Great Smoky Mountains

A park where the tallest peak just got its Cherokee name back, the fireflies count off in unison, and the ridgelines really do smoke.

What to Know Before You Arrive

Great Smoky Mountains National Park was established June 15, 1934, and covers 522,419 acres straddling Tennessee and North Carolina — big enough that no single day trip covers it. President Franklin Roosevelt formally dedicated it on September 2, 1940, at Newfound Gap, the pass where the state line crosses the main road through the park. There's no entrance fee, but every vehicle parked more than 15 minutes needs a paid parking tag, which is how the park funds its trail crews without charging at a gate.

The biodiversity here is almost absurd for a park this size: researchers have documented roughly 19,000 species so far, and estimate 80,000 to 100,000 more remain uncounted. It's nicknamed the “Salamander Capital of the World,” with as many as 31 salamander species alone, more than anywhere else on Earth of comparable size. The park protects one of the largest surviving blocks of old-growth forest in the East, which is part of why so much is still being discovered in it.

In September 2024, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names restored the mountain's Cherokee name, Kuwohi, meaning “mulberry place,” replacing a 1859 name given for a Confederate general who had no connection to the land. The request came from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, whose ancestors held the summit as sacred ground and, for some, as a refuge from forced removal on the Trail of Tears. At 6,643 feet it's Tennessee's highest point and the third-highest summit east of the Mississippi.

03

The Road Trip Stop

Newfound Gap Road (US-441) is the only paved route straight through the park, climbing 31 miles from Gatlinburg, Tennessee to Cherokee, North Carolina and crossing the state line at 5,048 feet. The Rockefeller Memorial at the gap marks where FDR dedicated the park in 1940, and the Appalachian Trail crosses the road at the same spot — you can walk a stretch of the AT in street shoes without any real hike. A signed spur road near the gap climbs to the Kuwohi parking area, where a half-mile paved (but steep) trail reaches the observation tower at the top of Tennessee.

Budget the time

  • Ninety minutes covers the through-drive without stops; budget a half day if you're stopping at overlooks and walking any part of the Kuwohi trail.
  • No entrance fee, but you need a parking tag for any stop longer than 15 minutes — buy it online or at a visitor center before you go.
  • The road stays open year-round except during and right after winter storms, and the Tennessee side gets hit harder by snow than the Carolina side.
  • Go early or at sunset. Midday summer traffic backs up at Newfound Gap's small parking area, and wildlife is far more active at the edges of the day.
04

Neighborhoods

Gatlinburg, TN
The northern gateway, a dense strip of pancake houses, ski-lift rides and an aerial tramway, sitting right against the park boundary. Rebuilt more than once after fires, most recently in 2016.

Pigeon Forge, TN
A few miles north of Gatlinburg and built almost entirely around Dollywood, dinner-theater shows and outlet malls — more family resort strip than mountain town.

Cherokee, NC & the Qualla Boundary
The southern gateway and capital of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, with a living-history village, a tribal museum, and the southern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Townsend & Cades Cove
The quiet entrance on the Tennessee side, with far less traffic than Gatlinburg and the fastest access to Cades Cove's historic loop.

Hidden Gems

▣

Cataloochee Valley

A remote valley reintroduced with elk in 2001; about 200 now roam the park, and Cataloochee is still where you're most likely to see a herd grazing at dusk.

▣

Ole Smoky Distillery, Gatlinburg

Tennessee's first legal moonshine operation, opened July 4, 2010 after a change in state law; it went on to become, briefly, the most-visited distillery on Earth.

▣

Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail

A narrow, winding, one-way 5.5-mile loop road that begins just beyond the Rainbow Falls trailhead, reached from Gatlinburg on Historic Nature Trail Road, with views of mountain streams and well-preserved log cabins. The park says the road is closed for part of the year and that demand for parking in the area often exceeds capacity.

▣

Mingus Mill, near Cherokee

A historic 1886 gristmill about a half-mile north of the Oconaluftee Visitor Center near Cherokee, North Carolina, still standing at its original site and powered by a water turbine instead of a water wheel. The park lists the mill interior as temporarily closed for preservation and rehabilitation work; visitors can still walk around the outside.

06

The Food Stop

Pancake Pantry in Gatlinburg opened in 1960 as Tennessee's first pancake specialty restaurant. Gatlinburg's visitors bureau says the town is home to many pancake houses, each with its own style of serving up a mountain-high stack.

For something less sweet, Pigeon Forge's tourism department lists several dinner shows that pair a meal with skits, themed competitions and music. We were unable to confirm the reservation rules for the shows, or which mountain lodges serve trout dinners.

One brewpub within 10 miles of Great Smoky Mountains. In a small town that is often the kitchen still serving when everywhere else has stopped.

*Check before you go. This list says what the source records as open and where it is — nothing more. The Home Teams

There's no pro or college team based inside the park or its gateway towns; the nearest are the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, about 45 minutes away. Plan this trip around the mountains, not a game.

Day Trips

DestinationTimeDistanceHow we got it
Cades Cove Loop Road1 hr 15 min30 mirouted
An 11-mile one-way loop past preserved 19th-century homesteads, three historic churches and some of the park's best wildlife viewing; closed to cars on Wednesdays from May through September so cyclists and walkers have it to themselves.
Knoxville, TN1 hr42 mirouted
The nearest real city, with a walkable downtown, the Sunsphere left over from the 1982 World's Fair, and the University of Tennessee campus.
Bryson City, NC1 hr 30 min45 mirouted
A small North Carolina rail town near the park's Deep Creek area, home to the depot of the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, whose Nantahala Gorge excursion rides alongside Fontana Lake and the Nantahala River. The town's tourism authority points to rafting and paddling in the Nantahala Gorge.
Cataloochee Valley2 hr 10 min66 mirouted
The elk-watching valley, reached from I-40 exit 20 by an 11-mile drive on Cove Creek Road. The park describes the entrance road as winding and gravel, with approximately 15 minutes of gravel on that route, and as narrow enough that drivers may have to stop or back up for oncoming cars.

Routed figures are computed over map data at free-flowing speeds, between map points rather than street addresses, so a real drive runs longer.

Practical Road Trip Info

Budget two to three days for the park and gateway towns — one for Newfound Gap Road and Cades Cove, one for Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge's attractions, and a spare half-day for weather or an extra hike.

October is the busiest month of the year in the park, according to the park, which says travel times can be significantly longer and that fall colors typically develop above 4,000 feet from early to mid-October. We were unable to confirm how far ahead lodging needs to be booked for fall color or for the May firefly event.

A parking tag is required for any stop over 15 minutes anywhere in the park — daily, weekly and annual options are sold online and at visitor centers.

Cell service is extremely limited inside the park, according to the park, and help may be hours away; the park says to download a trail map before hiking any trail, and notes that vehicle GPS units can give inaccurate directions in the mountains.

22 public campgrounds within 25 miles of Great Smoky Mountains, all bookable ahead. Public campgrounds run by federal agencies. State-park and private campgrounds are not included.

The Local Debate

18

Family-Friendly

▣

Cades Cove wildlife drive

The part of the park where black bears and deer are most often seen from the car, especially early morning or evening.

▣

Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies

A 340-foot underwater tunnel through a shark tank in downtown Gatlinburg, opened in 2000 — a rainy-day backup that doesn't feel like one.

▣

Ole Smoky's stills

The copper stills and free samples are for adults, but watching moonshine actually get made is a good five minutes for any age.

▣

Dollywood

A theme park built around Dolly Parton's own story, with coasters, live music and a water park next door in summer.
