Lexington

A city so protective of its horse farms that in 1958 it drew the country's first-ever urban growth boundary, with a line the shopping centers still can't cross.

What to Know Before You Arrive

Frontiersmen camped near a spring here in June 1775 and named the settlement after the Battles of Lexington and Concord, word of which had just reached them. The town was formally chartered on May 6, 1782, and went on to pick up two nicknames that still argue with each other: “Athens of the West,” from an early run of colleges, newspapers and culture on the frontier, and “Horse Capital of the World,” from the thoroughbred farms that now ring the city.

The horse farms are not a marketing line. Lexington passed the country’s first urban growth boundary in 1958 specifically to keep development from swallowing the Bluegrass farmland, and it has held for almost seventy years. Drive fifteen minutes out of downtown on Old Frankfort Pike, a designated National Scenic Byway since 2021, and you’re on a two-mile stretch of road canopied by trees between dry-stacked limestone fences that have stood for two centuries, with a statue of Triple Crown winner Secretariat marking one end.

A creek called Town Branch runs underneath downtown Lexington and gave the city both its industry and, eventually, its name-brand whiskey. Distillers set up along it as early as the 1860s; the James E. Pepper Distillery took over the site in 1879 and by 1901 could store 150,000 barrels of bourbon. It closed in 1962, and in 2008 Town Branch Distillery became the first new distillery built in Lexington in more than a hundred years.

The Road Trip Stop

The Kentucky Horse Park opened in 1978 on 1,224 acres and is the only park in the world built entirely around the relationship between horses and people. It houses the International Museum of the Horse, a Smithsonian affiliate, and the grave of Man o’War, one of the greatest racehorses ever to run, moved here from his original farm when the park was built. In 2010 it hosted the FEI World Equestrian Games, the first time that event was held outside Europe.

Budget the time

  • Give it at least half a day. Between the museum, the barns and the grounds, this is not a drive-through stop.
  • Catch the Equine Showcase at the Breeds Barn, a main-season show at 11:00 a.m. in which costumed riders present horses representing different breeds and tell the stories of their origins; the barn’s second show, the Equine Academy at 2:00 p.m., covers horse training, riding and grooming. In the winter season, which begins November 13, 2026, the park swaps the shows for Stall-Side Chats.
  • Walk to Man o’War’s grave near the entrance before you do anything else; it’s a five-minute stop that explains why this park exists at all.
  • Wear shoes you don’t mind getting dusty. Most of the park is barns, paddocks and gravel walkways, not paved paths.

Neighborhoods

Downtown & the Distillery District
Compact and walkable, with the old James E. Pepper Distillery buildings on Manchester Street converted into bars, restaurants and Town Branch Distillery, the first new distillery built in Lexington in over a century.

Chevy Chase
A 1920s streetcar suburb named for a Maryland golf club its developer, Henry Clay Simpson, belonged to while working in Washington — nothing to do with the Maryland town of the same name. Now a walkable strip of shops and restaurants inside a quiet residential grid.

Ashland Park
Laid out in 1904 by the Olmsted Brothers, the same firm behind Central Park and the U.S. Capitol grounds, on part of Henry Clay’s original 600-acre estate. Stone-and-brick houses from 1905 to 1940 line streets with gas lamps and canopy oaks.

Old Frankfort Pike horse country
Not a neighborhood so much as the view: fifteen minutes from downtown, a scenic byway lined with some of the most photographed thoroughbred farms in the world.

Hidden Gems

▣

Ashland, the Henry Clay Estate

Statesman Henry Clay’s home from 1806 until his death in 1852, rebuilt by his son in the 1850s and open as a museum since 1950. Clay is said to have introduced ginkgo trees to Lexington.

▣

Mary Todd Lincoln House

The 14-room Georgian house where Abraham Lincoln’s future wife grew up, restored in the 1970s as the first historic site in the country dedicated to honoring a First Lady.

▣

Keeneland’s free grounds

Even without a race on the calendar, Keeneland says its grounds are open to the public every day, and a self-guided walking tour that includes the paddock and grandstand is available anytime. Workouts are held on the main track from mid-March to mid-December, and the track’s Morning Works tour offers a trackside view of them. It is a National Historic Landmark and has hosted the Breeders’ Cup in 2015, 2020 and 2022.

▣

Town Branch Distillery

The first distillery built in Lexington in over a hundred years, named for the creek that still runs beneath downtown and once powered the city’s original bourbon industry.

The Food Stop

Beer cheese is Kentucky’s own invention, and it comes from just up the road: the Kentucky Legislature formally declared Clark County, home to Winchester, the birthplace of beer cheese in 2013, tracing it to a restaurant there in the 1940s. Order it anywhere in Lexington — a spicy, beer-spiked cheese spread scooped up with crackers or vegetables — and you’re eating a dish invented about twenty minutes from where you’re sitting.

Bourbon is the other local flavor: Town Branch Distillery, at 401 Cross Street in Lexington, offers tours with tastings for guests 21 and older, and Woodford Reserve’s distillery in nearby Versailles is open for tours and tastings by reservation, with its retail store and bar open without reservations.

11 breweries within 10 miles of Lexington, 3 of them brewpubs with a kitchen.

The Home Teams

Kentucky Wildcats

NCAA · Southeastern Conference
Rupp Arena, Downtown

Eight national championships in men’s basketball, the most recent in 2012, in an arena that opened in 1976 and has seen the Wildcats win better than 89% of their games there. Basketball season, not football, is when this city stops.

Lexington Legends

Atlantic League of Professional Baseball
CommonSpirit Ballpark

Independent-league baseball since 2001; Hall of Famer Roger Clemens pitched a comeback start here in 2006, striking out six batters over three scoreless-adjacent innings.

No NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL or MLS team plays in Lexington. College basketball fills that space completely — Rupp Arena on a game night is as close to big-league energy as the city gets.

Practical Road Trip Info

Budget one full day for the Horse Park and downtown, two if you want Ashland, the Mary Todd Lincoln House and a day trip without rushing.

April and October are when Keeneland runs its spring and fall race meets. The 2026 fall meet runs October 2–24 and the 2027 spring meet runs April 2–23, with no racing on Mondays or Tuesdays.

The Kentucky Horse Park charges general admission, $28* for adults (ages 18 and up) in the main season, March 18 to November 8, 2026, and is closed on Tuesdays during that season. The winter season, which begins November 13, 2026, runs Friday through Sunday only; check the park’s hours page before you drive out.

Winters are milder than they look on a map, averaging in the mid-30s in January, and summers rarely get brutal, averaging around 77°F in July.

The Local Debate

16

Family-Friendly

▣

Kentucky Horse Park

Pony rides, a farm area and twice-daily breed shows make this an easy full day even for kids who don’t care about racing.

▣

Man o’War’s grave

A five-minute stop at the Horse Park entrance with a story simple enough for any age: this was the fastest horse anyone had seen.

▣

Ashland, the Henry Clay Estate

Big lawns to run around on between short, guided rooms inside the house.

▣

A Lexington Legends game

Independent-league baseball, cheap tickets, and a stadium small enough that no seat is a bad one.
