibitions change, so check the park page for what is installed.
