What to Know Before You Arrive
Nashville started as Fort Nashborough in 1779, founded by James Robertson and John Donelson on a bluff above the Cumberland River, and was named for Francis Nash, a Revolutionary War general who never set foot in Tennessee. It picked up two nicknames that still do all the work: Music City, and the “Athens of the South,” a name Nashville took seriously enough to build a full-scale Parthenon.
The Grand Ole Opry started as the “WSM Barn Dance” on November 28, 1925, and got its permanent name two years later when founder George D. Hay followed a classical broadcast by joking that his show was about to play some “grand ole opry” of its own. From 1943 to 1974 it broadcast out of the Ryman Auditorium, a former gospel tabernacle nicknamed the “Mother Church of Country Music,” and when the Opry moved to a new building in the suburbs, workers cut a six-foot circle from the Ryman’s oak stage and inlaid it into the new one so performers would still be standing on the same wood. That circle survived a catastrophic flood in 2010 and is still there today.
For the 1897 Tennessee Centennial Exposition, the city built replica buildings all over what’s now Centennial Park, and the Parthenon was the only one built as an exact, full-scale reproduction rather than a loose homage. It was meant to be temporary; Nashville liked it enough to rebuild it in permanent concrete between 1920 and 1931, and in 1990 sculptor Alan LeQuire finished a 42-foot gilded statue of Athena inside it, the tallest indoor sculpture in the Western world. It functions today as an art museum, which means Nashville’s most photographed building isn’t about music at all.
The Road Trip Stop
The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum is built as one giant piece of visual wordplay: seen from the air, the building forms a bass clef, the rotunda echoes a grain silo or a drum kit, and the tiered roofline traces the history of recorded formats — the 78, the LP, the 45, the CD. Inside are more than 250,000 recordings, 900-plus instruments, and cases of stage costumes, plus Elvis Presley’s gold-trimmed 1960 Cadillac.
Budget the time
- Open daily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission is $31.95* for ages 13 and up, $21.95* for ages 6–12.
- Add RCA Studio B where Elvis, Dolly Parton and the Everly Brothers all recorded, a short shuttle ride away, for an add-on of about $23*.
- Give it two to three hours for the museum alone; the building is dense enough that most people underestimate it.
- Walk it to the Ryman. It's about four blocks, so pairing the museum with a Ryman tour makes one downtown afternoon instead of two separate drives.

Neighborhoods
Broadway (Lower Broad)
Wall-to-wall honky-tonks with live bands on every floor, most nights of the week, radiating out from a strip that used to be Nashville’s skid row.
The Gulch
A former rail yard turned walkable district of hotels, rooftop bars and the giant winged mural everyone photographs in front of.
East Nashville
Bungalow neighborhoods across the river that rebuilt themselves after a 1998 tornado into the city’s independent food-and-music scene.
Music Row
A stretch of converted houses near Vanderbilt where most major-label country recording still happens, low-key and easy to miss if you don’t know to look.
The Food Stop
Nashville hot chicken supposedly started as revenge: as the story goes, Thornton Prince’s girlfriend loaded his fried chicken with extra pepper after one too many late nights out, and he liked it so much he opened a restaurant around it by the mid-1930s. The paste is traditionally just lard and cayenne, served on white bread with pickle chips, and the heat levels run from mild to genuinely dangerous.
Look for a “meat and three” for the other Southern staple on Nashville menus: Visit Music City describes it as a main dish, such as fried chicken or catfish, plus three sides.

*Check before you go. Every lake here links to the official page we checked it against. Each states a price we read off that page on the date we checked. Fees, seasons, water levels, algal advisories and ramp closures change without notice and belong to the agency that runs the water. A blank is something we did not confirm, not something the lake lacks. Never assume a lifeguard. Whether a beach is staffed turns on the season, the day, and which agency runs that particular beach — two beaches on one lake can differ. If that matters to your family, confirm it with the agency before you set out.

Practical Road Trip Info
Budget two full days for downtown Nashville — one for the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Ryman and Broadway, one for the Parthenon, a day trip, and dinner somewhere off the main strip.
Summer runs hot. National Weather Service normals for Nashville put the average afternoon high near 73°F in April and October and near 91°F in July, and July averages 17 days with a high of 90°F or more.
Broadway is often less crowded in the daytime. Visit Music City says live music starts during the day and often runs until 3 a.m., that Lower Broadway is liveliest at night, and that many honky-tonks have several floors, so another level can be quieter when one area feels packed.
Guided tours are ticketed ahead. The Country Music Hall of Fame says its guided museum tour requires advance purchase and lists 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. as its peak hours, and the Ryman says limited tickets are available for its guided backstage tour.
14 public campgrounds within 25 miles of Nashville, all bookable ahead. Public campgrounds run by federal agencies. State-park and private campgrounds are not included.
The Local Debate
Family-Friendly
The Parthenon
A genuinely enormous statue and a story simple enough for any age: Nashville liked its fake Greek temple so much it built a permanent one.
Country Music Hall of Fame
Interactive listening stations and Elvis's actual Cadillac make it more hands-on than most music museums.
A Sounds game
Minor-league baseball at First Horizon Park, home of the Nashville Sounds, with a giant guitar-shaped scoreboard suspended above right-center field.
Adventure Science Center
A science museum with more than 175 hands-on exhibits and the Sudekum Planetarium, at 800 Fort Negley Blvd.
