What to Know Before You Arrive

Huntsville was founded in 1805 and briefly served as Alabama's first state capital in 1819-1820. Its population reached 233,627 by a 2025 estimate, making it Alabama's most populous city and among the top 20 fastest-growing cities in the country. The city's modern growth followed World War II, when the U.S. Army established Redstone Arsenal nearby; postwar rocket research there led to NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center being sited on the arsenal's grounds.

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center, a Smithsonian Affiliate and the official visitor center for Marshall Space Flight Center, opened in 1970 shortly after the Apollo 12 Moon landing. It displays more than 1,500 rocketry and space artifacts, including an Apollo 16 capsule and the Saturn V Dynamic Test Vehicle, housed in the Davidson Center for Space Exploration; the Space Shuttle Pathfinder mockup was rededicated on its display stand in October 2024 after a refurbishment. The center also runs Space Camp and Aviation Challenge residential programs.

Huntsville's original 1805 townsite is preserved in the Twickenham Historic District, the city's first designated historic district and home to the densest concentration of antebellum homes in Alabama, including the 1819 Weeden House Museum. The Huntsville Botanical Garden, a 118-acre garden that opened in 1988 near the Space & Rocket Center, ranked third among Alabama's paid tourist attractions with 353,841 visitors in 2018.

The Road Trip Stop

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is billed as one of the world's largest space museums, occupying land carved from Redstone Arsenal alongside I-565. General admission includes the Saturn V Hall, Rocket Park, Shuttle Park and other permanent exhibit areas, according to the center's own site.

Budget the time

  • Museum hours run 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from March through October, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from November through February, according to the center's own site.
  • General admission is $30* for adults (13 and up), with reduced pricing for seniors, military and younger visitors.
  • We were unable to confirm how long a full visit covering the Saturn V Hall, Rocket Park and Shuttle Park takes.
  • Space Camp and Aviation Challenge are separate, multi-day residential programs booked apart from general admission.

*Check before you go. Every lake here links to the official page we checked it against. Fees, seasons, water levels, algal advisories and ramp closures change without notice and belong to the agency that runs the water. A blank is something we did not confirm, not something the lake lacks. Never assume a lifeguard. Whether a beach is staffed turns on the season, the day, and which agency runs that particular beach — two beaches on one lake can differ. If that matters to your family, confirm it with the agency before you set out.
