What to Know Before You Arrive

Fort Wayne sits in Indiana's northeast corner, about 18 miles from the Ohio line and 50 miles south of Michigan, at the meeting point of the St. Joseph, St. Marys and Maumee rivers. Before any of the names on today's map, this confluence was Kekionga, a major settlement of the Miami Nation, and one of the most strategically important trading points in the Old Northwest.

A French trader named Jean Baptiste Bissot set up a post here around 1706, and the location stayed a contested crossroads for the better part of a century. In 1794, following his victory at the Battle of Fallen Timbers, General Anthony Wayne built the fort that gave the city its name. That layered history — Indigenous settlement, French trading post, American fort — is unusually visible for a Midwest city of this size, if you know where to look.

Modern Fort Wayne is Indiana's second-largest city, with a walkable downtown built around the three-river system, a recently revitalized riverfront district called the Landing, and a minor-league ballpark that's become one of the most acclaimed in the country. It sits neatly between Indianapolis and Chicago, making it a natural stop rather than a destination most road-trippers plan around from the start.

03

The Road Trip Stop

Johnny Appleseed Park, on the city's north side along the St. Joseph River, holds the grave marker traditionally linked to John Chapman — the real man behind the Johnny Appleseed legend, who planted nurseries across the Midwest frontier. The festival’s own history page says its board is pretty confident the marker is not the actual burial site, and Wikipedia says the site of his grave is disputed. The grave site sits in a quiet riverside park, and the city holds a festival in his honor each September, celebrating the orchards and folklore he left behind rather than the circumstances of his death.

Budget the time

  • Thirty to forty-five minutes covers the Johnny Appleseed Park grave site and riverside walk at an easy pace.
  • Pair it with downtown and the Landing, about 2 miles south of the park in a straight line, for a half-day combined visit.
  • Catch a TinCaps game at Parkview Field if the schedule allows — the ballpark itself is a genuine downtown attraction, not just a stop for baseball fans.
  • September brings the Johnny Appleseed Festival, a two-day outdoor festival held on the third full weekend of the month in Johnny Appleseed Park and the adjoining Archer Park, where the festival’s history page says vendors are required to dress in 1800 period dress. The festival’s site lists September 18 and 19 for 2027.

Neighborhoods

Downtown / The Landing
The historic commercial core along the rivers, recently revitalized with restaurants, breweries and event space in restored 19th-century warehouse buildings.

West Central
A residential neighborhood directly west of downtown that, according to the West Central Neighborhood Association, developed during the city’s canal era in the 1830s. A portion of it was designated a national and local historic district in the mid-1980s, and the association says its homes represent virtually all the styles that were popular between 1830 and 1950, including early Greek Revival-style homes and a rare Gothic Revival residence.

North Side / Johnny Appleseed Park area
The riverside district north of downtown holding the Appleseed grave site, a golf course, and open parkland along the St. Joseph River.

Electric Works district
The former General Electric campus on the Broadway corridor, just a few blocks from downtown, which Visit Fort Wayne describes today as a collection of offices, restaurants, markets and business innovation centers. The campus includes a market with an East Hall and a West Hall around an arcade of public art, where each hall holds food vendors and local shops.
